The Foreigners and Borders Service (SEF) this week made available the new functionality for online renewal of the residence permit for foreign nationals, third-country nationals, residing in Portugal.

In a simple way, in the "Personal Area" of the SEF Portal, the citizen will now be able to access the "Automatic Renewal" feature of their Residence title.

In this way, the citizen will not even need to go to a service desk, just by confirming the request for renewal on the SEF Portal. Subsequently, the Service will carry out all security consultations to confirm the suitability of the applicant, as well as consultations with the databases necessary to assess the fulfillment, by the applicant, of its tax obligations and before social security. Once the fees have been paid, the citizen will receive the Residence Permit at his address.

About 90,000 foreign citizens are covered by this new functionality, whose residence permit meets the necessary conditions to be renewed digitally.

The SEF thus complies with the provisions of Order No. 5793-A / 2020, whose objective is to mitigate the consequences that resulted from the health emergency situation, adopting exceptional and temporary measures that allow for the recovery of pending issues and an efficiency gain in the document management of foreign citizens, reserved competence of SEF.

It is reiterated that, according to the provisions of Decree-Law no. 22/2020 of 16 May, visas and documents related to the stay of foreign citizens in national territory that expired on February 24 are accepted, in the same terms, until October 30 this year.

Today is World Population Day. In our country, in 2019, there was an increase in the resident foreign population for the fourth year in a row, with an increase of 22,9 % compared to 2018, totalling 590.348 foreign nationals holding a residence permit.

The effects of the favourable economic situation in recent years, in particular employment growth, will have boosted the growth of the foreign population living between 2015 and 2019 (+ 201.617).

The sustained growth of citizens from European Union countries also confirms the particular impact of attractiveness factors, including Portugal's perception as a safe country.

The number of foreign citizens with valid residence permits was again the highest ever in 2019. According to the Aliens and Borders Service, last year 110,048 more permits were registered, bringing the number to 590,348.

The data are part of the Report on Immigration Borders and Asylum (RIFA), released this Tuesday by the Aliens and Borders Service (SEF).
