You might be aware that you can be a sponsor, but do you know what else you are required to know as a sponsor? Essentially, you must pass the income test. Earlier this week, we shared about the eligibility and streams for the Global Talent Independent (GTI) program. You must be wondering about the application process, fret not, we are here to help.
As part of the application, you will need to be endorsed by a nominator who has a national reputation in the same field as you and is either:
- an eligible Australian citizen or permanent resident
- eligible New Zealand citizen
- an Australian organisation with a national reputation in relation to your area of talent.

You will then lodge for an Expression of Interest (EOI) for consideration under the Global Talent Independent Program. If you meet the eligibility criteria, you will be provided with a unique identifier number (UIN) which provides priority processing, which also means that you are now invited to apply for the visa. You will be given 60 days to make the application. The processing times will vary for both streams.

Earlier this week, we shared about Australia’s most popular visa application pathway for skilled workers - The General Skilled Migration program. The entire application is rather simple.
1. Upon meeting a minimum point score of 65 in the points based system and confirming that your occupation is indeed included under the list of skilled occupations, you are eligible to apply.

Employer Nomination Scheme Visa (Subclass 186) requires you to complete a skills test and be nominated by an approved Australian employer. Some of the benefits are working and living in Australia indefinitely, having an opportunity to study in Australia, enrol in the Medicare program, apply for Australian citizenship and be able to sponsor relatives for permanent residence.

Temporary Skill Shortage (TSS) visa is a temporary visa which permits the holder to live in Australia, while working full-time for the sponsoring employer, in the nominated position. You may include dependents in your application.

It comes with two streams: (1) short-term stream and (2)medium-term stream. Applicants with occupations on the Short-Term Skilled Occupations List (STSOL) are eligible for visas of up to two years (renewable once, for a further two years), whilst those on the Medium and Long-Term Strategic Skills List (MLTSSL) can apply for up to four years, with eligibility for permanent residency after three years.

While the Partner visa program does not currently have any English language requirements, the upcoming Partner visa reforms set to come into effect in or around November 2021 will require visa applicants and their permanent resident sponsors to provide evidence of a functional level of English or to demonstrate that they have made reasonable efforts to learn English at the time of the permanent Partner visa stage. Reasonable efforts are intended to include completion of 500 hours of free English language classes through the Adult Migration English Program (AMEP). The requirements will apply to passport holders from countries other than Australia, Canada, Ireland, New Zealand, the United Kingdom and the United States.
