Asli Hassan Abade was the first Somali woman to become an Air Force pilot in Africa and the Middle East. She is a military figure and civil activist.

In 1976, Asli Hassan Abade broke barriers and made history by becoming the first female military pilot in Somalia and the entire continent of Africa. Her achievement was not without challenges as she faced gender-based discrimination and skepticism from some who believed that flying planes was exclusively a man's job.

Asli Hassan Abade revealed to the BBC that the then president of Somalia granted her the opportunity to pursue her passion for flying, only after she had threatened to seek qualification abroad. Despite initial doubts about her abilities, she persevered, trained and qualified as a pilot, paving the way for other women in the field.

Now aged 65 and based in the United States, Asli Hassan Abade seeks to inspire young girls in Africa and beyond by sharing her story of courage and determination. Her legacy serves as a reminder of the power of determination and persistence in the face of adversity.
