This is one of the trails near the Roman Ruins of #conímbriga, in the outskirts of Coimbra and initiative of the city council of @condeixamunicipio. The Mourish River (Rio dos Mouros) may be completely dry today, and it's not possible to enjoy the beautiful waterfall that can be seen by the brigde shown in the video... still, it's such a charming place to come and completely safe to do on your own!

The typical villages of Portugal have many interesting traditional games, which we at GO! Walks Portugal know quite well since our families are originally from the countryside 🏡
In this one, called "Jogo do prego no cepo", each player has their own nail (or there may only be one nail for everyone). In a soft wood stump, we place a nail measuring between 15 and 20 cm and each player is entitled to one hammer strike per play. The goal is to drive the nail in as quickly as possible with fewer hammer blows. The winner is the person who accomplishes it first, obviously!

If there's a place travelers skip when visiting #coimbra... this is it 😮 can you believe it?! Even locals fail to know the Cistercian Monastery of Celas, founded in 1221 by Dona Sancha!
Located in the city center, just about a 20 minutes walk from the University, you'll enter the neighborhood of Celas where you will first find a Cross and a panel of tiles portraying the construction of this Monument and how life was there.
When you step inside you'll travel back in time, having the chance to visit its very colorful 16th century church, populated by artwork made by famous people such as João de Ruão. The highlight, for me, is definitely the cloister with its peaceful garden and absolutely mind-blowing sculpted columns!
It's free of entrance and the opening hours are from monday to saturday, 3pm to 6pm!

Completely out of the track (I can't even write "tourist track"), it needs some formality in order to enter because the property belongs to GNR (National Guard)... but once there, most likely you'll have the place for yourself!
It's possible to learn about the History of this place, read poetry on walls, walk through the gardens, enjoy the quietness of the river. Totally worth the visit 👌

A few weeks ago the University students of Coimbra celebrated the welcoming parade of the freshmen!
We call it "cortejo da latada" because the elder students tie "latas" (cans) to the feet of the new ones... 🔊 making it a very noisy parade!!!
They walk around town, wearing funny garments in the color of their Faculties and biting turnips that their Academic Godmothers and Godfathers give to them. The freshmen always bring a potty with them, asking passersby to fill it with 1 and 2 cent coins...used, later on, to buy some booze at the local taverns 🍻
The parade ends by the river, where their Godmothers and Godfathers use the potties for a baptism... with the water from Mondego river (of course!).

The synagogue of Tomar is a very rare example of a medieval Jewish temple from the 15th century in Portugal: the only one of its kind to have been fully preserved!
The building's architecture is filled with symbolic details of Eastern influence: an almost square ground plan, groined vaults supported by four columns, capitals decorated with geometric and plant motifs and twelve corbels jutting out from the walls. There are two orifices in each of the upper corners where clay jars can be found, fitted face downwards inside the walls, which were used to enhance the temple acoustics 🔊
In addition to its original function, the Synagogue also served as a school, assembly and court for the Jewish community in Tomar. It was closed in 1496, at the time of the Decree issued by King Manuel I expelling the Jews, after which it was turned into a prison. In the 17th century it was referred to as the Ermida de S. Bartolomeu and in the 19th century it served as a hayloft, granary, warehouse, wine cellars and store. In 1921, following a visit (1920) by members of the Associação de Arqueólogos Portugueses (Association of Portuguese Archeologists) it was classified as a National Monument.
In 1923, Samuel Schwarz, a Jewish mining engineer from Poland who had come to Portugal six years earlier, bought the Synagogue and restored it from the state of neglect into which it had fallen. He donated it to the Portuguese State in 1939 to house the museum we now visit here!
