2nd prize in Akureyri, Iceland! 🥈

The competition for a new public harbourfront space in Iceland's 'Capital of the North', organised by Hafnarsamlag Norðurlands bs, the City of Akureyri, and Arkitektafélag Íslands, set out to explore the potential of a 1-hectare piece of waterfront that has opened up due to the planned expansion of the port facilities at the city centre.

In response to the brief, we proposed a public harbour village. The plan is grounded in the principles of a pleasant microclimate and flexible spaces that invite new life into the harbour. The structures provide shelter and give identity to the harbour, offering residents and visitors spaces for offices, shopping, restaurants, exhibitions, and bathing. The form, scale and materials of the structures reintroduce the village scale to the Akureyri waterfront, forming the new face of the city from the Eyjafjörður.

Congratulations to Arkþing for taking home the 1st prize!

Stockholm is growing at a rapid rate. The need to accommodate new housing, commercial floor space, and public spaces creates an opportunity to strengthen and redefine the urban fabric of the city. The Örbyleden project is a clear example of such an opportunity. Since the 1970s, Örbyleden has served as a major transportation link in the southwest of Stockholm, acting as a main route for vehicular traffic through the area. Now the chance has come to challenge its role and character, and unlock its potential as an urban catalyst and link between the Stureby and Bandhagen Districts.

Mandaworks, together with our collaborators Kod Arkitekter, has been selected to drive forward a structural plan for Örbyleden. Our team has been tasked with laying the groundwork for the creation of a coherent and high-quality urban environment that will transform the area, with edges that will unify the neighbouring districts.

We will work closely together with the City of Stockholm's planning and development departments through an intensive collaborative process. The work will include study visits, workshops, and hands-on design meetings to develop a clear and implementable vision that tackles the big challenges on-site, including how to connect and complement the existing neighbourhoods, boost the local ecosystem, and facilitate a safe and humane transformation of the motorway.

The densification of existing neighbourhoods is one of the most resource-efficient ways for cities to achieve their social, environmental, and spatial goals. Mandaworks had the pleasure of collaborating with the City of Malmö in their ongoing work to densify the areas of Lorensborg and Bellevuegården in Malmö's west inner city.
Malmö aims to build 1200 new apartments in the area and at the same time strategically reprioritise traffic flows, improve access to public transit and inject some much-needed variation into the area's housing stock. As urban residents, our daily lives are shaped dramatically by the way we move. The work being done in Lorensborg and Bellevuegården brings the areas closer together with their neighbours, creates a more inclusive and open city, and strengthens Malmö's character and mobility network as a whole.

Things are moving in Lake Milada!
Last week we had the pleasure to travel to the Czech Republic for a series of public presentations and workshops together with local and regional municipalities, the public, our client DIAMO, and other key stakeholders.
We greatly enjoyed listening to people's stories, ideas, and expectations for the Lake Milada site. Their insight and input is a significant contribution to the development of our competition proposal as it moves toward becoming reality. A big thank you to everyone that participated in the event, we appreciate your energy, enthusiasm, and ambitions for the future of Lake Milada!🌿

This is the last week of “Sportlov" in Sweden - 4 consecutive weeks when people around the country celebrate with winter sports. 🏂 landscape architect, Jan Adolph, gives the firm’s approach to a dreamy winter urban experience in northern latitudes. ❄️❄️❄️
"Winter in the north is long and beautiful. It's important to consider that in planning and design. Places we create need to function year-round, for passing through and for social gatherings. All architectural qualities such as spatiality, usage and even the habitus and shape of vegetation play an important role in the activation and attractiveness of a design."

Huddinge kommun is revising its current urban development plan to better meet the challenges they face with a longer perspective. The development plan will be available in its entirety on the web and will work with a GIS database.

On behalf of the municipality, Mandaworks produced illustrations to support communication of the revised urban development plan and increase readability on the web. The project also included the production of pdf versions of the land use allocation and consideration map as well as other communication material for consultation. The consultation is ongoing December 3, 2021 - March 3, 2022.

We are delighted to be the city’s selected partner to develop ideas, formulate future strategic decisions, and plan and visualize the growth of the neighbourhood Hallonbergen and Ör in Sundbyberg, a municipality neighbour to the city of Stockholm.

Hallonbergen and Ör form a sizable residential area, built to accommodate the modern family in the 1960s and 70’s. The site is now in need of an update, and has an ambitious development plan aiming to develop over 4000 new houses, schools, sports facilities, shops and restaurants. Parks and public spaces also are rejuvenated to meet the needs of an increased population and contribute to the recreational qualities of the neighborhood.

We are looking forward to working with the municipality crafting the vision of tomorrow closely!

A great article about Nina Lindegaard's work with Kunskapsparken - The Knowledge Park, in Lund in this Month’s Arkitekten.
The question of how we should handle the increasing flows of stormwater in our urban environments is transforming the way we view public space, infrastructure and the relationship between them.
The challenge requires us to zoom out and approach the issue comprehensively to create public infrastructure that is enjoyable and accessible regardless of the season or the quantity of water stored at any given time. As Martin Arfalk mentions in the article, the increasing complexity of our profession is a creative challenge that provides the perfect opportunity to think outside of the box and dream of unexplored solutions.
Mandaworks collaborated with the municipality of Lund in 2015 to create the vision and development concept for the 170-hectare park in Brunnshög.

15/09/2021

Since the beginning of the year, our team has been working closely with Reykjavík Municipality to develop a set of guidelines for a planned residential neighbourhood, New Skerjafjörður.

The document will complement and strengthen the existing detail plan, offering a selection of pioneering solutions to ensure biodiversity, resiliency and high-quality public spaces as the area is to become a model district for vibrant, but sustainable and car-reduced neighbourhoods in Iceland’s capital.

We proposed a 'Gradient Landscape' vision that celebrates the return of the local coastal landscape into the streets, parks, squares and courtyards of the new neighbourhood. The removal of the airport is a unique opportunity to reintroduce the original landscape qualities that dominated the area before its construction: marshlands, coastal wetlands and bushy inland forests. The landscape strategy suggests layers of vegetation and ecosystems that gradually evolve from densely planted areas with trees and shrubbery in the north, to water collecting wetland towards low grasses by the coast, forming a unifying identity for New Skerjafjörður.

Last week The City of Montreal announced their decision to honour the world-famous musician, Oscar Peterson, by naming the central public square of the McGill Avenue redevelopment after him. Located in the heart of the City, the square will serve as a prominent tribute to Mr Peterson who made significant contributions to both music and the City of Montreal. In the announcement speech, Mayor Valérie Plante described the future plans for the space, including immersive art installations inspired by Peterson's work. Oscar Peterson Place sits at the intersection of Ste-Catherine Street and de Maisonneuve Blvd and will be framed by a wrapping public amphitheatre. Fire and water features at the centre of the square give energy and life to the space year-round and generous planting zones invite an evolving landscape character into the urban sequence.

We are developing the design of McGill avenue and Oscar Peterson Place in close collaboration with our colleagues from Civiliti, SNC-Lavalin and the City of Montreal, with the goal to have the square open and functioning in the near future.

Exciting news from the Jiangsu Province - our proposal for Jiangyin Xiakewan Science City has been awarded 1st Prize in the International Competition for Strategic Planning and Conceptual Urban Design organized by the Urban Planning Society of China!

Joining forces with our colleagues from UPDIS, our team developed a comprehensive masterplan vision for the massive 8000-hectare site. The vision is established on the principles of our teams 'resilient framework'. An approach to large scale urban development that is grounded in three essential layers of progressive urban development: The blue, green and experience networks.

Located south of the Yangtze River, and on the banks of Tai Lake, Xiakewan Science City is positioned at a critical intersection of urban and ecological development. The new Science City will be deeply integrated with its local natural environment, protecting, enhancing, and maximising the health of the existing ecosystems in which the new city will be constructed.

This spring MW joined our teammates CADG and VRAP to participate in the international planning and urban design competition for Wanzhou Jiangwan New Town in the Municipality of Chongqing. We are happy to share that we have been awarded 2nd prize for our efforts!

During the two months of intensive work, we investigated the potentials of the massive 6600-hectare site, exploring new ways to establish a resilient urban form between Wanzhou's mountainous landscape and the banks of the Yangtze River.

The 'Water Draping City' concept celebrates Wanzhou's relationship with its high-value riverbank, sloping landscape, and rich cultural context, finding inspiration from the combination of Wanzhou’s traditional mountainside urbanity and the site's existing gorges and ravines. The result is a compact and multi-layered urban structure that embraces the existing valleys and waterways and opens up the Yangtze River Bank with accessible connections and a sequence of exciting riverside moments.

Team MANDAWORKS have been announced winners of the landscape design competition to envision the future of Lake Milada in Northern Czechia!

Our proposal “Living Landscape” was selected through a two-stage selection process, firstly as one of six pre-qualified international teams, and finally from the narrowed pool of three-second phase finalists. The competition was managed and organised by Palivový kombinát Ústí, s.p. and ONplan lab.

Originally the site of a large mine and quarry operation, Lake Milada is undergoing the process of reclamation and renaturalization. In 2020 an international design competition was launched to support the process and envision the future of the lake and 1000-hectare of surrounding landscape.

Our team’s winning proposal "Living Landscape" is organized around three core principles: living nature, living destination, and a living future; The strategies present a clear pathway to reclaim, strengthen, and celebrate the existing landscape while developing novel and exciting ways to experience the Lake and surrounding area.

The competition team is lead by Mandaworks with support from an international, multi-disciplinary group of consultants and experts:
Tim Schnoor (Ekologigruppen), Jan Richtr, Kateřina Zímová, Květoslav Syrový, Linda Kovářová, Pavel Borecký.

Berlin, Hamburg & Bremerhaven: MW in Germany x3!

We have been invited to take part in a participation-driven competition to develop Berlin's Ulap Quarter, a prominent area located next to the Central Station and the Bundestag complex. Together with our teammates Form Follows You and BJP Bläser Jansen Partner we are participating in a series of design workshops that will result in a formal proposal at the end of August. Finally, three teams will be selected to move on to the second stage.

In Hamburg, in a team with ADEPT and Buro Happold, we recently submitted our vision for the extension of Hamburg Central Station. 30 teams were invited to compete to find innovative solutions for reshaping the complex transport hub. The ambition is to create a multicultural urban area that combines high-quality public spaces and active sustainable infrastructure.

In Bremerhaven we envision the future of the transforming harbour through a creative image-making process to demonstrate the potential qualities of a new housing district, bringing vibrancy and specificity to its public spaces and living environments.

During the spring we have been participating in a parallel assignment process to develop a comprehensive vision for the new urban district of Jägersro in Malmö. This May, the final material was presented and the process has moved into the evaluation stage. Sveriges Arkitekter (The Swedish Association of Architects) has just published the material of the selected teams which you can find in the link below!

We were one of three teams that worked simultaneously and in open dialogue with SMT Malmö Exploatering AB, representatives from Malmö stad, and industry experts to develop a proposal for the site. The process and evaluation are being coordinated by the Swedish Association of Architects.

The new Jägersro district will provide 5000 new homes, 1000 workplaces, two primary schools, preschools for 800 children, and a range of cultural and commercial program to support a lively and thriving mixed-use neighbourhood in Malmö's evolving periphery.

We are eagerly awaiting the results alongside our teammates Trivector Traffic and Starkstad, and wishing the best of luck to our colleagues Kanozi Arkitekter and FOJAB!
