Did you know that there are currently just over 750 000 Slovaks living in the USA?

the largest number of people with Slovak ancestry live in the state of Pennsylvania.

According to historical records, as many as 100 000 Slovaks arrived to Pittsburgh in the 1890s, mainly because the area reminded them of their native land, but also to work in the local coal mines.

The Slovak Studies Program is taught at the local University of Pittsburgh, which is attended by 27,000 students. People here learn about Slovak culture and traditions, and in November they also organise the Slovak Heritage Festival, where visitors can taste our typical dishes, listen to folklore and more.

On the edge of a small cemetery situated on a hill above the village of Háj near the Zadiel valley, there stands a monumental sculpture of a shot angel with a wing torn-off. This is a prop that has been left here after filming the famous Hollywood blockbuster Behind the Enemy Lines (2001).

The main role in the film was played by actors Owen Wilson and Gene Hackman. The film, with a budget of 40 million US dollars, was also shot in Slovakia and the aforementioned props were eventually donated to the village of Háj. After the filming was finished, it was transported by helicopter to the local cemetery, to the so-called Angel's Way.

The statue is 15 meters high and is made of polystyrene, which is coated with laminate. The statue stands at the end of the so-called "Angel Road", which allegedly leads over the village Háj.

Spiš Castle is one of the Slovakia’s most famous castle ruin and is now among the largest castle complexes on the continent, covering over 4 hectares.

Whilst a first incarnation Spis Castle was begun in the 12th century, this collapsed due to tectonic shifts. It was thus in the early 13th century that the Spis Castle we see today has its roots, built in anticipation of Mongol incursions.

The region of Gemer and Tokaj are the pearls of tourism in Slovakia. Not very well known commercially so far, these areas do not hide their enormous potential.

As an incoming subject in cooperation with a foreign partner, it will be my pleasure to provide operational services for foreign travel entities who would consider to add Slovakia to their itinerary map.

Let´s unlock the full potential of tourism in Slovakia. 🤜

It 1970 the World Nordic Ski Championships were held in the High Tatras. At that time there was a large-scale construction and with it the launch of the new cog railway and new Tatra trams. The electric cog railway started running on February 12, 1970.

The track is 5 km long and overcomes a high climb. It climbs from an altitude of 900 m above sea level, from the station Štrba up to 1350 m above sea level to Štrbské pleso.

The original rolling stock consisted of 3 sets, which were manufactured in the Brown, Boveri and Winterthur factories in Baden, Switzerland, where they have many years of experience with cogwheels.

The Tatra cogwheel ran for 50 years and unfortunately that was the limit of its service life. In addition, spare parts could no longer be found, so the decision was made to completely reconstruct it.

As part of the complete modernisation, everything was replaced, including the new gearboxes. 5 new hybrid vehicles came to the Tatras to complement the Tatra trams. The new sets were again supplied by the Swiss. The supplier is Stadler.

The tomb of the leader of the last anti-Habsburg uprising was built after the permission to transport the remains of Ferenc II. Rákóczi and his companions from Turkey, which was issued by Emperor Franz Joseph. In 1906, the remains of his mother Helena Zrínská, son Joseph, aide-de-camp Berczény, General Esterházy and court master Šibrik were also placed there.

The Shield Bearer is the beautiful statue at the entrance to Ferenc Rákóczi’s II. crypt with his coat of arms .

The St.Elisabeth cathedral and the crypt are among the most visited cultural monuments in Košice. More than 20 000 tourists visit the crypt every year.

Cross-country skiing belongs to winter in the High Tatras as much as downhill skiing or ski mountaineering. There are excellent cross-country skiing trails in each of the Tatra villages with a total length of more than 64 km.

The largest cross-country skiing area in the High Tatras is Štrbské Pleso. It offers 7 professionally groomed cross-country skiing circuits ranging in length from 0.5 to 5 km and professional and amateur races are organized here. The SNOW cross-country skiing area can be used during the whole winter season thanks to artificial snow. ❄️
