The beginning of May in Russia is a period of several holidays and days off. On 1st of May, Russia celebrates the Spring and Labour Day.

In the Soviet past, thousands of Soviet people went out for organized demonstrations and festive processions.

Nowadays, at the beginning of May you can enjoy festively decorated city streets and blossoming gardens and parks. With several days off at once, locals go out of the cities for picnics or for opening their country houses and travel across Russia or abroad.

INTOURIST celebrated its 95th anniversary

On 12 April 2024 we celebrated INTOURIST's 95th anniversary. Today, INTOURIST is the oldest Russian travel company in Russia and the world, providing the entire range of travel services for foreign citizens, outbound and domestic tourism.

Almost until the middle of Perestroika and the collapse of the Soviet Union, INTOURIST had a state monopoly on the admission and service of all foreign citizens arriving in the USSR, regardless of the purpose of their visit (including tourists, merchants or technical specialists).

Today, Intourist is a diversified mass federal tour operator and one of the largest travel companies in Russia. We are proud of our great history and during the anniversary year will be telling you fascinating stories from our vast experience.

By the middle of 2024, we are confidently standing on our feet and expect a partial recovery from the pandemic in the inbound tourism market, strong growth of the domestic tourism segment by at least 30% and a multiple increase in outbound tourism volumes. The tour operator has offices in all major Russian cities. The company is developing its own retail and franchising projects. In 2024, we will continue to work on the technical improvement and technological development of our own booking system in both incoming and outbound tourism to make working with us faster, more convenient and of higher quality.

📄 We have made a recommendation list of gadgets that you can arm yourself with while traveling to maintain comfort and also capture impressive photos and videos during your trip.

1. Power bank

Being in an unfamiliar city with a low battery on your phone is an uncomfortable situation, so carry a portative accumulator. It's best to choose powerful yet lightweight gadgets.

2. Earplugs

You never know what kind of neighbour will be on the plane or in the bus. Buy earplugs with noise reduction, you can choose smart ones. They will allow you sleep well, work or study during your journey.

3. Audio splitter

When you want to watch a movie together with your companion, it’s comfortable to connect your wired earphones through the splitter.

4. We grouped the next three gadgets under one item because they perform the same function.

Selfie stick

You can take selfies in front of landmarks without having to ask strangers for help. The built-in light will save your photoshoot in low light or dark places. If the device has also built-in stabilization — the video quality will be better.

Smartphone tripod

It is a convenient and compact device that allows you to record videos without the shaky camera effect and take panoramic photos without any outside help.

Tripod with flexible legs

It allows you to place your camera or smartphone on any surface. For example, you can attach your camera to a tree branch or a bicycle handlebar — the image will still be smooth.

5. Waterproof phone case

It provides significantly more water resistance than the best smartphones offer on their own. The case also keeps out sand, dust, and dirt, and often provides some drop protection too.

6. External hard drive

If you take a lot of photos and videos while traveling or download movies for the road, a compact gadget for storing large amounts of data will come in handy.

7. Portable speaker

Choose a compact Bluetooth speaker to make a party in nature or listen to the music in the hotel.

8. Travel iron

To avoid worrying about whether the necessary equipment will be provided for you in the hotel, take this gadget with you. It weighs less than a kilo and takes up minimal space thanks to its folding handle.

9. Electric heating for clothing

Cold weather can ruin even the most beautiful places. Modern electric heating for clothing will keep you warm from head to toe. It is powered by a powerful battery that produces heat for up to 15 hours.

🍂 Every autumn, the closing ceremony of the fountains takes place at the Peterhof State Museum-Reserve to mark the end of the fountain season. This year it will be held on September 22 and 23 in the Lower Park on the Grand Cascade.

The main attraction is a large-scale light fountain. Traditionally, a grand show with theatrical performances and fireworks is organized. The theme changes every year. This year, a multimedia show will be presented in honor of the Year of the Teacher and Mentor.

Visitors will see not only exciting 3D projections and pyrotechnic special effects. Especially for the festival, decorations in the form of historical illumination structures from the late 19th and early 20th centuries will be created in front of the grottoes of the Grand Cascade.

☝🏼 Despite the name of the event, the fountains stop working a little later. Usually, this happens after the first frosts. This is great news for visitors who want to come at the end of September.

🚡 The Moscow cable car has become a popular destination for tourists and locals alike. The system was opened in 2018 and offers a unique perspective of the city that cannot be experienced from the ground.

It runs from the Sparrow Hills to the Luzhniki Stadium, covering a distance of 720 meters. The ride takes about 10 minutes, and during this time, passengers can enjoy views of the picturesque embankment of the Moscow River, the territory of the famous sports complex Luzhniki, the skyscrapers of the Moscow City business center, the main building of Moscow State University, and other iconic places in the capital.

The complex meets all safety standards and consists of 33 cabins, each designed for 8 people. All cabins are equipped with air conditioning and heating systems to ensure passengers' comfort during all seasons. There are also media screens, audio guides in different languages, and lighting inside.

The cost of a ride varies on weekdays and weekends. You can pay for a one-way trip or a round-trip at once. A round-trip ticket does not mean you have to immediately board the return trip. This ticket is valid for the whole day, so for example, you can get on at the Luzhniki station, go to the observation deck, take a walk, and then return.

👍🏻 Whether you're looking for a scenic ride or a convenient way to travel between two areas of the city, the Moscow cable car is definitely worth a visit.

➡️ Colonnade of St. Isaac's Cathedral

The most famous viewpoint in the city. Together with 24 angels looking down from the balustrade of the dome, and 12 statues of apostles occupying their posts on the pediments, you can see everything that has made the cultural capital famous from a height of 43 meters. It is also possible to observe the bridges raising. You have to climb 262 steps to get there — 211 steps on a spiral stone staircase to the roof and an additional 51 steps on an iron staircase.

➡️ City Duma Tower

The building is 47.5 meters high, the observation deck is reached by a spiral staircase with 233 steps. You can see the central district and its sights from there. By climbing up, visitors can get acquainted with the exhibitions that are displayed inside the building. They tell the story of how the architectural appearance and purpose of the Duma Tower have changed.

➡️ Bell tower of the Cathedral of the Vladimir Icon of the Mother of God

The platform is located on a high bell tower next to the cathedral, which was attended by the famous Russian writer Dostoevsky. It has two tiers, the lower one is open all year round, and the upper one only when there is no snow. The height is 41 meters, and you need to overcome the 212 steps. The staircase to the upper level is the steepest and most difficult to climb. The bells can be heard on Thursdays and Saturdays at 17:50.

💙 On August 22nd, Russia celebrates the Day of the Russian Flag. This national holiday holds great significance as it commemorates the adoption of the tricolor flag as the official flag of Russia in 1991.

The white-blue-red tricolor was first raised over three centuries ago during the times of Russian emperor Peter the Great. It is associated with heroic milestones in history, centuries-old traditions, values, respect, patriotism, and pride for the great country.

The flag consists of three horizontal stripes — white on the top, blue in the middle, and red on the bottom. Each color carries symbolic meaning, with white representing peace, purity, innocence, and perfection, blue symbolizing faith and loyalty, and red standing for courage and love for the homeland.

The president congratulated all citizens on the holiday, emphasizing that the national flag is a symbol of unity for Russians that will always inspire the people of the country to move forward.

Today, the colors of the tricolor are painted throughout the country from the Far East to the Kaliningrad region and people come together to pay tribute to the Russian flag. It is prominently displayed in public places, government buildings, and private residences.

Festive events and ceremonies take place across the nation, impressive flash mobs, car rallies, unexpected installations are held. The flag is unfurled on mountain tops and main city squares, in courtyards and on highways. Concerts, parades, and fireworks fill the air with joy and merriment.

❤️ Waving proudly in the wind, the Russian flag reminds everyone of the shared heritage and aspirations of the large and multinational country!

🎈 To make a vibrant escape from the bustling city streets is easy in Gorky Park, celebrating its 95th anniversary at the moment. Established in August 1928 on the territory of the First All-Russian Agricultural and Handicraft Exhibition, it immediately became one of the most popular parks in the capital.

The park was named after the famous writer Maxim Gorky in 1932, on the occasion of the 40th anniversary of his public and literary activities. Large mass events and exhibitions began to be held here, as well as sports and leisure activities.

In 1934, English writer Herbert Wells, traveling through the Soviet Union, was so impressed with Gorky Park that he called it the «factory of happy people».

🕑 Today it is an integral part of the city and one of the most beloved recreational and cultural hubs with its own special atmosphere, welcoming millions of visitors each year, and serving as a testament to the city commitment to creating dynamic and inclusive public spaces.

The park continues to grow and develop. Resting lounges, art installations, new dining areas, and new zones created in the spirit of modern design trends have appeared on its territory. It features expansive green spaces, beautifully landscaped gardens, and tranquil lakeside areas.

In addition to its natural beauty, Gorky Park offers a wide range of entertainment options. From playgrounds to open-air cinema screenings, concerts, and various exhibitions, there is never a shortage of things to do.

📩 In his congratulations, the Mayor of Moscow highlighted that in recent years, the park has been equipped with bicycle lanes and provided visitors with free Wi-Fi access. Restored or recreated Soviet sculptures and flower beds have been returned to their place, rental points for equipment, bicycles, and scooters, boat stations, sports grounds, and clubs have been opened.

🎉 Gorky Park is a symbol of joy, leisure, and cultural enrichment, have doubt to include it in your itinerary.

🍦 GUM invites everyone to enjoy the summer vibes: smell the flowers, take memorable photos, taste some watermelon or a portion of the legendary GUM ice cream.

🌹 One of Moscow's oldest department stores on Red Square turns into a real greenhouse in the summer - it hosts the traditional Flower Festival. Skilled gardeners have planted 650,000 plants along the lines and facade, grown in the Moscow region specifically to decorate the GUM building.

☀️ In addition, in August, the Watermelon and Melon Festival started here. In honor of this, a central fountain was filled with five tons of summer fruits. Visitors can not only admire the installation but also buy Astrakhan watermelon or torpedo melon. They are sold whole and sliced in a cup.

👉🏻 The festivals will continue until September 10th, ensuring a delightful rest of summer in the heart of Moscow.

🥟 If you want to step away from modern times and dip into the atmosphere of the last century, go to the cafes keeping the memories not only in their interior but also in the dishes choice.

🚩 Varenichnaya №1 https://goo.gl/maps/FNcnzTkXQFCn8Ms79
It seems like time stopped in the middle of the 1970s here. The interior is in the style of a typical Soviet apartment and many Russians who come here to eat have nostalgia for some things, old books, vinyls, carpets. The speciality is dumplings with different fillings, sweet and sour, meat and vegetable. Many traditional dishes like borsh soup or chicken cutlets. There are many cafes around the city.

🚩 Stolovaya 57 https://goo.gl/maps/NywuANFGxp31DKZu9
This old canteen located in the GUM department store on Red Square has an interior from the 1970s, Soviet posters about food on the walls, nice mouldings and granite pillars. You may find traditional salads such as olivye and herring under a fur coat, pirozhki, Russian typical soups borsh or solyanka. Traditional drinks out of dried berries. The main motto - when done, remove your plate.

🚩 Zhiguli https://goo.gl/maps/eSjm5tt32eBrAyK37
Opened in the 1960s as a bar it was very attractive for people. Now the concept changed, it's a restaurant bar with live music where you may dance too. Mostly Russian cuisine dishes widespread in the Soviet times, try for example mimosa salad with hot-smoked salmon, caviar and tails of crayfish or a Pea soup in a rye tub with smoked foods, bacon, beef, dill. A big variety of grilled positions*.*

🚩 Soviet times https://goo.gl/maps/R9us7CNhU6WjFsJW7
The hall of this cafe is decorated ironically and a bit kitschy, there are portraits of Lenin and Gagarin, soviet famous posters and emblems. This retro atmosphere is felt well together with the melodies from the 1980s and old Soviet tv programs. The speciality is chebureks - deep-fried turnovers stuffed with seasoned mince or finely chopped meat and fried in oil.

🚩 Petrovich https://goo.gl/maps/Fschf9BckJ9K7sAV6
It's a club restaurant with a lot of details from the past, the tableware and everyday objects, many gifts of club members. All this reflect the nostalgic home-like, cosy atmosphere. The food is known by every Russian from his childhood, there are Russian and some Georgian dishes available, for example, kharcho soup or fried suluguni cheese. Entrance in the evening is only for club members.

🚩 Mari Vanna https://goo.gl/maps/hGPS4KgMzpHC9PuL8
The restaurant is stylized like a cosy apartment with many nice details like lace table-napkins and beautiful lampshades. The menu features buckwheat, fried potato with mushrooms, cutlets with mashed potato and pickled cucumbers. All are delicious but rather expensive.
