Did you know that are the Third largest mammals on earth?

The name hippopotamus comes from ancient Greek to mean “river horse”. Whether this is due to how they walk on the river bed – which looks like racing horses is why hippos are called river horses remains uncertain.

Hippos are among the most dangerous animals due to their aggressive and unpredictable nature.

There are many factors leading to the extinction of these mammals. Drought has led to habitat loss of hippos while hunting and poaching have also resulted to other adversities.

World Hippo day is a perfect opportunity for all of us to educate people and raise awareness about protecting these mammals and preventing their extinction. The day calls of a collective effort of people across the world to come together and protect them as they are threatened by habitat loss and poaching.

Akagera National Park lies in eastern Rwanda, hugging the border with Tanzania. It's characterized by woodland, swamps, low mountains and savannah. The varied terrain shelters wildlife including zebras, giraffes, elephants, lions and hundreds of bird species, such as the rare shoebill stork. In the southern part of the park, vast Lake Ihema is home to hippos and crocodiles.

Did you know Gahinga is known in a local Rufumbira or Kinyarwanda as a small pile of stone? It’s believed to have an elevation of 3473m with a a swampy caldera on its peak with 180m wide. The bamboo forest on this mountain are a habitat to the world endangered mountain Gorillas with other uniquely animal species Ie Golden monkeys and bush birds.

The Rwenzori js a montane , the trails to the snow peaks following glacier- caved valleys filled with Fantastically coloured and the rare Afro-alpine that include giant forms of lobelias, Heather's and groundsels.
