Minister Derjacques welcomes entry of Discover Airlines to Seychelles in 2025
The Minister for Transport, Mr. Antony Derjacques, welcomes the confirmation of Discover Airlines (4Y) who intends to launch flights to Seychelles in the 2025 winter season, which spans over the period of October 2025 to March 2026.
Discover Airlines, a Lufthansa Group airline, informed the Seychelles Civil Aviation Authority in December 2024 that it will operate two weekly flights, beginning on 26 October 2025 to March 2026. The airline will operate from Frankfurt direct to Seychelles.
After landing in Seychelles, it will fly onward to Mauritius where it will drop off remaining passengers on board. It will then pick up in Mauritius passengers bound for Frankfurt and make another stop in Seychelles on the same day, to board other passengers flying to Germany.
The carrier will be the second German based airline to operate the Seychelles-Frankfurt route. Condor continues with its seasonal flights to Seychelles, operating primarily during the peak winter seasons.
Demand from the German tourism market has seen a surge following the COVID-19 pandemic. In 2023, Seychelles recorded a total of over 54,000 visitors from Germany, ranking the market first in the tourism leader board. The figures being compiled for 2024 indicates that the German tourism market remains at the top. With the introduction of Discover on the route, it is expected that the number of German visitors will reach new levels for 2025.
This positive development is a direct result of the discussions led by Minister Derjacques during the 16th ICAO Air Services Negotiation (ICAN2024) event which was held in Malaysia in October 2024.
During the meeting, the Seychelles delegation engaged with representatives from the German Aviation Authority and modernized the air services agreement between the two countries.
The modern arrangement allows for the designation of Discover and more frequencies for the operation.
Highlighting Germany's position as a key tourism market for Seychelles, Minister Derjacques stated; “Germany has always been an essential partner in Seychelles' tourism sector. The introduction of Discover Airlines flights represents a significant step forward in strengthening our connectivity to Europe. Visitors from Europe represents more than 70% of the total number of tourists to Seychelles. We are excited to welcome more visitors from Germany as it promises to yield direct economic benefits for the people of Seychelles.”
The Minister also emphasised the importance of collaboration to ensure a smooth introduction of the new carrier; “We are working closely with the Seychelles Civil Aviation Authority (SCAA) and other stakeholders to finalise operational plans. This milestone reflects our ongoing commitment to enhancing Seychelles' aviation landscape and providing seamless travel options for visitors and residents alike.”
Further planning meetings between Discover Airlines and SCAA are scheduled for early 2025 as the country prepares to welcome this new addition to its skies.
With Germany as a prominent source market, Seychelles anticipates an increase in tourist arrivals and stronger economic ties as a result of this expanded air connectivity.
