Mahdi (Muhammad Ahmad bin Abd Allah) was a regional leader of who or maimed himself and Islamic messiah and fought against the and Turko-Egyptian rules at the end of the 19th century. The uprising last over 15 years and was known as Mahdi Wars. The rebels seized and held it for several years before the troops brutally suppressed it and took over. Today, Mahdi is viewed as a leader of an independent Sudan and his remains are in an elaborate tomb in the heartof the historic center of Khartoum. The of the Mahdi was built after his death, in 1886, but was later demolished by the British after the Battle of Omdurman in 1889. Nearly 50 years later, the tomb was restored in 1947.
