Transylvania - “The land beyond the forest”

In 1995 I left behind my home in Transylvania and emigrated in Canada looking for better opportunities and a place where my skills and knowledge connected with better opportunities would give me and my family a chance to grow and succeed. I called Vancouver home for the last 25 years and it’s been an interesting journey. I had the chance to live in a country at it’s best in her entire history, my child was born here, got a good education and a positive upbringing. I had personally developed in many areas, knowledge, skills and business expertise are part of my current portfolio, I had the chance to ride the wave of business prosperity, and mature as a person in a favourable environment. In the main time, I kept close to my roots, took my business ventures between Canada and Romania, witnessed how my home country has developed rapidly, now being part of the European Union that created huge opportunities for development. I have interacted with people from all over the world in many places I have travelled for business or pleasure, exchanging ideas and opportunities.

What had struck me later when I have travelled back home was the increasing number of foreign nationals making Romania a place for extended visits or even for calling their new home. In my home town Sibiu, a city in Transilvania, which was the European Capital of Culture in 2007, my good friend and business partner Norman from the UK moved here and developed a branch of his UK prospering business Mi- Pay Ltd. He then started an Expats Group for ex-pats living in Sibiu, a group that now has more than 1200 members and while initially there were more members from the European countries, in the last three years there is an increasing number of people from Canada and US. I then found out that Prince Charles of Wales bought a property in the surrounding areas and is a great ambassador of the Transilvania Culture and Heritage. All these made me think why Sibiu a city in the Southern part of Transilvania (the land beyond the forest) became so attractive for businesses and foreign people, and I started doing a bit of research and I found out the following. While in most western countries the economic prosperity had its benefits like higher incomes and better living conditions, the less beneficial part was a huge increase in the real estate market and the cost of living has increased as well. The effects of these new conditions are becoming uncomfortable to severe for the seniors which now feel their income and savings are shrinking due to higher expenses. These new economic realities cumulated with the need for specialized medical care like dental which is not covered under the medical insurance in many western countries made the cost-prohibitive for a segment of the senior population on the lower-income bracket and made them look for solutions.

Meanwhile, in Romania and particularly in Sibiu my home town, a city with highly educated people you can find a place where living costs are still very affordable, where you can have services at a decent cost and where you can find friendly and hospitable people speaking multiple languages, English, French, German, Italian, Spanish just to name a few.

So here I am looking around for retired people in Vancouver that hardly get by with their income, living in a beautiful but very expensive city with a proposition to try a different experience and for 6 months to discover a different part of the world where their buck can go a long way.
