752 years ago, on February 23rd 1271, the name of Brasov was first mentioned in an official document that mentioned the Saxon settlers that arrived in the area in the first half of the XIII Century.

The Saxon name of the city is Kronstadt, meaning City of the Crown, which emphasizes its importance in the region.

Brasov is famous for its architecture, old town hall and for the easternmost Gothic church in Europe - The Black Church.

Between 1950 and 1960, it was renamed as Stalin City, during the hardcore Soviet rule.

33 years ago today, Communist Dictator Nicolae Ceaușescu held his last speech, from the balcony of the Central Committee.

Protests had already started in other cities since the 16th of December, met with brutality by the regime. A crowd of more than 100.000 was gathered by party activitists to listen to the beloved leader.

But just a few minutes into his usual anti-capitalist, hard-core Communist speech, Ceaușescu faced something that he had never seen before: he was being booed. Big time. And the crowd could no longer be contained, they wouldn't stop and let him go on.

A high ranking officer of the Security Services pat him on the shoulder and told him it was time to go. A helicopter was waiting on the roof, but instead of taking him and his wife to a safehouse, it took them to a military compound in Târgoviște, where they were briefly tried and then executed 3 days later, on Christmas Day.

After 45 years of darkness, hunger and fear, Romania was free again.
