Footwork is a series of introductory dance workshops organised by the Esplanade. As part of this, we will be holding a pop-up parent-child dance playground, designed for participation between adults and young ones aged 3 to 6 years old. 💃

At Rolypoly Family, we are always working with artists and performers to develop new projects and improve existing ones. Jialing is one of the artists who has been working with us for many years. We’ve been through so much together, as artists and in life, and we are so glad for our many conversations (synchronous and asynchronous 😂) and art projects (also synchronous and asynchronous) together 🫶

This Dec, we got together with some of the performers, teaching artists, and crew we worked with this year. We had a nice time catching up over food and discovering all the ways we knew each other outside of Rolypoly Family! And missed some of the other folks who couldn’t join us.

So much gratitude for the opportunity to work with these good people and we look forward to doing more together next year.🌻

P.S. Shout out to the team at Summer Folks, who delivered wonderful and friendly service. It’s a halal café with indoor and outdoor seating, and provides old school games at each table!

Recently, our co-director Faye had the pleasure of leading Professional Development programmes for some teachers from Pingu’s English International Kindergarten, Myanmar. They joined us at for two of our Creative Movement Teacher Training programmes - Social-Emotional Learning at Every Turn and Let’s Make a Movement Sentence!

The teachers brought their expertise, experience and creativity - it was wonderful being able to hear what they are already doing in their classrooms. Faye was glad to know that the teachers felt inspired from the training and ready to incorporate more social-emotional learning and creative movement in their classrooms.

Is learning Body Safety scary for children? At Rolypoly Family, we think it doesn’t have to be, as long as programmes are quality and age-appropriate with trained facilitators.

Aligning to best-practice criteria, our multi-modal programme involves movement for typically developing, neurodiverse and disabled children.

Last week on Children’s Day, we performed two shows of Gerak ABC and made 2 new words with the audience, “Apbal” and “Abcre” 😝

Thanks to everyone’s quick thinking, the new words have taken on meaning. “Apbal” Is when apple is eaten with sambal. “Abcre” sounded like “up” and “tray” to an audience member. Hence, “Abcre” is when you bring up a tray of nourishment to a loved one who might be ill - so they can makan and minum in bed, and they will know that you sayang them 🫶

Thanks to everyone who came out to the shows and joined in! We were also very happy to have our guests from and . They do wonderful work with children; check them out!

P.S. We perform Gerak ABC! at schools too! For primary schools and some preschools, Gerak ABC! is available for subsidies under the National Arts Council-Arts Education Program. ;)

When we dance and teach in schools and children spaces, we love looking out for the books on their shelves, especially the ones that relate to movement and our bodies.

The Family Edition of Body Smarts Through Movement Arts is back this November!

Body Smarts Through Movement Arts is a programme that equips children and parents or caregivers with information and skills about body safety, respect and consent, through age-appropriate movement exercises, games and song.

This iteration of Body Smarts is led by Faye Lim (co-director of Rolypoly Family).

Date & time: 9 Nov, Saturday, 3-4.30pm
Venue: Mindful Space, near Newton MRT
Fee: $65 per adult-child pair, $18 for additional family member .
For ages 3-6 with an adult accompanied.

[TWO CHILDREN'S DAY SHOWS]

We are so glad to be showing Gerak ABC at The Artground on Children's Day, Friday October 4th! It's an English-Malay bilingual dance-theatre performance made in collaboration with theatre performer and drama educator Dalifah Shahril.

The performance is fun-filled, with delightful choreography, tender moments, and topsy-turvy silliness. Suitable for children and families who know English, Malay or both.

Our Rolypoly Junior Dance Club is open for enrollment for 7 - 10 year olds!
For 10 Mondays starting 23 September 2024, children in the dance club will dance and play movement games together, learning technical and creative dance skills, all while developing their sense of body ownership, creative confidence, and social-emotional skills. The term culminates in a casual studio performance featuring the children’s solo dances, improvised and choreographed by themselves!
