In 1967, Dian Fossey’s pioneering work to study and protect mountain gorillas in Rwanda began. Although Fossey’s life was cut short, her work has continued through the Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund and has grown into conservation efforts for other wildlife in Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of the Congo, extensive scientific research and education efforts, and community development programs for the people who live near the gorillas.

Gorilla Permit

A gorilla permit is an authorization card that allows you to visit the mountain gorillas, be it in Uganda and Rwanda. With this permit per person, you pay to spend one hour in company of one family of mountain gorillas.

The fees for a gorilla permit are important because they limit the number of tourist access to the parks and also contribute to the conservation efforts of the gorillas. It doesn’t matter how long you take to see the gorillas, its still the same price and for one hour.

Happy Birthday Diani Fossey, would have been 92 years old.

Before she was murdered on Dec. 26, 1985, Dian dedicated her life to saving mountain gorillas. As the mountain gorillas reached a population low of about 240 individuals, she worried they would be extinct by the year 2000, but her sacrifice and legacy have ensured their survival today.

Repost .pandita - After spending a week in Rwanda and travelling all over the country I fell deeply in love. In love with the gorgeous endless rolling hills, the unbelievable nature and the beautiful resilient people and their positive outlook on life.

I learned so much about this country, it’s incredibly painful history and the nation’s collective decision to not allow themselves to be victims of their past, and their will to work towards a bright future together.
And they did.
Rwanda is one of, if not the most, inspiring place I have ever visited.

The cherry on the cake of course was visiting the majestic mountain gorillas in their natural habitat.
You really have to earn it. The treks can be long and strenuous, on slippery and muddy paths in the pouring rain or under the scorching sun. All whilst trying to avoid the stinging nettles that are eager to pierce through your clothes.

But once we did reach the gorillas, time stood still. Being able to watch them interact with each other, and gaze into their eyes truly felt like a spiritual experience. It’s impossible to describe.
To all my nature and animal lover friends, please - Visit Rwanda. 🇷🇼🦍❤️
