Want to learn about useful knots? Here some info about the Clove Hitch!

This is a handy knot because it can be tied very quickly. On sailboats its usual use is for securing fender whips to a lifeline, stanchion base or toe rail. It can be easily adjusted to raise or lower a fender as needed. The clove hitch can also be used to temporarily secure a dock line to a piling, but be aware that the hitch can unexpectedly work free as the boat moves around at the dock.

Take one full turn around the object the line is being secured to. Then pass the line over itself as you take another turn. Finish the knot by tucking the working end under itself and pull tight.

Want to learn about useful knots? Here some info about the Sheet Bend!

Many sailors use a square knot when tying two lines together, but these often come loose when not under load. The sheet bend is more secure, is easy to untie and works much better when two lines of unequal diameter need to be tied together. As you can see in the illustration, its final form is only slightly different from a square knot, though it is tied quite differently.

Form a bight in the end of one line. Pass the end of the other line through the bight from beneath and around behind both parts of the first line. Finish the knot by passing the working end of the second line under itself, then pull the knot tight.

Want to learn about useful knots? Here some info about the Two Half Hitches!

This knot has a self-explanatory name: one half hitch, followed by another half hitch. It is easy to tie and forms a running noose that can be made larger or smaller. This is the perfect hitch to use to tie a line tightly around an object. Combined with a round turn, it is an excellent way to secure a dock line to a piling. Tying two half hitches on top of a clove hitch is also the best way to keep a fender whip from slipping.

Pass the line twice around the object it is being secured to. Then tie one hitch on top of the turns by passing the working end of the line behind the standing end and pulling it through. Repeat to tie the second hitch. You can tie two half hitches without taking turns first, but they are less secure this way.

Around the world sailing record.

The first around the world sailing record for circumnavigation of the world was Juan Sebastián Elcano and the remaining members of Ferdinand Magellan's crew who completed their journey in 1522. The first solo record was set by Joshua Slocum in the Spray (1898).

The current record holders are IDEC 3, skippered by Francis Joyon in 40 days, 23 hours, 30 minutes and 30 seconds for a crewed journey, and François Gabart with Macif in 42 days, 16 hours, 40 minutes and 35 seconds for a solo journey.

Most races or solo attempts start from Europe. Due to the configuration of the continents, sailing around the world consists of sailing on the Southern Ocean around the Antarctica continent, passing south of Cape Horn, Cape of Good Hope and Cape Leeuwin. Since 1918 the Panama Canal is an option but the locks must be entered and exited using engine power. Large stretches of the canal can be crossed under sail power.

Sailing around the world can be done by two directions: eastward or westward. The dominant winds and currents (outside tropical areas) make the voyage eastwards on the Southern hemisphere faster, most skippers and yachts who race prefer this route. Today, the multihulls perform much better than monohulls and hold the best times. Leisure yacht skippers who prefer tropical seas more often go westward, using the trade winds (and the Panama canal). The Jules Verne Trophy is awarded to the skipper who breaks the previous Jules Verne record, starting from an imaginary line between the Créac'h lighthouse on Ouessant (Ushant) Island, France, and the Lizard Lighthouse, UK.This has not always been the OUTRIGHT record.

The records are homologated by the World Sailing Speed Record Council (WSSRC).

Want to learn about useful knots? Here some info about the Cleat Hitch!

Walk down a dock in any marina and you will see many dock lines improperly secured to cleats. A proper cleat hitch is easy to tie, very effective and it can be released under load without worrying about losing a finger in the process. Any time you make off a line on a cleat, on a dock or on deck, this is the knot to use.

As you gain experience, you will begin to recognize families of knots that are related. For example, two half hitches and the cleat hitch are really clove hitches: the former is tied on the standing end of a line, while the latter is bent around the horns of a cleat. As you practice tying these seven essential knots, you will immediately recognize the look and shape of the knot when made correctly, and more important, will recognize when you have tied it incorrectly. Take one full turn around the base of the cleat, leading the line so that its standing part runs clear of the cleat. Then take a figure-eight turn around first one horn of the cleat, then the other. On the final turn pass the line under itself and pull it tight.

Movie suggestion

All is Lost

All is Lost stars Robert Redford as a solo sailor who meets disastrous circumstances out at sea. It is then that he has tiring battle fighting for his life. Man-and-boat-against-the-sea is a classic theme in sailing movies, and Redford and director J.C. Chandor do just that. The storyline is a simple yet frightening tale of a man on the water.

Sailing employs the wind—acting on sails, wing sails or kites—to propel a craft on the surface of the water (sailing ship, sailboat, windsurfer, or kitesurfer), on ice (iceboat) or on land (land yacht) over a chosen course, which is often part of a larger plan of navigation. A course defined with respect to the true wind direction is called a point of sail.

Film recommendation for sailors...

Maidentrip.

is a documentary about Laura Dekker’s year and a half voyage to be the youngest person ever to sail around the world. Dekker, born in Holland, set sail from Gibraltar in 2010 and made the journey in a year and half, finishing a few months after her 16th birthday. Incredible.

A nice story about a sailing trip

Nisos Kalymnos – Vathi, Greece

We've had some lovely sailing down wind on the Genoa only. 7nm and we arrived at the island of Kalymnos which lies between the islands of Leros an Kos. It is known as the ‘Sponge divers island' and diving for sponges has long been a common occupation on Kalymnos bringing wealth and making it famous throughout the Mediterranean. Early diving was done without equipment (free diving) using a harpoon. Sponges are still harvested individually by hand. In the mid-80s, a disease hit the eastern Mediterranean destroying a great number of sponges and damaging the industry as a result. Today the island faces a lack of sponges due to the outbreak which decimated sponge crops. Sponge Week , an annual celebration, takes place a week after Easter and much has been written, sung and filmed about the legendary courage and recklessness of the sponge divers themselves.
The entrance to Vathi is very narrow and is like that of a Norwegian fjord. To our disappointment two very large and exceptionally noisy tripper boats were tied to the quay, playing very loud music and punters jumping from the boats into the water. My initial reaction was to leave but we were greeted by Captain Minolis who offered to take our lines (no charge) and as soon as we were secure, to our delight the tripper boats left. Captain Minolis, on learning that we would be staying overnight, explained that at around 1am a high speed ferry passes by, outside the harbour, but the wash from it is considerable. It comes into the harbour, bounces off the cliffs and causes a surge that makes it very uncomfortable for those boats tied to the quay. He suggested that we move to the end of the quay where the tripper boats had been, as we would be pointing towards the entrance and it would be better. Sure enough at 1.45am I was woken by Stiletto bouncing around but thankfully within a few minutes all was calm again.

We bought two sponges from Capt Minolis which I have to say are worth the €15 we paid for each of them.

Supper was at Popys Taverna and on leaving, she picked and gave me a huge bunch of basil, simply because I commented on the lovely smell. Yet again, the thoughtfulness and generosity of the Greeks shines through – while all the rest of the world seems to be imploding.
