Palauan Coral Defenders: Crown of Thorns Starfish are presently consuming countless acres of Palau’s otherwise pristine reefs. Their population numbers explode when heavy nutrient loading from human sources enter the ocean ecosystem.

Fortunately, young Palauan conservationists like Calvin Idek Leidich and Kai Yars Kiefer have taken a stance. On August 7th, the experienced free divers removed 117 starfish from Leather Coral Arch and Triton’s Reef. With constant vigilance, these reefs can maintain their high biodiversity and physical beauty.

The 13th Festival of Pacific Arts & Culture 2024 has concluded but the celebration of all the Pacific Islands continues to be in our spirits! Paddling Palau's Boss Lady and Miss Miluu seized the opportunity and were one of the lucky ones to experience the cultural array of the Pacific region.

Return of the Sea Birds: Once upon a time, Palau’s skies were covered in swarms of sea birds. The introductions of pigs, dogs, rats, cats, and monkeys have resulted in the collapse of these populations. With a lot of help from Island Conservation, many of our islands have been restored to their predator free status. The Brown Bo***es “Kuel” have been waiting patiently offshore and will soon to returning to their ancient nesting sites.

The Tabecheding River is full of Botanical Treasures to include the Adder’s Tongue Fern, Ophioglossum pendulum. These delicate epiphytes take advantage of the soil & moisture produced by the bird nest fern. West Side is Underrated: Flocks of Noddy terns helped us narrow our search in the vast ocean. After searching for 8hours - we finally found a pod of Bryde’s Whale. We kept our distance and observed them from afar. Then Melon headed whales showed up! What a day! 🐳

Coral Resilience: In 2012 Typhoon Bopha produced 75mph winds with 50 foot waves. Healthy reefs like “Calvin’s Playground” were completely devastated, with as much standing coral as an empty parking lot. In only a decade Palau’s nutrient rich, sunlit waters restored the reef back to its vibrant status. Coral obligate fish followed soon thereafter. Today, the site attracts avid free divers and students, eager to learn more about this fascinating ecological success story.

A Pleasant Surprise: While exploring Risong Bay with interns Carmin Blesam and Kirang Isaac, we were thrilled to encounter this young female Banded Sea Krait “Mengerenger”. This deadly venomous creature has no fear of people and even swam over my hand while composing the photo. Inexplicably, our interns kept their distance from the snake, despite its docile nature. 😊

Ngerasech Island: Surrounded by a sea of mangroves, the uninhabited island of Ngerasech sits as a testament to a bygone era. During the 1920’s & 30’s, the Japanese government built a ceramics factory which produced high quality clay bricks and tile roofs. Today, only a few brave explorers paddle down the Tabecheding River to inspect this natural and historic wonder.

Gathering the Herd: Despite the name Sea Cow, the Dugong is more closely related to elephants than they are to the bovines. In 1984, Biologist Katy Paine discovered that elephants were communicating with one another using exceptionally low frequency sounds (Infrasounds). Recent observations of Palau’s dugong populations suggest that they are utilizing similar means of communication over long distances. Dugongs are known to emit chirps, squeaks, and barks. The infrasounds are capable of traveling long distances and might be utilized in calling friends and relatives for social gatherings. Paddling Palau will be investigating this possibility in the coming months.
