The Che-Chkysh Tract

Che-chkysh is a gorge, and the river with the same name flows along its bottom.

The slopes of the gorge are high steep cliffs. In the past, climbing competitions were held here. You can still often see rock climbers here — an amazing sight!

The surroundings are very picturesque: thick greenery surround the spring with clean and cold water. If you follow the trail further, you will see a small atmospheric waterfall, and a gorgeous view of the famous Katun.

Chemalskaya Hydroelectric Power Station 🏭

▫A place that is mandatory for all tourists passing through or staying in the Chemalsky district.

▫As a rule, this simple route connects to two major locations - the Chemalskaya HPP itself and Patmos Island. It is best to walk from one place to another along the "goat trail", which runs along a rocky picturesque cliff, past the confluence of the Chemal and Katun mountain rivers, past the so-called "Sartakpai Gate". The trail is quite simple, and the walk will not take much time, but it will generously give you beautiful views!

▫Chemalskaya HPP began to be built in 1931, and was commissioned in 1935. At that time, it supplied electricity to the whole village. The power of two units of 460 kW was quite enough. The hydroelectric power station was built by the forces of Siberian Directorate of Special Purpose Camps prisoners. In total, according to some sources, about 700 prisoners worked on the construction. However, there were specialists from freelance brigades - concrete workers, bricklayers, plumbers.

▫The main building is a small 2-storey building. On the ground floor of which there are turbines, and on the second floor there is an engine room with generators, a control panel and other necessary devices.

▫The hydroelectric power plant has experienced a number of severe floods and inundations during its existence: in 1959, 1969, 2011, and 2014 - for a number of reasons, the hydroelectric power plant and infrastructure were simply washed away by streams of water with timber floating down the river. ▫The 2014 flood finally put the station under reconstruction, which continues to this day. The work should be completed soon.

Mountain Spirits Lake ✨

The Lake of Mountain Spirits is located in the area of the village of Aktash, which is next to the Aktash repeater.

💠 Of course, there is a legend about this lake. This is the lake where evil spirits live. If any traveler got tangled paths to its shores, he returned a completely different person, or not returned at all. Allegedly, the spirits, appearing to the traveler in the form of elongated bright translucent shadows dancing over the water, took away a person's strength and joy. The travelers returned home strange and tired. They experienced an incomprehensible weakness and ache. And then they lived for a very short time.

💠 Thus, the lake had a bad reputation. However, in 1842, geologists led by Chikhachev, came to these places. Studies of the soil and bottom showed the abundant presence of cinnabar in them - a mineral containing mercury. Actually, that was the reason why travelers who came to this place on a hot sunny day, felt all these symptoms.

💠 The development of the Aktash mine was started during the Second World War, lasted for 30 years and brought more than 30,000 tons of mercury.

💠 Currently, it is unrealistic to get mercury v***r poisoning. All the mineral was worked out, and the mine was mothballed.

💠 The path to the Lake of Mountain Spirits lies along an impassable road for an ordinary car - you can only get here on prepared UAZ or KAMAZ! And then a long and difficult transition along a huge kurumnik, a swampy path. But WHAT VIEWS! Stunning crimson talus mountains, the purest clear water from turquoise to emerald color, magnificent atmospheric views from a height! A wild, unpopular direction - and that's what it's good for!
