Did you know in the Diksam plateau there are most of the renowned endemic species of Socotra Island? ⬇️

Dragon Blood trees, Cucumber trees, and Bottle trees are only some of the typical flora that we can find on this plateau, but what always strikes you the most are the landscapes that surround you while you admire the natural heritage of Socotra.

Mountains, canyons, rivers, and natural swimming pools are here, waiting to be discovered. In 2008 Socotra was included in the UNESCO World Heritage list, and when you see it with your own eyes it's easy to understand why.

When you reach Socotra, the first thing that comes to your mind is: "Have we landed on the right island ?"

The impact of the island is very peculiar, you have this harsh mountain massif in the background and you can't see any famous Dragon Blood trees or the beautiful sea. You are alone in front of a small building saying "Socotra airport".

But then your trip starts, you drive towards the eastern part of the island and you begin to cross very different beautiful scenery: green hills, karstic mountains, tall white dunes, and wonderful windy beaches. Not forgetting the beautiful villages that you encounter on the road! Very small and rural, with children coming out of nowhere to greet you. 🤩

Eritrea's cultural and historical heritage is peppered with a fusion of different ethnic groups, religions, traditions, and languages. ✨

The Auxumite empire was in its best days one of the most influential and powerful empires in the world, but upon its fall there was a slow succession of invasions and colonizations that led Eritrea to develop nowadays an intriguing mix. 📖

Even though the latest colonizations have strongly influenced the country, the country managed to conserve its oldest culture such as the Ge'ez language, whose alphabet highly influenced the Tigriniya language, the main one today in Eritrea. 🔝

But the mix does not end here, because despite being a very small country, here we can find at least 9 different ethnic groups managing to live together. All these ethnic groups preserve their traditions and languages, making a trip to Eritrea very interesting for cultural, historical, and anthropological reasons! ✈️

Do you know that near the Boya hills, lives one of the most intriguing tribes of South Sudan ?🔍 Once closer to the other tribes of the Murle group, the Larim-Boya tribe, after an argument over dinner with another clan, moved west to this beautiful mountainous area, where today we can find hundreds of their villages. 🏔️

They have very interesting customs and a different and unique language. The architectural style of their houses and their body art differ from the other tribes despite they are not that far from each other. ✨

The Larim people hold a profound reverence for the environment around them and its resources, and their farming practices are a testament to their harmony with nature. 🌾

During our 7-day journey of discovery through South Sudan we pass through several fantastic natural environments that are perfectly suited to accommodate the villages of the various tribes we visit. ✨

We start with the mythical White Nile, which starts from Lake Victoria and passes through Juba on its way to Khartoum. Just near it, large green areas develop, perfect for the Mundari's herds of cows and their camps. 🐮

Moving away from the Nile, we pass through a mountainous and very green area, the Boya Hills, where many very rare medicinal trees can be found. This is the territory of several tribes such as the Larim, Lotuko, Didinga, Lopit, and others. 🏔️

Moving away from the mountains we reach the huge territory of the Toposa, who live in the plains, with very green Savannah-like vegetation, where they can cultivate sorghum and cassava.🌳

Did you know the Toposa people are known for their exceptional skills in crafting beautiful beadwork and intricate jewelry? Their artistry reflects their deep connection to nature and spirituality. 💍

The Toposa tribe is part of a greater ethnic group which includes the Turkana in Northern Kenya, the Karamajong in Northern Uganda, and the Nyangatom in Ethiopia. Their economy depends entirely on cattle and, in remote areas, Toposa women still dress in beaded skirts of great beauty and scarify their faces and bodies. 😦

The relationship between the Mundari tribe and their cattle is something beyond our understanding! 💓

Even though the Mundari live not that far away from the capital Juba, they are not interested in embracing modernity as they live peacefully in their small settlements taking care of their cows 🐄

Their lives revolve around their cattle; they settle where there can be enough food for the cows, and they sleep in the middle of hundreds of them during the night as they are part of their family. Since childhood, they are taught to collect the f***s and burn them to keep away insects and to use the ashes to protect both the cows' skin and theirs 😦

The moment when they sprinkle the ashes on the cows seems like a ritual 💓

South Sudan is the newest African country but, surprisingly, here we can find some of the most enduring tribes of the African continent 🌍

The creation of borders between countries has often been the result of a long process of struggles and independence among peoples who differed from each other on cultural, religious, or historical grounds📖

This may not be true in Africa because, on most occasions, borders were drawn by the various colonizing powers who did not thoroughly understand the local populations. This was probably one of the reasons that led to the independence of Sud Sudan from Sudan in 2011 as their differences were enormous in all respects. 🕌⛪

In South Sudan, for example, we can find some of the most authentic tribes existing to this day that differ from those of "North Sudan" in so many ways. 🔍
