I was able to snap this photo while visiting many former Jewish quarters in northern villages of Portugal last week. A walk down the streets of the historical center of Trancoso will reveal stone walls festooned with over 150 religious graffiti-like carvings from Jews and those forced to convert to become New Christians.

A few streets worth visiting are Alegria, Cavaleiros and Estrela where you will find Hebrew inscriptions and a cruciform mark with the Hebrew letter from the word “S’hadai”, and a branched cross representing the twelve tribes of Israel.

Have you been to Belmonte already? A fascinating story of jewish traditions kept in secret for almost 500 years!
The town of Belmonte in Cova da Beira commands a broad view of the eastern slopes of the Serra da Estrela mountains and fully justifies its name. Tradition has it that the name Belmonte comes from its location (beautiful hill). Some say, however, that it comes from 'belli monte', the hill of war. A sunny place, with good people, endless vistas and centuries-old history.
