According to myth, one day King Midas of Phrygia found the god Dionysus’ foster father and school master, the satyr Silenus, sleeping in his rose garden and entertained him for ten days with great hospitality. Out of gratitude, Dionysus granted Midas’ wish to turn everything he touched into the gold. But this miraculous gift turned out to be a curse. The fruit, bread he craved turned into gold. The same happened with a glass of water. Tears filled his eyes when his lovely daughter entered the room. Yet as Midas hugged her, she turned into a golden statue. Despairing and fearful he begged Dionysus to take this curse away from him. The god took pity on Midas and told him to wash his hands in the Sart River in western Anatolia (the ancient Patroclus River of Lydia). Midas did so and surprised to see gold flowing from his hands.
