➤ Kyoto is a Japanese city on the island of Honshu. Its population reaches one and a half million people. Formerly the capital of imperial Japan, it is now the seat of the Kyoto Prefecture, which, together with the cities of Osaka and Kobe, forms the Osaka-Kobe-Kyoto urbanized region. In 1994, UNESCO declared the cities of Kyoto, Ujja and Ocu a World Heritage Site. Kyoto is located in the eastern part of the Tamba Highlands, in a valley that is part of the Jamasiro Basin. It is bordered by Mount Higasijama, Kitajama and Mount Nisijama at an altitude of 1000 meters above sea level. Due to the location of the pool, summers are humid and warm, while the plot is cold. The basin is crossed by three rivers, the Uyghava in the south, the Kacuragava in the west and the Kamogava in the east. The city occupies 17.9% of the prefecture and about 827.9 km². Kyoto has a humid subtropical climate, summers are hot and humid, winters are relatively cold, and snowfall often occurs. The rainy season (梅雨, cuju) begins in mid-June and lasts until the end of July. In the central areas of Japan, where Kyoto is located, typhoons are common in September and October.
