This is Medou with his camel Baksheesh, they both worked on our April desert trek. Medou told us he named his camel Baksheesh because he trained him with tips (rewards) the kind way and as far as we are concerned, the only way, to train a camel.

Camels are working animals here, they are indispensable for travelling thoughtfully in the desert, without disturbing wildlife or damaging the landscape. They are animals that like to be travelling, they also like to be close to people at times and you will often wake up to find they have shuffled closer to your tent during the night. They are fascinating, clever and incredibly adaptable creatures with a very long association with the nomad people here. So much so that although you will see what appear to be ‘wild’ camels out in the desert, they will all belong to someone...there are no truly wild camels here.

Oh and only the chaps work, the females hang out in the desert and have babies

Camels grow slowly and live a long time, they are essential to life here x

We can’t promise every camel will be as gentle here in Morocco , but we take care to only work with the best here at Camp Sahara 🙂

These desert goats are hardy and feisty creatures. Here a couple of youngsters test out their sparring skills at a Chegaga oasis we stopped at for lunch once

A few Images from our first camp of the year last week, which was also the first from our very own base at Dar al Fananna (the artists house) which we have been working hard on over the past couple of years.

It was also a long awaited return for our UK team member Katherine, who is looking to spend much more time here in the future working on her art and sharing her love of the desert with visitors
