Meet Veliky Novgorod! And its visiting card - St. Sophia Cathedral.
This is one of the most outstanding monuments of ancient Russian architecture. St. Sophia Cathedral is the oldest of all the surviving ancient Russian churches. It was built by prince Vladimir, the son of Yaroslav the Wise, in 1045-1050.
One of the most famous Novgorod legends is associated with the figure of a dove sitting on the highest central cross of the cathedral. During the defeat of Novgorod by Ivan the Terrible in 1570, the dove, according to legend, sat down to rest and turned to stone from the horror he saw. They say that if this stone bird flies away, then the last day of Veliky Novgorod will come!

Russian New Year’s traditions are quite specific and differ from most of the world because in our country New Year is more popular than Christmas. Christmas, on the other hand, is celebrated on January 7, not on the 25th of December. Russian Orthodox Church uses the 'Julian' calendar for religious celebration days, which is why the date is different.

The symbol of a Russian New Year is Ded Moroz (Father Frost), which is a national version of Santa Claus. He is believed to bring gifts to well-mannered children, delivering them in person on New Year's Day. That’s why some people love to dress up for their kids as Ded Moroz. He also has a granddaughter, Snegurochka (Snow Maiden). Their residence is considered to be the town of Veliky Ustyug, Vologda Oblast. Together they spread the festive mood.

Also, there is an informal holiday, The Old New Year which is celebrated as the start of the New Year by the Julian calendar. This tradition dictates not to take down the Christmas tree until then. So a Russian New Year’s celebration lasts for almost two weeks!
