We've never been fans of dry, advertising copy that lists a series of benefits and elements of a beautiful rural location in the hopes of attracting visitors.
You can probably see this in the stories we share with you, our followers.
The reason is that we believe that every place bears the personal imprint of those who bring it to life. And often, the back story fascinates us more even if the location is charming.
And on Localm you'll find first and foremost, hosting as it should be, you'll find soul-building hosts, homes, friendships, wonderful experiences. Hosts who refurbish old houses, brighten up places or even save a forest from being destroyed by people's enthusiasm and appetite for fun, sometimes invasive to the nature that welcomes them and delights them with its landscapes.
Ina and Cristian, after 14 years, have managed to take a piece of their forest off the beaten track. Today, there, among the trees, is the somewhat mysterious but warm and welcoming Luxury Lake House, a building as discreetly insinuated in the middle of the forest as it is welcoming and comfortable.
And while we said we often prefer the back story to the string of features of an accommodation, Luxury Lake House is an absolutely delightful location that takes you back to a landscape in a movie and is worth describing even though words might be poor.
Set extremely discreetly in the forest on the shores of Lake Paltinu, in the village of Teșila - Doftana Valley, it offers guests exceptional accommodation. A wooden bridge with warmly lit lamps, followed by a cobbled alleyway, also lit, leads to the lake house.
The house is decorated with unique design elements, and the fully glazed surfaces create an indoor-outdoor feeling of perfect communication between guests and nature. The furniture pieces are extremely comfortable, refined and avant-garde. In the bedroom, the warm, brown colours, the candlesticks and the velvety ottoman at the end of the bed plus the heavy, opaque curtains give the room a perfect elegance, where you feel you can rest properly in comfort and peace.
In the mornings, a lady comes in with breakfast ready to spoil the villa's guests. She also serves lunch and dinner, which can be ordered to be served at any desired time.
The decorations are Ina's ideas that have come to life here in the lakeside house and that today delight guests.
How much does it delight them? The fact that the hosts have to book their own holiday home so they can come here from time to time might say enough.
The house has two generous stepped Scandinavian-style terraces (no railings), with outdoor furniture and fireplace, for cool but cozy days here at Luxury Lake House. Also on the terrace is a hot tub with a spa tub, candles and aromatic oils prepared to make the tourist feel like they're at a unique spa, worthy of Bali or some other exotic location.
A very appealing detail is the seemingly boundless infinity pool, which can be found open until late autumn when the weather permits.
I wouldn't say it's the centrepiece for a very simple reason...there's also the whirlpool bath, where you can relax in the forest's rustle and then, the secret garden, built by the hosts, but with the appearance of an old, deserted garden, where you can relax with a coffee in the quiet of the forest among flowers and ruins that give the place a special charm.
For walks on the lake, the hosts provide a kayak and for winter there's sledging if you're lucky with snow. The nearby hillside can be transformed into a great water slide.
There are so many details within the woodland setting - hidden gazebos with benches and fire pits or fireplaces, fire fountains and flowers that you can hardly decide whether or not you should leave the property to explore or just stay here.
The forest is pristine and can change its carpet unhindered now to that of autumn's silvery leaves.

They make a mean goulash, and that's what we and the thousands of guests who've crossed their threshold say.
Served in a cast-iron pot, hung over a flame to keep it warm, this dish really makes you lick your fingers. On top of that, they can serve you many other goodies, all cooked from ingredients chosen from small local producers.

The famous Torockoi cheese factory, the 'full milk cellar' as it says on its white facade, also belongs to the hosts of the Manor House. With the taste of childhood in mind, that of freshly milked milk, or cream or fresh cheese with sour cream, the dairy is made at Torockoi with respect for nature and love.

If the traveller needs a rest, it's a good thing you can find it at the Szekler Manor. They have 23 rooms for rest, by choice. Just let them know in advance. They are so welcoming, the food is so good and the air so clean, they always have guests.

They're ready to welcome from small to large, grown-ups and toddlers. The latter can have fun in the playground right in the courtyard of the manor, while the grown-ups can relax on the terrace in the fresh mountain air with the scent of hay and wild flowers.
Everything here has a different pace, soft and settled, giving you peace and time for reflection.
And the people are so hospitable and attentive to each individual guest!

Very rarely do I find it difficult to write about any location in Romania's country side.

That's because I'm helped by the beauty that each of the hosts puts as they do best in the homesteads they lovingly offer to eager village holiday guests. But the most important thing is the surrounding nature, which is always the same and yet different in every place.

This time, I seem to be at a loss for words. Lazy Cottage is a dream of a village holiday that you can experience for yourself from the moment you set foot on its doorstep.

This friendly cottage has nature's delightful ally on the journey to peace of mind and soul for anyone who decides to inhabit it for a few days. It has the great meadow, it has the freshness of the air given by the forests that cover the surrounding submontane hills, it has the soft music of the Sebeș river flowing nearby and most importantly it has an atmosphere of home.

The cosy, intimate rooms, the wood-burning stove in the living room, all the details somehow brought together in a wonderful blend of tranquillity, joy and intimacy, make you wish you had one just like it and reluctantly close the door when your holiday is over and you leave.

Joana and Alvin retired to the village some time ago and bought the cottage, delighted by its beauty and the surrounding landscape. It was lovingly built by its previous owners and although it's not very big, it has just the right things to make you feel at home, plus the warmth with which the hosts greet their guests.

You can homestead here without any problems and guests even find vegetables or other ingredients for food. You can roast marshmallows or sip mulled wine either in the special place outside in the courtyard or in the house by the fireplace.

Charmed by the cottage, I forgot to tell you where to find it. It's in the village of Laz, Alba county, easy to get here from the Transalpina. A curtain of bushy walnut trees gives it even more privacy, and the brook that rises in the Sebeș river downstream, perfectly matches the atmosphere of peace and comfort here.

At Lazy Cottage it's holiday time and lazy time. In this relaxed atmosphere here, you wouldn't want to be anything but lazy. And that's absolutely fine. Allow yourself to enjoy the beauty around you and the warmth of this home that welcomes you as if it were your own. The hosts always take care of that.

I know we've got you somehow used to mostly presenting you traditional houses that are waiting for their guests, to introduce them to the beautiful world of the Romanian villages.

But today's house is an experience about how to live minimalistic and yet in full comfort, with ultra-modern means, but at the same time little to no invasion of the environment.

Beechtree is built by a Dutch family who fell in love with the beautiful nature of Romania, more precisely, the commune of Izvoare, Harghita county.
The Izvoare commune is a truly idyllic place, with oak forests, rushing streams with clean mountain water and a park where you can see local wildlife.

The hosts came, loved the area and bought a piece of land on which they then built a great Scandinavian-style house, where when you walk in, you are introduced to the concept of 'hygge' on the doorstep. To Scandinavians, hygge means good living or where the soul feels at home.

The rooms are extremely simple but equally comfortable. The large, divan-like beds have thick, comfortable mattresses set directly on a wooden base, and seem to beckon you to rest.

The equally simple bathrooms have very spacious shower cubicles, and the whole layout is also in the same soothing minimalist style.

You have windows as big as the walls at Beechtree House, through which nature enters your home. And you can watch it manifest itself from a comfy armchair next to a modern fireplace set in the middle of the relaxing area.

But one absolutely great thing I find is that when you turn on the tap, whether in the kitchen or the bathroom, you enjoy fresh, clean spring water.

Beechtree House is a green house. The hosts have built a well that captures spring water which is then distributed to the facilities that help power the house and the electricity is provided exclusively by solar panels.

You can also enjoy a nearly 4 acres garden with meadow and woodland, and a grill in the specially designed pavilion next to the house. There's also a traditional wood-fired oven where you can bake treats and pizza and a fully equipped kitchen with everything you need to prepare meals.

The nearest town is Odorheiul Secuiesc, about a 20-minute drive away. But if you want to stay away from the city, the beautiful surroundings at the foot of the Harghita-Mádăraș mountains will relax and refresh you.

The hosts have refurbished the charming 100-year-old old house with its shingle roof and built a new one next door, both ready for guests.
The people here are homely and the traditions are well preserved today. At the guesthouse you can experience the peaceful life, with its old and settled air and quiet, from the wooden beehive of the old house, or from the balcony of the new house. In both houses you can sleep comfortably, and although we're talking about centuries-old traditions, the houses are equipped with 21st century comforts, plus other relaxing facilities.
The village itself is a story, well worth taking in. That's why, many who came here as guests started then their lives as villagers, and if you add to that the food here, clean and tasty, and taste the “horinca” an old traditional home made spirit, you’re then ready for the holiday.

Măgrin is another, nicer, native name for acacia. And in Sat Bătrân, in Caraș Severin, near the Țarcului Mountains, a house literally sat under the roots of the mahogany.

Looking up from the road, it seems that the megaliths rose up to the clouds in a rustle of leaves, helped by a little house. As you get closer you actually see a grassy shade underneath which you can hear the peace.

This household awaits you frozen in time, in a sense of immortality. It has long stood there indifferent to the passage of time, and it looks as if it will still be there in two hundred years' time. The surrounding houses have picked up trends (which have also disappeared), it has remained the same.

And in the old stone shed that runs along one side of the courtyard, there are a few old objects set up in a small museum that show you how simple life used to be here. The stoves in the house probably burn from time to time the cheeky or downy branches of the donkeys looking down from above and everything is old and tidy. Maybe only the bath and the hot water come from our century, otherwise all around you have only nature and wood and stone, in the cellar meat is still smoked, if you get a headache from too much air you drink brandy and sit and feel the peace and quiet come over you.

And when you've calmed down, you can follow in the footsteps of the WWF-acclimatised zygons (volunteers here have also been involved in developing sustainable tourism and communities in the area), or you can walk the high hills around.

If you go to Țara Făgărașului in Romania, you can sleep in an expensive hotel with soft, thick mattresses and possibly a swimming pool. But what will you find if you also try the Transylvanian Traditional House? First of all, a house that is more than a hundred years old, where everything smells old, but is comfortable old and gives you a feeling of well-being, just like your grandparents.

You sleep in a room with beautiful old museum objects, in a refurbished bed, and in a silence where you forget yourself.
Instead of the pool you can take a walk in the surrounding hills (you have a stunning view) or visit the Saxon villages that are a stone's throw away, whichever way you throw the stick.

In the evening you sit with Silviu (the owner of this marvel) for a story in the courtyard of the house (you know, that Transylvanian courtyard that completely isolates you from the street, from the neighbours, as if from the world around you), you learn the stories of the place and the places you'd like to see around and you talk as you would with an old friend, about life, about plans, about family, about everything. Eventually you also have a glass of cherry or wine.

In the morning you won't have for breakfast salmon fished thousands of miles away or oranges picked in South Africa. But you will have juice made from apples and grapes from the host's orchard and produce from the people in the village.

But more than this fabulous breakfast you'll be left with the feeling you get when you walk into a kitchen where the hostess has built a fire in the stove for you, made coffee and hot milk for the children.

Legends seem to come alive sometimes.

You go to a place like this where, either because the people still live traditionally and have respected their customs for generations, or perhaps because of the clean and respectful way they prepare their food, there's something that makes you want to stop and put aside any thoughts of days measured by the clock. You're carried somehow back to a time that's old, but still alive.

Vadul Lupilor is a place that stirs the longing for legends, for meat roasted over a fire or for liqueurs tasting of fresh plums or cranberries, which brighten the spirit and let the mouth water, for open wood fires and stories. A place where thick spruce beams laid and beautifully joined together in a welcoming cottage also tell a centuries-old story.

Legend has it that the free Dacians were brothers with the wolves. In ancient times, in the land of Dacia, there lived a priest with snow-white hair and beard who preached good. His faith and courage were known not only to men but also to animals. Zamolxe, the god of the Dacians, loved him and called him to him in the mountains to serve him. Away from humans but close to animals, the priest learned the language of the mountain beasts, and most of all the wolves loved him. Zamolxe, seeing this, and wanting to have reliable help in the land he protected, turned him into a white wolf, as big as a bear, the most feared and respected in all Dacia. And he commanded him to lead the wolf packs into battle with the Dacians to defend the land from those who wanted its beauty and wealth. Hundreds of years later, the little dog Molda who accompanied the Dragon of the Descent into Moldavia was half wolf, descended from the old legendary wolves.

At the foot of Pietros, in the heart of historic Maramures, in the commune of Moisei, a former estate of Dragoș, Vadul Lupilor is the place to let the stories come to life. A hut ready to welcome hikers from all over and to man them with traditional food, peace and rest. There is room for 12 adults and 8 children in the 6 rooms.

The hosts are very welcoming and eager to provide everything the guests need to feel comfortable. Guests can prepare their meals in the fully equipped kitchen or ask the hosts to provide breakfast and dinner. They are sure to enjoy traditional Maramureș food.

The cottage has a large courtyard, three gazebos, and an orchard where you can relax and breathe in the fresh mountain air.
The barbecue and the place for the kettle are almost self-evident, as in any solid village household.

10 km away is the beautiful Izei Valley with its Blue Spring, and a little further on, at Borșa, the Cailor Waterfall. The Mocănița, the forest steam train, with covered and uncovered passenger carriages, is also 10 km from the cottage, in the picturesque Vaser Valley in Vișeu de Sus, so there's no time for boredom.

And if you're still feeling fit, somewhere in a hamlet about 12km from Vadul Lupilor, in Săcel, a potter's workshop is set up, making pots from unglazed red pottery. His pots are made according to techniques from the time of the Dacians, with aesthetic elements also from that time and fired in a Roman kiln hundreds of years old, the last of its kind in historic Maramures.

There is also a natural "washing machine" made of wood and using spring water, where waxes, blankets, and carpets are washed using ancient methods.

A sort of "cherry on the cake" at Vadul Lupilor, there are two little tree houses. You can let your inner child run wild here and climb into one with the whole family. Each cottage can accommodate a family of four, two adults and two children.

In the evening you sit with Silviu (the owner of this marvel) for a story in the courtyard of the house (you know, that Transylvanian courtyard that completely isolates you from the street, from the neighbours, as if from the world around you), you learn the stories of the place and the places you'd like to see around and you talk as you would with an old friend, about life, about plans, about family, about everything. Eventually you also have a glass of cherry or wine. In the morning you won't have for breakfast salmon fished thousands of miles away or oranges picked in South Africa. But you will have juice made from apples and grapes from the host's orchard and produce from the people in the village.
