Since we mentioned a few weeks ago that plums can be now found all over the Romanian markets, these are especially easy to find in the countryside, where people make a traditional Romanian drink out of them: the țuică!

Sometimes known as ‘white lightning’ or ‘white whiskey’, this traditional Romanian spirit is often referred to as Romanian moonshine due to the well-known practice of making home-batches that can’t legally be sold on supermarket shelves.

This colorless plum-based spirit is technically a Brandy and sits with an ABV of between 45-60%. It’s customary to welcome guests with a shot of țuică, and this potent kick-back is also consumed heartily at festivals, holidays, and sporting events. Tuica is also often served as an aperitif with many traditional Romanian foods.

the most expensive paper in the world is a Romanian one?

The most expensive newspaper in the world was the ‘Auroch and the Eagle’. It was first printed in Iași in the 18th century, and the last issue went to print in 1858. Copies today are so rare, that the last issue sold for over 830,000 Euros in Bucharest in 2006.

The issue was temporarily returned to Romania in 2008 as part of the World Philatelic Exhibition in Romexpo Bucharest. It now resides in Israel.

Let's start the week with positive vibes! How about learning something new about Romania and its wonders?

Enisala Fortress, Yeni-Sale or Heracleea, as it has been called over time, is a special tourist attraction in the center of Dobrogea. The ruins of the medieval Enisala fortress are located on a limestone hill, also called Dealul Gras, which dominates the area of the Razim and Babadag lakes, about 2 km from the town of Enisala. The landscapes that are revealed to us at the foot of the ruins of the fortress are spectacular, so that, from above, we can admire the hills of the Enisala reserve, but also the Razim and Babadag lakes, and at sunset we are offered a fairytale perspective.

Soon, markets all over Romania will be filled with plums, freshly picked from the orchards. While some people will prepare the famous „țuică” (a typical Romanian brandy, made especially in the countryside), others will delight themselves with plum dumplings.

Our grandma Stela always makes these dumplings, with the freshest of plums, with potatoes or semolina, sprinkled with fried rusk and cinnamon! They always remind us of our childhood and bring a huge smile on our faces.

With a satisfied belly and nice memories – this is how we spent this !
