Today, August 7th, 2024, is a special day for the Mountaineering village of Dovje - Mojstrana, as both the village and the Municipality of Kranjska Gora celebrate a municipal holiday dedicated to the installation of Aljažev Tower, a Slovenian symbol (today a cultural monument of national importance) on top of Triglav , back in 1895. In 1895, Jakob Aljaž bought land at the top of Triglav, hired the master carpenter Anton Belac and with his help erected a tower on the highest Slovenian mountain with the inscription “Aljažev stolp”, which was the first Slovenian inscription on Triglav and its surroundings.
On August 10, 1896, just one year after the pastor, patriot and visionary in mountaineering, Jakob Aljaž, erected a tower on the top of Triglav and thus symbolically sealed the Slovenian territory, a year later he had the first Slovenian hut built below Triglav and named it Triglavski dom on Kredarica (2515m). He did this purely out of patriotism, because when the tower was being built a year earlier, he was refused an overnight stay in Dežman's hut (then belonging to the DÖAV) by the caretaker, and he wanted Slovenes to get their own cottage as well.
At the opening, 70 mountaineers climbed to the top of Triglav. Initially, the hut was only open in the summer months, it was opened in the first days of July, and visitors were offered various preserves, wine, beer, coffee, tea and liquor. With his activities, Jakob Aljaž disturbed the German mountain public, who tried to nullify his work with lawsuits, which they failed to do, because the priest from Dovje won all six lawsuits related to his constructions in and around Triglav, including the one that touched the land , on which the cottage on Kredarica was located.
Today, in the Mountaineering village of Dovje - Mojstrana, we are extremely proud of the magnificent works of Aljaž and we sincerely congratulate all the locals as well as visitors of the Mountaineering village of Dovje - Mojstrana on the holiday and we want to pay our respects to our patriot and look up together with him at our “holy mountain” Triglav.
