The Bolshoi Drama Theatre was founded in 1918 as one of the first theatres created after the Great October Revolution. It is currently named after its eleventh director G.A.Tovstonogov.
This is one of few Russian theatres, which background and repertoire policy played an important role for quality Russian drama evolvement. Owing to the efforts of today's directors and actors of the company, the traditions declared as the theatre standards at opening thereof are still respected.
The theatre was established with the immediate participation of writer Maxim Gorky, poet Alexander Blok, and Maria Andreeva, Commissar for Theatres and Public Spectacles of the Northern Region Commune Union.

Monument to Catherine II in Saint Petersburg

The monument to Catherine the Great was unveiled in 1873. The statue of Catherine is surrounded by delicately carved figures of the most prominent individuals of her reign: A.V.Suvorov, P.A.Rumyantsev, G.R.Derzhavin, I.I.Betsky, E.R.Dashkova etc. The pocket-park in front of the theatre is now called after Catherine. An idea to install the monument of Catherine the Great emerged in the first years of her reign, however, Catherine II herself was against it.
In order to make the monument's pedestal, different types of granite were brought by river from the Karelian Isthmus to the embankment of the Neva River at the Summer Garden, and then moved to the site by a special man-portable railway road manufactured at San-Galli factory. The pocket-park was developed at the same time. The monument opening was accompanied by a military parade and fireworks. After the ceremony tables were laid in the Public Library to honour the monument authors.

Prince Saint Vladimir's Cathedral in Saint Petersburg

Being a lovely example of crossover between the Baroque and Classical styles, the Prince Saint Vladimir's Cathedral in Saint Petersburg is one of the grandest, brightest and the most ornate cathedrals of the Northern Capital. Catherine the Great, the founder of the Cathedral, engaged Antonio Rinaldi - master of architectural airiness, and this is how an austere, but remarkably heartfelt cathedral appeared in the historical quarters of the city. Its five classically elegant domes seem to soar in the somber sky of Saint Petersburg and the interior pleases the eye with combination of blue and white colors. The parishioners come to the Cathedral to venerate the icons of Saint Equal to the Apostles Prince Vladimir, wonderworking icon of Saint Nicholas and the most ancient sanctuary of the Cathedral - the Kazan icon of the Mother of God.
The first temple in the place of the current Cathedral was built in 1708 - it was a small church dedicated to Saint Nicholas. Later it was replaced by the Assumption Church with two aisles, and in 1740 a stone temple appeared here. A quarter of century later the Italian architect Rinaldi developed a design of a five-dome cathedral with a bell tower, which was completed by the Russian architect Ivan Starov. In 1789 the Cathedral was sanctified in the name of Saint Prince Vladimir. The current iconostasis is dating back to 1823 - it was then when it asserted its recognizable Empire style appearance. In 1845 the Cathedral became the main temple of the Order of Saint Vladimir. Fortunately, Saint Vladimir's Cathedral managed to survive anti-religious campaign of the Soviet government, it escaped destruction.
The most venerated icons include the ancient Kazan icon of the Mother of God; icon of the Mother of God She Who is Quick to Hear, brought from the Mount Athos; the copy of the Mandylion of Edessa from the icon, kept in the Cabin of Peter the Great; the wonderworking icon of Saint Nicholas and the icon of Saint Equal to the Apostles Prince Vladimir - the main aisle of the Cathedral is devoted to him.
One more highly venerated sanctuary of the temple - the reliquary icon, containing parts of 49 saints' relics.

Russian Levsha Museum of Microminiature Art

Russian Levsha Museum of Microminiature Art was established in Saint Petersburg in 2006 by the International Master Craftsmen Guild. It continued previous permanent Russian Levsha exhibition of microminiature art. Presently, the exhibition has upgraded its status, and is a museum now.
To see exhibits of the Russian Levsha Museum of Microminiature Art you will need to use optical instruments as they are genuinely microscopic.
The display includes more than 40 works of Vladimir Aniskin, Russian microminiaturist. Each microminiature is supplied with an optic device for convenient viewing.
The museum occupies the premises, which were previously used as an office space. The premises include a hall, a part of the passage, which serves as a cloakroom, and two small cozy halls, where masterpieces of microminiature are exhibited. They are called masterpieces for reason because each work is unique by idea and technique thereof.
Depending on work complexity, it takes from 3 weeks to 6 - 7 months to complete the work. All operations are performed under the microscope, using special tools. The craftsman works with platinum, gold dust and many other materials.
The interior of the museum is decorated by metal figures of a tree, birds and butterflies, extraordinary chairs and a hand, presenting a rose.

ALEXANDER PALACE

There is a magnificent two-century old building - New Tsarskoselsky (later - the Alexander) Palace in the northern part of the picturesque Alexander Park. It was founded in 1972 by order of Catherine the Great and was constructed on the occasion of marriage to be concluded between her dearly beloved grandson Alexander Pavlovich (future Emperor Alexander I) and Grand Duchess Elizabeth Alexeevna. The construction was completed in May 1796, the last year of the Empress' reign, and on June 12, 1796 Grand Duke Alexander Pavlovich and his spouse moved into the new palace.
Architectural design of the Alexander Palace was developed by the famous Italian architect Giacomo Quarenghi; the works were supervised by the architect P.V. Neelov. Renowned architects L. Rusca, U.K. Macaire, S. Cerfolio, A.A. Ton, V.P. Stasov, D.E. Efimov, A.I. Stackenschneider, A.F. Vidov, S.A. Danin, R.F. Melzer participated in subsequent interior finish and reconstruction.
Gala Parade Halls, faced in artificial marble, were situated along the garden fa?ade of the palace. The hall, divided by wide arcs into three parts, was in the middle of the enfilade. The middle part thereof was named Semi-Circular Hall, from the eastern part it was adjoined by Portrait Hall, from the western part - by the Billiard Hall (or the Marble Hall). From the left side the enfilade was closed by the Mountain Hall, which opened to the Library rooms and further to the Formal Reception Room; at the time of the last owners the right corner was occupied by the Palace Chapel (at the time of Nicholas I - the Bedroom). Rooms of the Right Wing included the Concert Hall, bordering closely on the Formal Reception Room, and a number of living rooms.

The Great Palace of Peterhof

The Great Palace of Peterhof The Great Palace is most recognizable attraction of Saint Petersburg, its architectural landmark. Formerly a cultural center of Saint Petersburg high society, it is now one of most interested museums of Peterhof. Planned in the early 18th century simple chambers had turned into a luxurious summer residence of imperial persons by the mid-century, owing to B.F.Rastrelli known by his architectural masterpieces and creator of the Winter Palace, the Katherine Palace of Tsarskoye Selo, and the Smolny Cathedral.
The Great Cascade fountain complex, one of the most beautiful attractions of Saint Petersburg and world-scale monument, is located in front of the Palace.
The Palace itself was completely ruined during the Second World War and owing to the conservation architects and preserved drawings now it looks every bit as it was before. The Baroque Palace with its conservative decoration and adornments magnificently shows itself, however, most interesting is hidden in the insides thereof. On the other hand, the interiors were created using all available decoration techniques, including stucco work, carving, painting and golden decor shining in every room of the palace and so much loved by Russian tsars.
All 30 rooms are worth visiting, from the dancing hall to a small reception room, where visitors were registered by a secretary. It holds total of more than 3000 different exhibits, including fantastical pictures, customised furniture, and even some personal things of imperial persons.
Peter the Great's Oak Office is of special interest, being a real relic.

Kazan Cathedral in Saint Petersburg (the Cathedral of Our Lady of Kazan) www.slktour.com

Kazan Cathedral in Saint Petersburg is the place which houses the most important shrines of the city - the miraculous icon of Our Lady of Kazan. This Cathedral is also a monument to Russian military glory.
Crown Prince Pavel Petrovich, when in Europe, was bowled over by the beauty and harmony of St. Peter's Basilica in Rome and the square in front of it surrounded by columns. In 1799, being enthroned, Pavel I wished to see the like building in the capital of Russia and invited tenders for the best cathedral design to replace the old church of the Nativity of the Virgin (known as the Kazan Church that time) built in the 30s of the 18th century. The church housed one of the main shrines of Russia - the miraculous icon of Our Lady of Kazan. The main requirement was to make the cathedral resemble the Eternal City's holy shrine he caught fancy of. Out of all works submitted approved was the project of young and talented architect Andrey Voronikhin. After Pavel I was murdered, the cathedral's foundation stone was laid on August 27, 1801, which event was attended by Emperor Alexander I.
The architect was faced by a difficult task. The new cathedral was supposed to be built at the elongated section on the Nevsky Prospect going from east to west. The alters of all orthodox churches always look to the east, while the main fa?ade and the entrance - to the west, hence it occurred so that the future cathedral's northern fa?ade (side facade) looked to the Nevsky Prospect . Voronikhin found an elegant solution and turned the side fa?ade into the main one by adding a monumental semi-circular colonnade thereto looking to the city's main street. 96 columns in four rows also remind those on the square in front of the St. Peter's Basilica in Rome.
After the war of 1812, 27 captured banners of the defeated French army were moved to the Cathedral, which later on housed the keys from fortresses and cities of Europe and banners captured by the Russian army during 1813-1814 campaigns. Glorious Filed-Marshall Mikhail I.Kutuzov was buried at the wall of the Cathedral. Two bronze statutes of Kutuzov and Barclay de Tolli, famous Russian generals, stand in front of the Cathedral.

The Bath Block

The Bath Block is exclusively elegant; nowadays it can boasts unbelievable charm of its architectural forms though was started from a small wooden bathhouse.
In Empress Catherine II times, who was not immune to the ideals of comfort, a swimming pool with a raisable bottom was installed in the Bath Block with water supply from the Finnish Gulf directly. It was an uncommon and vibrant engineering approach at that time. A fountain of fresh water named "Kid" was in the center of the pool; an ante-room, rest-room and a room for cold baths were also there.
In 1866 the stone building to the design of famous architect Edward Lvovich Gan replaced the wooden one. It was the epoch of Emperor Alexander II known with its progress and turning points.
The newly built block was used for spa procedures. Various wondrous devices appeared, like a chandelier shower one can still see in the Bath Block museum.
The chandelier shower, water spraying ball and about ten other devices the august families used for washing meet visitors in the unique Bath Block museum.
The Bath Block part intended for guests still holds the Behaviour Code created by omnipresent Peter I.

Rumayntsev Mansion in Saint Petersburg

After the death of the famous Count Nikolay Rumantsev, his mansion was transformed into a museum holding the host's collections. Initially, a visit to the museum was free, but after Nikolay's brother, who sponsored it, died, the museum was fast to decay.
Later on, the mansion was handed over to the Museum of History and Development of Leningrad, and now it is an affiliate of the State Museum of Saint Petersburg History.
The museum holds total of 4 expositions. The first one shows interesting historical documents, photos, and portraits of the Rumyantsevs and other owners of the mansion, the building history and ups and downs of life thereof. The second exposition is devoted to the New Economic Policy epoch: visitors have a chance to see the interiors of living rooms and kitchens of communal apartments, an atelier, restaurant, and show-repair shop. They can also listen to the radio old songs and watch city film chronicle of the time.
The third exposition is about Petersburg of the 30s. There are posters and placards on the walls, and various household items and photos on the tables and shelves. Here one can also see costumes of that time and different products than manufactured. The final exposition shows the events of the siege period in Leningrad. A bomb-shelter is realistically recreated; there is a day rate of bred on the plate - a 125 g piece of bred, and Tanya Savicheva's diary on the other side of the glass.

Saint Isaac's Cathedral

Saint Isaac's Cathedral is currently the largest orthodox cathedral of Saint Petersburg and one of the highest dome structures in the world. Its history started in 1710, the year when a wooden church, dedicated to Saint Isaac of Dalmatia, a Byzantine saint, was built. Peter the Great was born on the feast day of this saint. In 1712 Peter the Great was married to YekaterinaAlexeevna, his second spouse, in this church. Later, the wooden church was replaced with the church made of stone. The third cathedral was built in the second half of the 18th c., however, immediately after completion of works, the cathedral was announced to be disharmonious with the grand buildings of the city center. The Emperor Alexander I invited bids on the best project of reconstruction thereof. 9 years later the project of the young French architect Auguste de Montferrand was approved, and the works started.
The Cathedral construction lasted over 40 years and required enormous efforts. However, the result exceeded all expectations. The monumental view of the Cathedral is emphasized by square design thereof. 43 types of minerals were used upon construction. The pedestal is cladded with granite, walls - with 40-50 cm thick gray marble blocks. Saint Isaac's Cathedral is framed by sturdy eight-column porticos, decorated with statues and bas-reliefs, on four sides. The enormous gilded dome on the drum, surrounded by granite columns, is towering above the colossal Cathedral. The dome itself is made of metal and approximately 100 kg of pure gold was spent on gilding thereof.
Saint Isaac's Cathedral is sometimes referred to as the gemstones museum. The internal walls are cladded with white marble, there are decorative panels of green and yellow marble, jasper and porphyry thereon. Karl Bryullov decorated the inside of the main dome with paintings, VasilyShebuev, Fyodor Bruni, Ivan Vitaly and many other famous artists and sculptors worked on the interior of the Cathedral.
The Cathedral is 101.5 m high, the building accommodates 12,000 people at one time. However, the architect Montferrand himself believed that the Cathedral could accommodate 7000 people, given that each lady occupied at least 1 sq.m. because of their full skirts.
The Colonnade of Saint Isaac's Cathedral deserves particular attention. This is the most well-known observation deck of Saint Petersburg. From a height of 43 m you can enjoy a view to the Neva and the central districts of the city. The view is especially beautiful in white nights - there is something mystical in this ghostly light. The only way to the Colonnade is to take the winding stairs.
The Colonnade construction started in 1837 immediately after the dome installation. The Cathedral was built using the early 19th c technologies, monolithic granite blocks were delivered from the Gulf of Finland, and a special mechanism was constructed to lift them to the needed height. The construction was mainly conducted by manual labour of serfs.

Zoo in St. Petersburg

The Leningrad Zoo is a wonderful place in all respects. Take at least its name - is in the city of St. Petersburg, and is called for some reason Leningrad. But first things first.
The zoo in St. Petersburg was opened in 1865 as a private menagerie. But little is known about his fate before the Great Patriotic War, since in 1940 the entire archive of the zoo was destroyed.
Leningrad Zoo is one of the smallest in area in Russia, but here in good conditions there are almost 2500 representatives of the animal world belonging to 500 species. Among the animals there are even long-livers: moose, deer of David, giraffes, bison, wormhole goat, boar, saimiri, Japanese macaques, condor, black storks and some other animals. One of the largest departments of the zoo is the department of ornithology. It contains about 150 species of birds, of which 18 species are included in the Red Book of IUCN.
Most visitors to the zoo like to admire the magnificent predatory animals, among whichundefined African lion, Ussuri tigers, jaguar, snow leopard, puma, European lynx, famous pair of white bears Menshikov and Uslad, wolves and brown bear. No less interesting are the so-called "small predators", for example, raccoons, wolverines, sables, stone and forest martens, caresses, American mink.

The Anichkov Bridge

One of the most recognizable bridges of Saint Petersburg is the bridge across the Fontanka River in Nevsky Prospect decorated with four horse sculptures.
Its total length is 54.6 m, it is 37.9 m wide. There are three traffic lines thereof, as well as pedestrian paths.
The famous bronze Horse Tamers designed by the Russian sculptor, Baron Peter Klodt von Jurgensburg appeared in 1841. The first depicts a young man leading a horse, the other - a youth attempting to control a mettlesome horse. The symmetrical sculptures on the western side of the bridge were mounted five times. The first two of the statues were sent to Berlin by order of Nicholas II as a present to Prussian king, and those tamers have still been in Berlin's Kleist Park. The second pair can be found in Naples as a gift to the king of both Sicilies from Empress Alexandra Feodorovna. After that Kolodt decided not to recast but designed completely new statues, showing four stages of horse taming.
It is of interest that two horses looking at the Admiralty are shod, while the other two are not. They say that in the 18th century the blacksmith's shops were located in Liteyny Prospect. So, the horses are unshod when getting towards Liteyny Prospect and shod when getting back.

Winter Palace
The Winter Palace on the Palace Square of St. Petersburg is the main attraction of the northern capital, from 1762 to 1904 served as the official winter residence of Russian emperors. Due to the richness and diversity of architectural and sculptural decoration, the palace has no equal in St. Petersburg. Italian architect B. F. Rastrelli in 1754 began to erect this grandiose structure in the style of lush baroque with elements of French rococo in the interiors for the Empress Elizabeth, but the end of construction was during the reign of Catherine II. In the completed palace there were more than 1000 rooms, 117 staircases, almost two thousand windows and doors.
Later on the Palace Embankment was erected a special building for the storage of Catherine the Great works of art - the Small Hermitage. Then the buildings of the Old Hermitage and the Hermitage Theater were successively attached to Zimniy. In the XIX century. On Millionnaya street erected the building of the New Hermitage. Thus, the Winterundefined The palace became the center of a vast palace complex. The interiors of the palace were repeatedly altered, only the front Jordanian staircase was preserved from the original design. Through her on the Feast of Baptism members of the imperial family and the higher clergy went out to perform the rite of the water consecration to the "Jordan" - a hole in the ice of the Neva.

Its obelisks, stelae, memorial gardens and groves are planted and planted in honor of those who stood to death near the city walls. Western and Eastern aviaries of Peterhof

Peterhof is so rich in luxurious palaces, fountains and pavilions that there is simply no time and energy for some secondary monuments. However, being here for the first time, it is worth to deviate a little from the beaten paths to get acquainted with the "tidbits" of the imperial heritage. For example, go to the Lower Park. Here, a little apart from the tourist routes, there are two elegant buildings with a very amusing name - the Western and Eastern aviaries. Air pavilions, standing on the shore of a picturesque pond, are rightly called the real adornment of the park.
The famous aviary of the Lower Park (from the French les volieres - poultry houses) are located on two sides of a small Menagerizion pond. These pavilions were erected in the 18th century, namely in the period from 1721 to 1722.
A visitor, step by step strolling along the green alleys of the Lower Park, sooner or later will come out to a small neat pond near whichundefined Sheltered two pavilions, surrounded by greenery. They remind multifaceted arbors, crowned with a dome with a flashlight. The walls of the enclosures are almost entirely glazed openings, due to which much light enters into the interior.
The facade of the pavilions is faced with tuff, oyster shells and so-called "scum" (the material, in fact, the waste that appeared during the smelting of cast iron). The domes are decorated with images of Diana and Actaeon, plant paintings with flowers, leaves and wreaths. The pavilion pavilions are decorated with intricate ornaments.
In 1772, the Eastern aviary was connected with a bathhouse and the Menagerizm garden. In the first quarter of the 19th century, the painting of the Eastern Pavilion was redone, while the original painting in the Western Pavilion remained practically unchanged.
