Komárno is situated at the confluence of the rivers Danube and Vah.
Its territory has been inhabited sistematically since the Bronze age .
First Celts lived here and then the Romans.
The Romans were reasonable people so they quickly discovered abilities of the Danube as a natural defence works for the eastern frontier of the Roman Empire.
In the first century AD the Roman Empire stretched to the River Danube and on its border fortifications were set up. The camp of Legio I Adiutrix was built .The four great legionary camps of the limes, which defended the ancient Roman province of Pannonia from the north, were situated in the area,
During its long history, Brigetio had been one of the most important ports of the Roman Danube fleet, it was the place from which Marcus Aurelius directed his legions and from which Constantius II also started a victorious campaign in 358 AD, and it is where Emperor Valentinian I died in 375 AD.
You can still see the remains of setlement Brigetio on the right bank of the Danube and the military camp Celementia on the left bank.
