Hidden behind a long Alpine valley and a gorge with plummeting waterfalls and a winding narrow road going through rock-carved tunnels, is the high and steep eastern part of the Košuta massif. Measuring ten kilometers in length, Košuta is the longest mountain in Slovenia that boasts twelve peaks of over 2K meters. If the western side of the massif is popular with hikers due to its accessibility and relatively easy trails, among frequently visited peaks being Mt. An amazing sunrise from Galetovec 😍😍 The sun was just coming out from behind the mountains, while the birds were happily singing their tunes. If you look closely, you’ll also notice lake Bled behind the hills. Gorgeous!

Zadnjica is yet another stunning glacial valley in the Soča Valley. Located between the Trenta Valley and the west walls of Triglav, the highest mountain of Slovenia, it serves as a starting point for many long but gorgeous hikes and climbs in the Slovenian mountains. You may climb anything from the most beautiful mountain in Slovenia, Bovški Gamsovec, a true alpine giant Mt. Razor, Triglav on a via Ferrata, or hike to the seven Triglav Lakes. You may also want to only take an easy hike along the Zadnjica River and up the valley, and gasp in awe at the towering rocky peaks of the Julian Alps like I did 😍😍😍Where to stay when in the Soča Valley? There are four hotels in Bovec and many private accommodations, but I always opt to stay in Skok Apartments, a small house with several rooms and an outdoor store Alpska šola Bovec. The owners are super friendly, they have a spacious parking lot in front of the house, while the apartments are well equipped and clean, and the view from the balcony is just beautiful. If you want to try out rafting and canyoning, they also organise water activities on the Soča River!

Leper lilies in Ljubljana Marsh
Tucked away at the southern end of Ljubljana and expanding to the first foothills of the mountains in the south, the Ljubljana Marsh covers 163 square kilometers or about one percent of the country and as such qualifies as Slovenia’s largest wetland. Its marshy flats are interwoven with an endless labyrinth of meadows, fields, ditches, and paths, while being also well-known for their booming wildlife and diverse plants. Among others, they house 89 species of butterflies, 48 species of dragonflies, and over 100 species of birds, some of them considered endangered worldwide, while as much as half of Slovenian bird population picks this place to hatch.
Sometime between the end of winter and beginning of spring the ancient hay meadows of the wetlands are also the spot to see blooming leper lilies, beautiful bell-shaped flowers of a somewhat reddish-purple color. In fact, leper lilies are the first to adorn the still colorless meadows.

Merry Christmas my dearest co-hikers, co-climbers and co-adventurers by heart. This has been yet another incredible year of our journey in the mountains and I hope you have enjoyed it as much as me / us. I’m wishing you many happy moments anywhere you may be. But more than that, I’m wishing you to see the little things around you. The nature has so much to give and being able to see all that is the biggest gift anyone can get.
