Rolypoly Family

Rolypoly Family Dance, play, body safety! Our lessons and projects are age-appropriate, context-informed and culturally-aware. Rolypoly Family is a division of Derring-Do Dance.

Rolypoly Family is dedicated to honouring children’s creative genius while supporting the artistic and socio-emotional learning of diverse young children, their families and their communities. Led by dance artists Bernice Lee and Faye Lim, we produce delightful dance experiences, such as performances, interdisciplinary projects, workshops and classes, from our artists’ intuitive choreographic and

movement practices. Our Body Smarts Through Movement Arts programme teaches body safety and sexuality education topics to diverse communities, using a multi-modal approach that includes movement, art, craft and discussion. We also provide training & consulting for artists, educators and organisations who want to build healthier, safer and/or more creative spaces for diverse children. Our workshops and consulting services can help expand capacities, bridge gaps or tackle specific problems in your projects, communities or workplaces. Our name is a statement of our beliefs – that families come in all shapes and sizes, that kinship can grow through creative and physical play (yes, rolling!), and that rhyming is as fun in language as in dance. We partner with groups and organisations across Singapore, such as community groups, social service organisations, arts groups and institutions, and government agencies. Our first Member Engagement Event of the year is in collaboration with Esplanade March On! 👀 for deets!

𝗦𝗵𝗮𝗹𝗹 𝗪𝗲 𝗣𝗹𝗮𝘆 𝗧𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝗪𝗮𝘆?
How do we think about child-centered play, and how does body safety factor within it?

In this interactive sharing Co-Led by Faye Lim and Chew Shaw En, participants will engage in activities that activate the space, consider its permissibility, and reflect on the boundaries both adult and child bring into play. Based on their experiences working with children through the arts, Faye and Shaw will share within the contexts of their work with children in their respective communities, bringing in elements of consent, body safety and play.

🗓️: 8 March, Saturday, 7-10pm
📍: Esplanade Rehearsal Studio, L6

Last December, we got to meet Ti**le Friend by at the helpline’s 40th Anniversary Event. The exhibition was a chance to reflect on the joys and challenges we might face in being trusted adults, and it offered insights and ideas for how to do better.

We learnt that it was not all that rare for children to call in with safety problems. As many of you are parents or adults in close proximity with children, we wanted to share some of the information we gleaned from the interactive exhibit about children’s mental health in Singapore.

Thank you for joining us at our Pop-up Dance Playgroup at the Esplanade on 19 Jan!

We were inspired by the ongoing monsoon season to explore nature’s themes of growth and renewal, rolling and adapting our bodies and minds to the changing weather patterns.

Lunar New Year is also known as the “Spring Festival”, celebrating the turn of Winter into Spring.

This New Year, we hope our overcast skies, resembling wintry scenes elsewhere, also forecasts upcoming growth and renewal for all!

At Rolypoly Family, we are always working with artists and performers to develop new projects and improve existing ones. Jialing is one of the artists who has been working with us for many years. We’ve been through so much together, as artists and in life, and we are so glad for our many conversations (synchronous and asynchronous 😂) and art projects (also synchronous and asynchronous) together 🫶

This Dec, we got together with some of the performers, teaching artists, and crew we worked with this year. We had a nice time catching up over food and discovering all the ways we knew each other outside of Rolypoly Family! And missed some of the other folks who couldn’t join us.

So much gratitude for the opportunity to work with these good people and we look forward to doing more together next year.🌻

P.S. Shout out to the team at Summer Folks, who delivered wonderful and friendly service. It’s a halal café with indoor and outdoor seating, and provides old school games at each table!

Recently, our co-director Faye had the pleasure of leading Professional Development programmes for some teachers from Pingu’s English International Kindergarten, Myanmar. They joined us at for two of our Creative Movement Teacher Training programmes - Social-Emotional Learning at Every Turn and Let’s Make a Movement Sentence!

The teachers brought their expertise, experience and creativity - it was wonderful being able to hear what they are already doing in their classrooms. Faye was glad to know that the teachers felt inspired from the training and ready to incorporate more social-emotional learning and creative movement in their classrooms.

Is learning Body Safety scary for children? At Rolypoly Family, we think it doesn’t have to be, as long as programmes are quality and age-appropriate with trained facilitators.

Aligning to best-practice criteria, our multi-modal programme involves movement for typically developing, neurodiverse and disabled children.

Join us this Saturday, 9 Nov, 3-4.30pm!

Last week on Children’s Day, we performed two shows of Gerak ABC and made 2 new words with the audience, “Apbal” and “Abcre” 😝

Thanks to everyone’s quick thinking, the new words have taken on meaning. “Apbal” Is when apple is eaten with sambal. “Abcre” sounded like “up” and “tray” to an audience member. Hence, “Abcre” is when you bring up a tray of nourishment to a loved one who might be ill - so they can makan and minum in bed, and they will know that you sayang them 🫶

Thanks to everyone who came out to the shows and joined in! We were also very happy to have our guests from and . They do wonderful work with children; check them out!

P.S. We perform Gerak ABC! at schools too! For primary schools and some preschools, Gerak ABC! is available for subsidies under the National Arts Council-Arts Education Program. ;)

Happy Children’s Day! We hope that today and every day, we remember the joy of life, the rights of children, and the wonder of childhood.

When we dance and teach in schools and children spaces, we love looking out for the books on their shelves, especially the ones that relate to movement and our bodies.

This book was certainly feet-ing 😝How our feet are shaped and used affect our movement, posture and alignment. Notice your feet today 👣🐾
