A powerful spiritual and creative force distinguished the character of Old Believers to help them survive in harsh, adverse conditions, not only preserving their identity but also occupying their fair place in Russian society.

Old Believers were the leading collectors and caretakers of Russian antiquities such as manuscripts, ancient icons, and ancient chants and yet they remained dynamic citizens of their Motherland.

Old Believer character and ways of life shaped famous merchants and millionaires such as Kuznetsov, Morozov, Ryabushinskys, and Soldatenkov.

The Old Believers’ movement was a cultural and spiritual phenomenon that affected the all of Russia and spread to the United States, Canada, Australia and Brazil. However
Moscow has always been its epicenter.

ROGOZHSKY SETTLEMENT is the well-known Old Believer center in Moscow.
Rogozhka is the center of the Old Believers who retained the priesthood. Preobrazhenka is the Old Believers center created by the first Russian Protestants, Old Believers who remain priestless.

We will visit the main Chruch of Old Believers, Pokrovsky Cathedral (Protection of our Mother of God), built by the outstanding Russian architect Kazakov, and will view the rich collection of ancient icons.

The buildings of the Moscow Kremlin are recognized as one of the UNESCO World Heritage Sites. As the first national center of Russia the Kremlin has witnessed all of the major events in Russian history.

We will start our tour on Red Square and visit St. Basil's Cathedral, an outstanding example of a renowned Russian style in architecture, which was built by Ivan the Terrible in 1551.

Inside the Kremlin you will visit the main Orthodox churches of Russia: Assumption Cathedral, Archangel's Cathedral (where the Russian tsars and princes are buried), Annunciation Cathedral, and the Church of Deposition of the Robe, where kings prayed. Our tour takes us past the lofty Ivan the Great Bell Tower, the Patriarchs Palace, and the oldest secular building in Moscow, the Granovitaya Palace. TOUR: THE TOWN OF BOROVSK: PAGES OF THE RUSSIAN HISTORY

We will visit one of the oldest towns of Russia, Borovsk. This small town of heroic deeds served as an outpost on the southern borders of Moscow state. It became well known because of the people who visited and lived here, notably the leader of the spiritual movement known as the Old Believers, Priest Habakkuk (Avvakum), and Noblewoman Morozova, the greatest woman in the history of Russia.


We will also visit the Nativity of Our Lady Holy Pafnutiev Monastery, founded in 1444 by one of the most venerated ancient saints, St. Paphnutius. The eminent Russian iconographer, Dionysius, painted here, Napoleon Bonaparte stopped here, and the father of astronautics, Tsiolkovsky, lived and worked in Borovsk.

For centuries Russian people have been coming to churches and monasteries to venerate icons and relics of saints. These icons and relics are revered for their protection of Russia, for their healing properties, and for shelter from misfortune.
During the tour we will visit and become familiar with the history of the churches and the history or phenomenon of discovering the icons.
