WILDLIFE PORTUGAL is a portuguese nature tourism and wildlife photography business, operating in Portugal. WILDLIFE PORTUGAL organizes specific programs for the observation and interpretation of nature (birdwatching, for example), hiking, photographic tours and wildlife photography – in particular through photographic hides. In this sense, WILDLIFE PORTUGAL has created and is managing a set of pho
tographic hides for wildlife in the Greater Côa Valley, a rewilding area. WILDLIFE PORTUGAL also has the support and backing of Rewilding Europe, a European foundation whose mission is to promote the creation of more spaces for wildlife and to promote nature tourism in these natural areas. Certificated as a tour-operator by the Portuguese Government with the reference 248/2016, WILDLIFE PORTUGAL is also recognized for nature tourism, as most of its activities take place almost exclusively in the National Network of Protected Areas, particularly in the natural parks of Estrela Mountain, Douro International river, Tejo international river and the Greater Côa Valley rewilding area.

After returning from leading a tour for several days, we had this lovely surprise in our mailbox. The new edition of Rewilding Europe's magazine, Annual Review 2023. It's a high-quality publication with a thorough analysis of the rewilding initiatives in 2023 at European level, with the results of conservation actions, the reintroduction of wild species and their benefits for landscapes, examples of sustainable development based on nature conservation and nature tourism and their benefits for local populations and businesses.
We increasingly believe in this philosophy and way of safeguarding the natural values, with benefits at various levels.
It's a privilege to be part of this network and to work towards the same goals, knowing that our work is valid and contributes to promoting it. Thank you!

Rocky valley of the Ponsul river, at Penha Garcia. Almost 500 million years in the making, this is one of the most important geossites of Naturtejo Geopark, mostly known for the ichnofossils representation. The quartzite rocks are imprinted with the trails left by the trilobites that inhabited a primitive shallow sea.

This week we've been guiding a birdwatching tour in the Center of Portugal, from the Lagoon of Aveiro till the Douro Internacional Natural Park. A press-trip organized by ARPT-Centro de Portugal, for the german magazine Vögel. Despite the five days intensive programe, we've managed to enjoy the good weather and the full Spring colours, tottaling about 110 birds species sighted.
Thank you to Center of Portugal for the invitation and organization, and to professional driving and all the knowledge and support.

The Western Subalpine Warbler (Curruca iberiae) is probably one of the most interesting warblers of the Greater Côa Valley. This small, migratory passerine, can be easily spotted on the open landscape of the region.

Our private guided tours to the Greater Côa Valley rewilding area, allow us a closer contact to nature and the local wildlife, while disturbing as little as possible.
We give preference to and only work with small groups, in order to reduce the impact of our activities and seek to offer more environmentally and socially conscious and sustainable programmes, while also cooperating with different partners in the region.
At Ermo das Águias rewilding area, in the Greater Côa Valley, the small herd of Sorraia horses are doing an important management of the vegetation, grazing freely, and open more clearings and paths through the dense broom cover. From the lower meadows they naturally move to other areas of the reserve, also in altitude.
This natural and sustainable grazing is promoting an increase on biodiversity, with more abundance of flowering plants, insects and birds.
We also see an increase on dung beetles, an insect that helps on the dispersion of plant seeds, and are one of the main preys of Shrikes.

Encounter with the Sorraia horses at Ermo das Águias rewilding area, Pinhel, during the 3rd Rewilding Weekend, organized by Rewilding Portugal.
Recently, we had a very important visitor to our vulture hide. First time ever to be recorded here, the great Golden Eagle came down to the feeding station and scared the griffons away. But this bird is not easily fooled. A slight reflex was enough to make it disappear in a flash.
Faia Brava's wild horses. For several years, the garrano horses have been roaming this private reserve, managing the landscape and contributing as a cheap and efective method of fire prevention, besides its unique role on the ecossistem, as a big grazer. #wildlifeportugal #faiabravareserve #thegreatercoavalley #garrano #horses #naturetourism #natureconservation #rewilding #rewildingtours #wildlifewatching

Sorraia horses at the Greater Côa Valley. This domestic grazer is used in a wild regime, playing its role on the natural landscape management, providing conditions for smaller herbivores populations to grow. This natural grazing increases biodiversity and supports a diversified group of predators, beeing this highly represented by the Iberian Wolf. #wildlifeportugal #wildlifewatching #wildlifetracking #naturetourism #natureinterpretation #rewilding #rewildingportugal #thegreatercoavalley #horses #sorraia #portugal🇵🇹 #grazing

Sorraia horses at Vale Carapito (Vilar Maior). This rare horse breed was released in this area a few months ago, to play their own role on the rewilding process of the Greater Côa Valley. The release and the increasing of herbivores is one of the efforts of @rewilding_portugal, specially on those areas without grazing for a long time.
