🇵🇹 Procura um programa de família que seja diferente do habitual? Então nós sugerimos uma visita à olaria do Sr.José Carlos Ramalhão na vila de Brotas (Alentejo). Juntamente com a sua mulher Vera, O mestre oleiro José Ramalhão irá explicar todo o processo, desde a recolha de barro no campo até à decoração das peças. Irá até colocar os seus filhos na roda de oleiro para que eles sintam esta que é uma tradição bem Alentejana!

🇺🇸 Are you into good old traditions? Do you want to go on an interesting family trip in Portugal? Then you should definitely visit the pottery shop of Mr.José Carlos Ramalhão in the village of Brotas, Alentejo. Together with his wife Vera, master potter José Ramalhão will explain the whole process, from collecting clay in the field to decorating the pieces. He will even put your children on the pottery wheel so that they feel what's like!

It was in 2018 that the Rootfarers project started to take shape. At that time, I was basically painting a blank canvas with ideas and exploring the country in search of inspiration, thus slowly forming the Rootfarers concept. It was during one of these field trips that I met Mr.Carvalho for the first time. Little I knew that I would meet him regularly during my countryside tours in the Alentejo region... Every winter morning he would sit in Arraiolos main square, near the town's pillory, to bathe on the warm sunlight. Life is full of great things and the funny thing is that the best things in life are free... Just like the warm sunlight on your face during Winter.

If there's one thing Portugal is famous for, is for its wide array of castles and medieval buildings. These pictures are from the charming village of Sortelha. This village is part of the official "historical villages" itinerary and boasts one of the best-preserved medieval city centers in Europe.⁠ A must-see attraction if you're into medieval history!

This is probably due to the celtic influence in our territory, in particular in the Northern regions where its impact is still felt. Many are the clients that ask us about the history of the Belém tower, perhaps Lisbon most iconic landmark. To tell you the truth, besides a small role as a military/defense point, there really isn't that much to it.. Except of course its architecture, particularly the Manueline architectural elements that abound throughout. The Manueline style is a Portuguese architectural style originating in the early 16th century, it synthesizes aspects of Late Gothic with decorative elements related to the Portuguese age of discoveries. Besides the Belém tower the two other best examples of this style is the Jerónimos Monastery (Lisbon) and the Convent of Christ (Tomar)... Be sure to check them out in your trip to Portugal!

Inês de Castro was a Galician noblewoman best known as the lover and posthumously-recognized wife of King Peter I. Their love story didn´t end well as Inês was not recognized by Peter's father (then king Afonso IV) as legitimate wife to be. This eventually led to her murder by the orders of the king. Years after, after being crowned King, Peter organized the coronation of her exhumed co**se (according to legends). They are both buried in Alcobaça Monastery in fine-looking gothic tombs with intricate sculptor work, as you can see in the picture.

🇵🇹 Foi em Julho que arrancámos em força com 2 passeios fantásticos pelo Douro... Fizemos de tudo: Relaxámos num solar do século XVIII, fomos a banhos no Paiva, visitámos Igrejas Românicas, conhecemos a fundação Eça de Queirós e provámos a melhor gastronomia da região... Um passeio certamente inesquecível!
Para os que ficaram curiosos, fiquem atentos aos próximos tours! Serão anunciados por Facebook e por email!
🇺🇸In July we kicked off our activity with 2 fantastic tours through the lower Douro region... We did everything: We relaxed in an 18th century manor, went for a swim in Paiva river, visited Romanesque churches, met the Eça de Queirós foundation and ate the best cuisine in the region ... Certainly an unforgetable tour!

🇵🇹 Quando visitar o Alentejo, irá certamente ver muitas cadeiras deste género, coloridas, decoradas e de dimensão pequena. Não serão certamente muito ergonómicas, mas ajudam os artesãos locais a trabalhar os seus produtos de forma eficaz. São bastante comuns na rgião de Arraiolos onde são bastante usadas na confecção dos famosos tapetes de Arraiolos!
🇺🇸 When visiting the Alentejo region, you will certainly notice there are many chairs of this kind around, they are colorful, beautifuly decorated and small in size. They certainly aren't very ergonomic, but they help local artisans to work their products effectively. They are quite common particularly in the Arraiolos region where they are widely used in the manufacture of the famous Arraiolos rugs!

🇵🇹 Perto de S.Pedro da Gafanhoeira no concelho de Arraiolos, encontramos um dos poucos pastores ainda activos na região (e em Portugal)! Uma lembrança do passado que prevalece aos dias de hoje e será sempre necessária de uma forma ou de outra.

🇺🇸 Near S.Pedro da Gafanhoeira in the Alentejo region, you can find one of the few active traditional shepherds in Portugal! Something to remind us of the past, but that will still be needed in one way or the other!

Fiquem atentos, juntem-se a nós no futuro e lembrem-se:

1 - Todos os tours são privados (não há convívio com pessoas fora do grupo)
2- Todos os nossos tours têm o tamanho máximo de 6 pessoas por carrinha
3 - As nossas carrinhas são desinfectadas e limpas após cada tour, de acordo com recomendações da DGS
4 - Temos máscaras, luvas e desinfectante disponíveis para os nossos clientes.

🇺🇸 At Rootfarers we always try to surprise our customers with unusual tours. Be it our pre-made tours (check our website) or the tours advertised in social media, our aim is just one: to surprise our customers with authentic visits through the unknown side of Portugal! 1 - All tours are private (there is no contact with people outside the reserved group)
2- All of our tours have a maximum capacity of 6 people per van
3 - Our vans are disinfected and cleaned after each tour, according to the Health authority recommendations.
4 - We have masks, gloves and disinfectant available for our customers.
