We use two different types of skiis on our tours.

One of them is wooden skiis, which was pictured in the last post. These are traditionally used for hunting in the woods, and they are longer and wider so they can carry you easily over deep snow. We use theese when we are skiing in Muddus national park for example.

The other type of skis we use are ”turskidor”, best translated in english as mountain skis – not alpine, not crosscountry. They are more similar to a cross country ski but slightly wider, sturdier and with steel edges, which is very important. It makes it so much easier to travel over different kinds of snow, even very hard snow covered with ice. The binding is also heavier and stronger, and the boots we use are similar to sturdy hikingboots. All our mountain skis are prepared with ”scales”, carved in patterns underneath, so you don´t need to wax or prepare them, and you can also put on skins if you need to climb uphill or drag a heavy pulka. We use these kind of skis on all of our tours in the mountains. It feels like ”walking/hiking on skis” when we go, but if you are a skilled skier, you can also go downhill on these!

We have skis from Åsnes, which is a Norweigan quality brand, but there are more brands of course. The bindings are from Rottefella.

The last day of January, and we are busy here at LA!

We are preparing for the three busiest months of the year for us - February March and April. It is a lovely time, when the winter still is very much winter-ing, but the days slowly getting longer and sunnier. We are prepping skiis, beautiful new wooden skis for our new tour in Muddus. Alex is helping us repairing one of the minivans. And Jokkmokk is starting to buzz since the Winter market is coming up next week! So we are stepping out of the dark midwinter months now, preparing for more light, and more guests, more tours...

Hope you all have a happy weekend!

What do you think of travelling or touring in a group?

Are you the lonely wolf that prefer your own company or the one of a close friend? Or do you enjoy beeing a part of a bigger group?

Our guests have different answers. Some come to meet new people and learn new skills from us, and from them. Some enjoy a bigger group and the social evenings, when we gather together around a meal. Some enjoy smaller groups or maybe would prefer to go by themselves, but doesn´t feel comfortable with that or have the sufficient skills (yet).

For us it is always an interesting experience! Never knowing how the coming week will turn out, but of course always work with creating a good atmosphere for every one of our guests, according to their needs. And after a while, we become a close team, moving together and helping each other out. Some find close friends for future adventures, and go by themselves or tag along on another tour with us. Anyway, we always enjoy a good laugther and seeing the group come together!

The sun is back again!

Mirja took theese stunning photos on her daytour up on Dundret, the mountain in Gällivare. If you are not used to live up north during winter, we cannot explain the absolute joy and lighthearted feeling it is, to finally after many weeks be able to see the sun again. On the top of the mountain it was minus 14 degrees celsius and down by the parkinglot minus 27. That´s life above the arctic circle...

The northern lights during New years eve was something else for sure!

It is not everytime we see them like this, mesmerizing in many different colours. Maybe nature just wanted to say Happy new year with it´s own fireworks?

The search for the northern lights tour is one of our three daytours at Laponia Adventures every winter. We head out on a small hill in the woods just outside Jokkmokk to enjoy an evening in front of the fire and hopefully, catch a glimpse of something like this.

One pair, two pair, thick or thin? We all do the sock-thing different to keep our feet as happy as possible during hikes or skitours.

Here is Mirjas go-to since many years ago, which always work in favour to her feets:

”I use a strict system with ski-socks, camp-socks and sleeping-socks when I´m out on a longer tour. When I´m skiing I have a thin liner and a medium-thick sock of wool on top of it. When we are done skiing for the day, and when I change at the camp or cabin, I will dry my ski-socks the best I can – could be inside a shelljacket or pants, between layers I´m wearing if we are out sleeping in tents. This way they will dry from my bodyheat. Sometimes I put them on top of a hot waterbottle, which also helps drying them up. Then it is time for camp-socks, which I wear during afternoon and evening, until it is time to go to bed – enter sleeping-socks! The camp-socks usually stays pretty dry. The sleeping-socks only lives in my sleeping bag and it is super important to keep them dry and never let them out on adventures. Not even if I need to p*e during the night! I keep it strict, I know, but you never now when the blizzard hits and you might need to stay another night out in a tent. And then you will be very happy for a dry pair of socks”
– Mirja

Which one of our tours would suit you?

We often get the question, whether or not it is a good idea to go on a specific tour with us and what it really takes. So we did a manual! A guide to the different levels of difficulty on our longer tours. Visit our webpage and hopefully it becomes clear, which one you should choose!

The northern lights are big but what about the full moon?

Hands up if you want to take a moment outside the tent, feeling the cold crisp air in your lungs. The moon shines still and the only thing you can hear is the quirking sounds of your footsteps in the snow. Just staying there for a while in a big puffy jacket and admire a world in total stillness, not seen so often.

Laponia Adventures have been a Nature´s Best company for three years now!

Nature´s Best is a quality labeling of companies in Sweden who work with approved eco-tourism.

This week we had a following-up with Anders from The Swedish Nature and Ecotourism association (Naturturismföretagen in swedish) to check that we keep on reaching our goals.

We are very proud to be a part of this, and to be able to offer amazing experiences in the nature while doing our best to take care of it as well.

Garage-sale in Jokkmokk, tomorrow Saturday at 11-15!

Actually we started earlier this week with our annual sale, but we still have some good outdoor stuff left!

Unfortunately we don´t have the possibility to put away stuff for later, or to send things by the post... And we also have limited possibility to answer questions on our social media or mail.

We do it the ”first see, first grab” principle, Welcome by!
