Sorry for the late post.

Mar 14-15, 2025 - Uocho Shokuhin Company Incentive Trip to Singapore

I had the honour of hosting star employees from Uocho Shokuhin, a company based in Hakodate, on their incentive trip to Singapore. We visited the rich Peranakan enclave in Katong Joo Chiat, and studied the colourful aspects of the culture. I brought them to visit Ms. Paulin Khoo, who runs an eccentric coffee joint out of her own kitchen, and Cat Socrates where everyone had fun admiring the antics of Zoo-zoo, the resident feline. We enjoyed lunch at The Coconut Club Siglap. Thanks to the very friendly restaurant manager Danny for accommodating us! In the afternoon, we ventured to Kampong Gelam for a free and easy time and I brought them to visit the Atlas Bar, one of the top 50 bars in the world. The day ended with a walk along the Singapore river, and a visit to Merlion Park, where the icon of Singapore stands. The next evening, I assisted in the hosting of the annual dinner for Uocho Shokuhin employees together with some of the award winners of the Singapore Tourism Awards.

株式会社魚長食品の社員旅行を担当しました。全会社100名以上の社員から選ばれた10名の優秀な社員はシンガポールに来ました。朝ペラナカン文化が豊富なカトンジョーチャット地区で散策して、特別なコーヒーショップに訪れました。お昼はココナッツクラブで、ごちそうしました。午後、カンポングラムで買い物をし、世界中トップ50のバーの一つのアトラスバーを訪れました。その後、シンガポール川を散策しながら、シンガポールの始まりや歴史、今までの発展をしょうかいして、マーライオンパークでたくさん面白い写真を撮ってツアーが終了しました。翌日の夕方、社員たちの夕食食事会の司会として手伝って、他何人のシンガポールツーリズムアワード受賞者たちと共に楽しくできました。

Mar 10, 2025 - Lim's Tours x JAS Little India Tour

In the fifth installment of this series, participants were introduced to the cultures of India, including the festivals, food, clothing, religion and history.

Participants were particularly amazed at how there used to be a race course at little India and were excited to take a picture at the mural with the race horses.

They were glad to hear the stories of the place which allowed them to enjoy the area more than usual as they were able to understand the significance of the Indian culture.

3月10日 - わくわく！リトルインディア街歩き

私の講座の５回目は、リトルインディアです！参加者たちはインドの料理や祭り、服装、宗教、歴史などを習いました。特に、皆さんがリトルインディアに昔競馬場があったことを知り、ビックリしました。競馬の壁画と写真を撮ってうれしかったようです。自分で歩いたよりエリアのことが深く分かるから、このツアーに高評価をしてくださいました。

Lim's Tours x JAS Historical Sites and Materials Department

Had the honour of leading a 3-hour walking tour around fort canning park, a place steeped in history, for the members of the Historical Sites and Materials Department of the Japanese Association Singapore, which is made up of teachers from the 3 Japanese schools in Singapore as well as esteemed individuals in the Japanese community.

Not only did we visit the remains of the fort, we also talked about the ideas behind the building of the fort and the historical events that occurred there. The guests also learned about some of the significant trees and spices on the hill and the maritime features used by people in the past. The tour ended with a visit to the tombstone of Emily Louisa Ottoson, the daughter of the first Japanese resident in Singapore, whose exciting adventures are widely known by the Japanese now.

2月22日　日本人会史蹟資料部フォートカニングツアー

いいお天気の中、史蹟資料部のメンバーが約3時間のフォートカニングツアーに参加しました。1月11日の講座で話したことを礎に、砦の見物をしながら、砦の使い方や兵士の戦略、砦で行ったことなどを紹介しました。そして、フォートカニングである様々な樹木やお花、スパイス、海事のために使ったものも紹介しました。ツアーの最後に、シンガポールに初日本人居住者の山本音吉さんの娘エミリー・ルイザ・オットソンのお墓に訪れました。ツアーのあと、メンバーたちと一緒に昼食をして、いい交流ができて、とてもよかったです。

Lim's Tours x JAS: Botanic Gardens Tanglin Core

The hot weather did not dampen the spirits of the participants as we took a 2 hour stroll in the Tanglin Core area of the Singapore Botanic Gardens, the oldest part preserved for its heritage. We had a 30 minute stopover at The Halia and enjoyed its speciality ginger drinks. Overall, it was a fun and leisurely stroll for everyone.

日本人会のシンガポールレクチャー&ツアー講座の第４回は、2月17日と24日に行いました。

今回のテーマは「シンガポール植物園を巡る:自然と歴史の魅力を学ぶ」です。

シンガポールボタニックガーデンの最も古くてヘリテージがいっぱいあるタングリンコアエリアに訪れて、2時間で散策しました。天気は少し暑いですが、散歩しながらいろいろな植物を見ったり、匂ったり、学んだりして楽しく過ごしました。

途中もザハリアという生姜専門のレストランで、30分ほど休憩をし、いろいろな特製ドリンクを楽しみました。

最後に行きたかったヘリテージギャラリーが本日閉館となり残念ですが、その代わりにお土産ショップでゆっくり見ることができて、よかったです。

今後もボタニックガーデンの他のエリアを案内しますので、またご参加くださいね。よろしくお願い致します。

Feb 2 - It's the Istana Open House once again! In collaboration with the President's Office, NParks runs the Istana Heritage Tour every open house. As a volunteer for NParks, I am running the tours in Japanese for our Japanese community, both locals, PRs and foreigners. Everyone had fun learning about the history of the Istana as well as a huge variety of plants and fruits found in the Istana.

2月2日　毎度のイスタナオーペンハウスに、国立公園局は大統領事務局と協力して、イスタナヘリテージツアーを開催します。私もボランティアガイドとしてそういうツアーを手伝います。今回も２回目日本人のローカルやPRなどのコミュニティのため、日本語ツアーを案内しました。皆さんはイスタナの歴史や植物のことをたくさん学ぶことができて、楽しかったです。

Jan 20 & 27: Chinese New Year in Chinatown

The second instalment of the Singapore Lecture and Tour Series focused on learning about the lives of early Chinese migrants and the traditional customs of Chinese New Year in Singapore.

Participants had fun learning about where the migrants came from, what jobs they did, what they did first when they first arrived through carefully planned interesting activities. Then they set off on a tour to Telok Ayer and Kreta Ayer, learning about the history of Thian Hock Keng Temple, ACS school, Ann Siang Hill, Club Street, Sago Street, Lai Chun Yuen, Coolie Quarters and O***m Den. The tour ended at Chinatown Heritage Centre where participants are free to explore the exhibits on their own.

「チャイニーズニューイヤー直前のチャイナタウン」

シンガポールレクチャー&ツアーの第２回は、1800年代の中国からの移民たちの生活やチャイニーズニューイヤーの伝統の学習です。面白い活動を通って、移民たちはどこから来たか、来てから最初に何をしたか、どんなお仕事をされたか、等などの知識を学習しました。そして翌週にテロックアエとクレタアエに行って見物しました。

Today, I had the pleasure of meeting Cedric who flew all the way here from Portland, Oregon. He had always admired the cityscape of Singapore and had longed to be here and today he fulfilled that dream.

He booked an 8-hour private tour with me and I picked him up from the airport. We went to Kampong Gelam to experience the Malay culture at Bussorah Street, look at the majestic Masjid Sultan, and the artsy Haji Lane. Then we walked over to Parkview Square, or locally known as the Gotham building. We visited Atlas Bar and I shared stories of the sculptures and the geomancy behind them. Next, we went to Marina Bay Sands Skypark, and Marina Bay Sands Shoppes and he got the chance to witness a lion dance. We headed to Gardens By The Bay and River Hongbao, an event held only during the Lunar New Year Period.

After lunching at Lau Pa Sat, we walked over to Chinatown and shopped for souvenirs together. We also visited Buddha Tooth Relic Temple to witness the prayers of the devotees, before heading to the Civic District, where we visited the National Gallery, Victoria Concert and Memorial Hall and Fullerton Hotel. We walked over to the Merlion Park and had a drink at Brewerks before calling it a day and heading back to the airport.

It was a memorable day spending time with Cedric. I was glad it didn't rain much, and the strong wind made the humidity a lot more bearable for him, which was great.

In his review for me, he said,

"Si Wei was absolutely incredible in every way possible. For someone who has never been in this part of the world, he made me feel welcome and interested in every aspect of the culture. Even though my visit was limited to a few hours I was able to experience multiple areas of the city. With his expansive knowledge of the country, I was able to learn much more than I could have imagined if I were alone. If anyone is in need of a guide, he is the perfect companion to show you around. I thank him dearly and am looking forward to returning soon."

Aww that's so sweet. That's why I love my job. I wish him the best for his travels and for his endeavours back home.

Lim's Tours x JAS

This year, I have the pleasure of collaborating with the Japanese Association Singapore (JAS) on providing cultural courses and tours to its members.

These pictures show the inaugural lessons, where participants first take part in fun activities to learn about Sang Nila Utama, the Merlion and Fort Canning on Jan 6, and then attend a 3-hour walking tour at Fort Canning a week later on Jan 13.

Everyone had fun and the program was very well-received.

今年シンガポール日本人会とコラボーレーションができてとても光栄です。毎月シンガポール文化講座とツアーを提供しています。

これらの写真はこの講座の一回目です。「シンガポールの始まり」というテーマで、1月6日に楽しい活動を通して、サンニラウタマの話しやマーライオンの豆知識を教えて、そして、13日にフォートカニングで３時間のウォーキングツアーを開催しました。

参加者たちは皆楽しくできて、そしていい評価もいただきました。

Jan 19 - First tour of the new year! We visited the Tanglin Core of the Singapore Botanic Gardens, the area that was first established when Botanic Gardens started. Although the weather wasn't very good, everyone had fun learning about plants, animals and history.

Dec 29 - The final tour for the year! Virgin tour to the marine park on Big Sister's Island. The children enjoyed exploring the living organisms and their little swim in the lagoon. In this tour, I shared the habitat enhancement features on the island as well as the coral conservation program. And look, we spotted a caterpillar of the pale brown hawk moth!

2024年12月29日　シスターズアイランドマリンパークツアー
年内最後のツアーですが、シスターズアイランドへ行くのは初めてのツアーです。子供たちはいろんな生物を探求するのは、浅瀬で泳ぐのもすごく楽しんでいました。ツアーで、生物たちを助けるための人工的な生息地を紹介して、そして珊瑚の保護プログラムも説明しました。ほら！青虫も発見！

Dec 27 - Hosted two groups of ladies from Busan Women's University at the Silicon Valley of Asia Tour. Although the tour was in English, I introduced myself in Korean to much surprise. Throughout the tour, I added Korean phrases here and there to spice it up. They thoroughly enjoyed the tour and gave me a present - a wireless charger with a traditional Korean design.

Together with 8 guests, we embarked on a short walking tour to unravel the secrets of Tiong Bahru, in terms of its history, legacy, architecture, food, art and religion.

20 Oct 2024 - Istana Open House Heritage Tour
As an Istana Nparks volunteer heritage guide, I collaborated with Nparks and the President's Office and led the first ever heritage tour in Japanese for our foreign guests! It was a fun-filled 90-minute walk around the grounds of the Istana, sharing stories of our past leaders in the Istana as well as the flora and fauna of our presidential palace.

自分はイスタナヘリテージのボランティアガイドなので、この度国立公園局と大統領事務所とコラボレーションして、史上初日本語ヘリテージツアーをしました。15名の日本人の方々が参加していただきました。敷地内楽しく散歩しながら、宮殿のお話しをしたり、見てた植物や動物も紹介したり、充実な90分でした。

A walking tour where l told stories of how the old Katong estates are like and why part of it was named after Mr. Chew Joo Chiat. I also brought my guests to discover hidden food jems there and explore art murals. Lastly, I shared about the intricacies of the Peranakan culture and Hinduism religion.

カトン地方の昔の様子と話しがメインのウォーキングツアー。なぜ一部の住宅がジョーチャットさんの名前に付けられた物語をし、伝統的な食べ物の試食もでき、きれいな壁画も見ました。最後に、ペラナカン文化とヒンドゥ教も体験しました。
