RUBAVU CITY TOUR

There is no doubt that Rubavu is one of the most popular holiday destinations in the country. For those who have been there, it’s easy to understand why most people prefer Rubavu to unwind and soak in some fresh air. The district’s name originates from Rubavu Mountain. Rubavu which means a rib, was named so
because ―A rib is an indispensable part of a person‖ according to local residents.
The proximity to gorilla viewing in the Volcanoes National Park and across the DRC border in the Virunga National Park, positions Rubavu as an alternative accommodation base for leisure travelers in search of the region’s premier attraction.
Being near to Goma, a major city in Eastern DR Congo, also makes Gisenyi town a service gateway offering first-rate hospitality, banking, retail, transport and other services associated mainly with the cross-border trade.
Hiking along Congo Nile trail, Mount Rubavu Climbing, Gisenyi city tour, kayaking, boat riding, fishing, hot spring tour, coffee and tea tour, ecotourism in Mukura-Gishwati Park, historical and cultural experience are among the recreational activities that tourists experience in Rubavu.
The things that make Rubavu unique are not only the place itself but also the along the road to the district and the surroundings.
Along the way to Rubavu, tourists saw different things that include mountains as well as the chain of Volcanoes and rivers.
Inside the lake, tourists saw the methane gas extracting machines and were surprised to see how stable those machines are but confused about how they are tied deep in the lake.
At the top of the mountain, you can entirely see the town of Gisenyi, Lake Kivu as well as the neighboring city of Goma. The mountain has interesting history as it had the bases of Germans during their battles with Belgians in the First World War.

TRAVEL INFORMATION ABOUT GORILLA TREKKING IN THE VOLCANOES NATIONAL PARK

Rwanda known to the many as the land of a thousand hills is a home to the endangered
mountain gorillas. Inhabiting the remote forested mountains in volcanoes national
park situated in north western Rwanda, mountain gorillas are some of the closest wild
human beings relatives.
Volcanoes national park is a home to half of the mountain gorilla population in the Virunga
massif with a total of 10 habituated mountain gorilla families that are open to tourist
visitation. On a single day – all year round , tourists heading for a gorilla safari in
Rwanda first gather at volcanoes national park headquarters in Kinigi where they are
briefed, allocated to the mountain gorilla family they will be tracking and to the guide who
will be leading them in this great wildlife expedition. Tracking gorillas starts in the morning
and ranges from 1 to 8 hours of hiking depending on the movement of the gorillas and the
luck of the tourists.
Each of the mountain gorilla family is tracked by strictly a group of 8 tourists in a day which
means 88 mountain gorilla tracking permits are available every day.
Currently, Rwanda is the number one and most preferred mountain gorilla-tracking
destination.
In order to ensure the wellbeing of the mountain gorillas and the tourists, the Rwanda
development board put up mountain gorilla tracking rules and guidelines that should be
followed and observed by tourists so that they enjoy the exclusive mountain gorilla safaris
to the fullest and they include the following:
Before encountering the gorilla
a) Always follow the guide’s instruction because the guides navigate the national park
every day and therefore are aware and understand every part of the forest.
b) Always keep in the tourist tracking groups especially while in the forest to avoid
getting lost.
c) Avoid making a lot of noise as it can distract the mountain gorilla and other wildlife
species in the forest.
d) Avoid littering any rubbish in the national park.
e) Do not go for tracking when sick.

On encounter with the mountain gorilla
a) Always keeping a reasonable distance away from the mountain gorillas at least 7
meters.
b) Not using flash photography while taking photos of the mountain gorillas as it may
irritate them.
c) Minimizing noise until you are at least about 200 meters from the gorillas.
d) Avoid eating in the presence of the mountain gorillas.
e) Do not touch the mountain gorillas. When they come towards your way, just remain
where you are and avoid a direct eye contact with the gorillas.
f) Do not imitate the mountain gorilla behavior like beating the chest because it might
send the wrong message to the mountain gorillas.
g) Tourists are allowed to be in the presence of the mountain gorillas for strictly one
hour, which is intended to minimize chances of disease, spread from the human’s
to mountain gorillas. There are high chances of disease spread from humans to the
gorillas because about 98%of their DNA is similar to humans.
h) If the above are observed and well followed by tourists, they can enjoy exclusive
and once in a lifetime experience. Tourist heading for tracking should carry enough
drinking water because the hike through the forest is a little strenuous causing a lot
of sweat and it is therefore wise to keep hydrating (drinking water).
i) Tourists are also recommended to wear long sleeved shirts and long pants because
mountain gorilla tracking is done in the forest with a lot of plant vegetation some of
which cause skin irritation when in contact. Carrying a raincoat or water proof pant
can never be a bad idea because rainfall in volcanoes national park Is highly
unpredictable and can therefore occur at any time of the day.

Chimpanzees trekking in Nyungwe National Park.
The section of Nyungwe Forest National were the chimpanzees are tracked also begins in Cyamudongo, a 4 and half hour drive from Kigali. ... The humans and the chimpanzees share 98% of their DNA, making them more exciting to be observed, most especially when they display what we call human behavior.
Chimpanzee trekking in Nyungwe forest starts off from three reception centers, that’s Uwinka, Kitabi and Gisakura where the tourists meet the park rangers and the tourists are also expected to be at the reception as early as 4: 30am and by 5 am, you drive to the starting point of the trek into the forest. Since the chimps nest each and every night, there are the trackers who go ahead of the trekking group of finding them and communicate with the ranger guides. The tourists spend only 1 hour with the chimanzees in Nyungwe forest National park, and get to observe them so closely going about their own lives and see the human like features and behavior that makes them our closest relatives with 98.7 % DNA.The chimps also communicate by way of deafening screams, the loud hoots and booming hitting of the tree barks and the buttress. It’s such a hair rising moment like no other and so memorable.
These habituated chimpanzee group in Nyungwe forest is also bigger with about 60 individuals and due to the greatness of the forest and terrain, it gives few chances of seeing the chimps, while the group in Cyamudongo forest that has a smaller number of about 30 chimps giving the most successful sightings that are given in the small size that is covered to find the chimps in any part.
Chimpanzee trekking experience is so different from that of gorilla trekking as the chimps are running around in the tree canopies and there may be running after to catch up and the sightings are more rushed and sporadic.
The section of Nyungwe Forest National were the chimpanzees are tracked also begins in Cyamudongo, a 4 and half hour drive from Kigali. This forest is also Africa’s oldest montane forest and its home to over 13 secies of primates including over 500 chimpanzees. Also as you pass through the forest, you will hear the whoops and the cackles of L’Hoest’s and the black faced vervet monkeys.
The main challenge with these chimpanzees is with finding them, as they are not so habituated and are always shy, also their human instincts are so strong and they show a lot of curiosity and the eagerness when the tourists are around.
The humans and the chimpanzees share 98% of their DNA, making them more exciting to be observed, most especially when they display what we call human behavior. Chimp trekking is so fast paced and so exciting and in our opinion which makes it more of the adventure than gorilla trekking. There are also few well established paths, denser forests to go through and discovering them on one’s own also makes it more exciting.
The chimpanzee trekking permits are also $100 which is less than that of the mountain gorillas. There are over 64 permits per day that are issued in Rwanda for chimp trekking and only 8 people per day for chimpanzee tracking. Therefore it’s advisable to book these permits well in advance and a year is not too soon.
Considering Rwanda for the primate adventure is financially more conceivable when considering the chimpanzees instead of the mountain gorillas and it’s an option that will not disappoint. More so, there are many stories of the people that are coming to Rwanda and bumping into the gorillas as you travel in the forest and the sightings at one of the lodges. The mountain gorillas are also habituated and also feel somewhat more comfortable around the humans and have been known to venture to the lodges in search of food. There are also no guarantees of this happening, and in case you are lucky it’s very possible.
