PLAGUE FORT
The darkest military fort in the Gulf of Finland near Kronstadt is Fort Emperor Alexander I.
It was built in 1845 to protect the Kronstadt military port.
From 1899 to 1914, the anti-plague laboratory of the Imperial Institute of Experimental Medicine was located on the territory of the fort, where plague microbes and means to combat them were studied. At the fort there were laboratories, operating rooms, stables and rooms for laboratory animals, on which scientists tried the actions of invented medicines. The experiments were conducted on cows, goats, camels, monkeys, rabbits and even reindeer. There were also cremation ovens for recycling waste and corpses, a sterilizer, a laundry, a sauna, a kitchen, an electric station, doctors' rooms, a dining room, a museum, a library and other necessary apartments.
Several doctors died here in experiments with dangerous microbes. Residents of Kronstadt were afraid even of the wind blowing from the side of the fort.
Access to the fort was strictly limited, and communication with the outside world was maintained with the help of a small steamer, which had a funny name "Microbe".
It is difficult to imagine the full importance of the work of all those who worked at the Plague Fort, who gave the opportunity to put a solid barrier to the most terrible epidemics and save millions of human lives.
Today tourists who visit Kronstadt with an excursion come to the fort on a small steamboat to look at the ruins of a mysterious island. In winter, some daredevils get here on foot along the ice of the Gulf of Finland.

Lakhta Center is the largest skyscraper in Europe. Autumn sunset ⛅️
By the beginning of the 20th century, the Russian court consisted of 16,500 persons, of whom 15,000 were members of the Household, or servants. Of the remaining number, nearly 2/3 held honorary positions, for which they received no financial compensation. Only the top five hundred officials, members of the Suite and the Entourage, received salaries. The Ministry of the Imperial Court supervised thousands of officials and members of the House hold. So immense were its functions that the ministry itself required a staff of thirteen hundred, their salaries and ceremonial expenses billed to the Russian government at a rate of 12.7 to 17 million rubles each year. At its head stood the "ministr imperatorskogo dvora", or minister of the imperial court, who controlled the imperial budget, handed out salaries and stipends to grand dukes and servants, issued manifestos in the emperor's name, advised him on matters of protocol, and published the Court Calendar, a list of official engagements undertaken by members of the imperial family. The composition of the Imperial Entourage and Suite reflected the privileged position of Russian aristocrats at the beginning of the twentieth century. Fifteen members of the imperial family held court positions, along with 17 princes of the imperial blood; 17 counts: 9 barons; and 111 other nobles. Only the well born and well-connected could ever hope to attain a position in the Entourage, such was the was the stratification of Peter the Great's Table of Ranks.
