”Happy National Sami Day!

Ever since 1992, has February 6th been the day we celebrate our culture and people! This date is in commemoration of the first Sami congress held in 1917, where Northern and Southern Sami people met in Trondheim. I am proud that my great grandpa was with in this first congress.”

Here is a little snapshot from today while feeding some of our reindeer.

We thought it would be a great opportunity to introduce you to Valli, Nils Håkans herding dog, sitting at the forefront. Valli became part of our family this past summer. Now he has grown and even though he is young he has taken to his training and reindeer herding like a champ! He is well on his way to becoming a great partner and reindeer dog like his predecessors before him.

In the Sami culture there has always been a great partnership with dogs and the sami people throughout our history. Even though we use modern vehicles and technology to help herd the reindeer nowadays, dogs still assist quite a bit when moving the reindeer.

Now that the rivers and lakes are completely frozen it is time to move the reindeer from the mountains to have them on better feeding grounds. First the reindeer are gathered together when moving but then put into a corral and separated so that each family can take care of their own.
