Sri Lanka to implement “One Chop” visa-free system for 38 countries - With immediate effect...

The Cabinet of Ministers has authorized President Ranil Wickremesinghe to implement visa-free access for 38 countries with immediate effect, Foreign Minister Ali Sabry announced today.

Taking to ‘X’, Minister Sabry said the government has adopted Singapore’s streamlined ‘one-chop’ approach, where a visa or a visa extension is issued with just one official stamp or seal (‘chop’) on the applicant’s passport.

The Foreign Minister further said that this decision will help ease congestion at visa counters.

Meanwhile, former Tourism Minister and Presidential Advisor on Tourism Affairs Harin Fernando also confirmed that the ‘One-Chop’ visa-free system will be launched with immediate effect.

Also taking to ‘X’, the former minister said the Cabinet has given the President full authority to execute the operation.

The move comes as tourists are facing a delay at the Katunayake Aiport following the issue with the newly introduced visa issuance system in Sri Lanka. (Newswire)

On arrival Visa to Sri Lanka is now in place

The Department of Immigration and Emigration of Sri Lanka has deactivated the online visa application portal, www.srilankaevisa.lk as per a Supreme Court Order and therefore, the online visa application facility is not available.

In its place, Visa on arrival is now fully operationalized for those who are visiting Sri Lanka.

Accordingly, it would be appreciated, if you could share this information among relevant parties, please.

Sri Lanka gives on-arrival visa at airport, VFS Global e-visa site shut on court order

ECONOMYNEXT – Sri Lanka has shut a electronic visa application site run by consortium involving companies called VFS Global, IVS and GBS, after a court order suspended the the contract awarded without competitive tender.

“We have been notified of certain interim orders issued by the Supreme Court of Sri Lanka today pertaining to the agreement under which this platform is operated,” a statement on front page of the website said.

“In view of these orders, the website is suspended effective 2 August at 17:00 hours Sri Lanka Standard Time.”

The Department of Immigration continued to issue on arrival visas physically to tourists from eligible countries, airport officials said.

Court also ordered the status quo that prevailed before April 18, when the site was operated by Mobitel, a domestic company.

There was no immediate information on when the old site would be restored. Department sources said a decision is likely to be taken next week.

Mobitel was charging one dollar for the service while VFS Global was charging different prices ranging from 10 dollars to 18.5 dollars and more depending on the category of visa. (Colombo/Aug03/2024)

Permanent residence for persons of Sri Lanka descent, foreign spouses – Sunday Island 02 Jun 2024

ECONOMYNEXT –Persons of Sri Lanka descent, including those who have renounced their citizenship, and foreign spouses would be able to get permanent residence status, under regulations gazetted by the ministry of public security.

A person of Sri Lankan descent or “whose citizenship of sri Lanka has ceased under sections 19, 20 or 21 of the Citizenship Act” as well as a foreign spouse would be eligible to apply after six months of marriage under the new regulations.

However, if the marriage is dissolved before 5 years, the PR status would automatically cease.A person of Sri Lanka descent is someone whose parents, grand parents or great grand parents were born in or are still citizens of the island.

A fee of 1,000 dollars would be charged. Children would also be allowed PR status at 400 dollars.In Sr Lanka regulations issued by gazette (subsidiary legislation) by most laws, usually have to be presented to parliament before they are implemented by the agency concerned.

Ex-Sri Lankans earlier had to apply for dual citizenship, which was not allowed by some countries.However permanent resident status is provided by many countries.

Sri Lanka’s PR status allows persons to work, run businesses, buy or inherit property.There are large numbers of Sri Lankans who have obtained citizenship in foreign countries who have not applied for dual citizenship.

Sri Lanka also does not have a naturalization path unlike Western nations which leads to them exiting whatever assets they have in this country and investing it in the new countries.A controversy has also arisen at the moment with legislators losing their parliamentary seats due to being foreign citizens.

All arrangements have been made to commence the implementation of new visa methodology and new online methodology of the Department of Immigration and Emigration with effect from 17.04.2024.

The new visa methodology, relevant fees, requirements to be met and the period of staying in Sri Lanka have been published in the Extraordinary Gazette No. 2360/24 dated 27.11.2023. (Relevant Gazette may be downloaded from the website www.documents.gov.lk).

Arrangements have been made together with GBS Technology Service & IVS Global Institute to implement the E-Visa system – the online methodology to be introduced in lieu of the ETA (Electronic Travel Authorization) methodology implemented at present and its web link has been mentioned below.

Ekonomiskt krisande Sri Lanka är kanske på väg mot en återhämtning, mycket tack vare turisterna som hittat tillbaka till landet igen.

Under senaste kvartalet lyfte BNP-tillväxten med 4,5 procent jämfört med katastrofsiffran, minus 12,4 procent, föregående år.

Detta efter att antalet utländska besökare fördubblats i december jämfört med föregående år då besökstalen landade på 91.900.

Sri Lankas utsatta situation gjorde att man för nästan exakt ett år sedan begärde och fick ta del av ett räddningspaket på 2,9 miljarder dollar från Internationella valutafonden. Presidenten Ranil Wickremesinghe har sedan dess bland annat höjt skatterna kraftigt för att på det viset bistå statskassan.

Sri Lanka has been named among the top five countries that would grow the most in 2024, according to a report by Travel Off Path, a world-leading indie travel news source.

The list has been compiled by SEO specialist SALT.agency, which has analyzed a huge amount of internet search volume data to create its own prediction.

Describing Sri Lanka, the report states “The island nation of Sri Lanka has long fascinated travelers from around the world thanks to its exotic nature, warm climate, colorful culture, and amazing food.

“Regularly ranking as one of the cheapest locations for digital nomads, Sri Lanka can offer you a slower pace of life by the beach, with plenty of culture and natural wonders to keep you entertained in your downtime.

As per the report, Sri Lanka has recorded strong tourism figures throughout 2023, with visitors from the United States being among the largest groups.

Betalningen på 57 598 kronor för boendet i Spaziosa Casa Molin Livigno gjordes på förhand. Sju dagars skidåkning och god italiensk mat delat på elva – inte så farligt ändå. Och huset med s*x sovrum skulle ge bra med plats åt alla elva.
På plats var det bara ett problem: Spaziosa Casa Molin Livigno fanns inte.
Rickard som samordnat det hela och tio vänner fick återvända hemåt. Och skrev genast en anmälan till ARN, Allmänna reklamationsnämnden.
”Jag kräver hela summan tillbaka som förskottsbetalats efter inrådan av Booking.com. Jag anser också att Booking marknadsföring strider mot lagen om MFL då boendet som vi bokat aldrig har funnits”, skrev Rickard. Glenn Fogel, vd Booking lyder inte under svensk lag…
Och klagade till Bookings, och fick svaret: ”Hej Rickard, Tyvärr kan vi inte hjälpa dig mer i detta ärende. För vidare assistans rekommenderar vi att du kontaktar din bank.Vi har sett avvikande information i dem uppgifter du lämnat, som gör att vi inte kan ta ditt ärende vidare”.
Men ARN skulle väl kunna ge dem rätt? Svaret kom: Avvisas. Med förklaringen:
”Nämnden tillämpar bara svensk lag. Av de allmänna villkoren, som är del i avtalet, framgår att tvisten ska prövas enligt nederländsk lag. Nämnden anser att parterna är bundna av detta. Ärendet kan därför inte prövas (26 § 1 st 3 p förordningen med instruktion för Allmänna reklamationsnämnden)”. Booking.com är registrerade i Amsterdam och lyder alltså under nederländsk lag.
”Jag vill att ni varnar potentiella resenärer om att Booking.com inte har något ansvar för vad som presenterar och marknadsför på deras web. Har skickat in ett klagomål till ARN som tagit upp ärendet men inte kan besluta då Booking lyder under holländsk lag, lite märkligt av ARN kan jag tycka då de marknadsför sig i Sverige och ska följa svensk marknadsföringslag”, skriver Rickard.
Tilläggas kan att Spaziosa Casa Molin Livigno fortfarande finns kvar på söksajter för boende i Livigno.
