A powerful spiritual and creative force distinguished the character of Old Believers to help them survive in harsh, adverse conditions, not only preserving their identity but also occupying their fair place in Russian society.
Old Believers were the leading collectors and caretakers of Russian antiquities such as manuscripts, ancient icons, and ancient chants and yet they remained dynamic citizens of their Motherland.
Old Believer character and ways of life shaped famous merchants and millionaires such as Kuznetsov, Morozov, Ryabushinskys, and Soldatenkov.
The Old Believers’ movement was a cultural and spiritual phenomenon that affected the all of Russia and spread to the United States, Canada, Australia and Brazil. However
Moscow has always been its epicenter.
ROGOZHSKY SETTLEMENT is the well-known Old Believer center in Moscow.
Rogozhka is the center of the Old Believers who retained the priesthood. Preobrazhenka is the Old Believers center created by the first Russian Protestants, Old Believers who remain priestless.
We will visit the main Chruch of Old Believers, Pokrovsky Cathedral (Protection of our Mother of God), built by the outstanding Russian architect Kazakov, and will view the rich collection of ancient icons.
