WILDLIFE PORTUGAL also has the support and backing of Rewilding Europe, a European foundation whose mission is to promote the creation of more spaces for wildlife and to promote nature tourism in these natural areas. Certificated as a tour-operator by the Portuguese Government with the reference 248/2016, WILDLIFE PORTUGAL is also recognized for nature tourism, as most of its activities take place almost exclusively in the National Network of Protected Areas, particularly in the natural parks of Estrela Mountain, Douro International river, Tejo international river and the Greater Côa Valley rewilding area.

On this day when rewilding is celebrated worldwide, Wildlife Portugal is also celebrating a new stage in its journey to promote tourism in Portugal's natural heritage. We are now a travel agency and will be able to continue promoting nature and landscape interpretation programmes, with special emphasis on rewilding in the Greater Côa Valley, but now with a more complete and comprehensive offer.
We continue to count on valuable partners who have accompanied us in this process, namely and the members of the Wild Côa Network.

For a wilder Portugal!

Today is World Rewilding Day!

We, proudly part of the Wild Côa Network, coordinated by Rewilding Portugal in the Greater Côa Valley, are in favour of wilder and more biodiverse landscapes, in which nature can recover and regenerate itself, bringing benefits to those who live in it, increasing nature tourism, enhancing quality and unique natural and endogenous products and ensuring a better quality of life for us and for generations to come.

Rewilding (renaturalisation) needs support and working together as we do in this network. So that it can gain even greater scale and generate more and more impact. That's why we're counting on each and every one of you.

Support this movement. For a wilder Portugal!

The White Broom (Cytisus multiflorus) is the only broom in Portugal exhibiting white flowers, making it easier to distinguish from the others. It is a common bush cover along the Greater Côa Valley, prefering granite soils. March and April are the best months to enjoy the blooming of this plant. We can easily see how widespread it is in the landscape, a reflection of many years of regular forest and rural fires. In this sense, it is a pioneer plant, protecting the soil and the younger trees - while growing to form a new forest.
But the problem is afterwards. With a grown up forest, also the broom has grown and thicken its density, making it a dangerous situation for the trees when there's another fire, which becomes more destructive, killing the trees and interrupting the ecological succession. This situation would be easier to control if we had more wild grazers on the landscape, like the Iberian Ibex and Red Deer.
In the rewilding areas of the Greater Côa Valley, the wild horses are doing their part, but it is not enough.
By the way, the White Broom is a native plant. In fact, it is an Iberian endemism.
