Did you know that there are currently just over 750 000 Slovaks living in the USA?

the largest number of people with Slovak ancestry live in the state of Pennsylvania.

According to historical records, as many as 100 000 Slovaks arrived to Pittsburgh in the 1890s, mainly because the area reminded them of their native land, but also to work in the local coal mines.

The Slovak Studies Program is taught at the local University of Pittsburgh, which is attended by 27,000 students. People here learn about Slovak culture and traditions, and in November they also organise the Slovak Heritage Festival, where visitors can taste our typical dishes, listen to folklore and more.

On the edge of a small cemetery situated on a hill above the village of Háj near the Zadiel valley, there stands a monumental sculpture of a shot angel with a wing torn-off. This is a prop that has been left here after filming the famous Hollywood blockbuster Behind the Enemy Lines (2001).

The main role in the film was played by actors Owen Wilson and Gene Hackman. The film, with a budget of 40 million US dollars, was also shot in Slovakia and the aforementioned props were eventually donated to the village of Háj. After the filming was finished, it was transported by helicopter to the local cemetery, to the so-called Angel's Way.

The statue is 15 meters high and is made of polystyrene, which is coated with laminate. The statue stands at the end of the so-called "Angel Road", which allegedly leads over the village Háj.

Spiš Castle is one of the Slovakia’s most famous castle ruin and is now among the largest castle complexes on the continent, covering over 4 hectares.

Whilst a first incarnation Spis Castle was begun in the 12th century, this collapsed due to tectonic shifts. It was thus in the early 13th century that the Spis Castle we see today has its roots, built in anticipation of Mongol incursions.

It 1970 the World Nordic Ski Championships were held in the High Tatras. At that time there was a large-scale construction and with it the launch of the new cog railway and new Tatra trams. The electric cog railway started running on February 12, 1970.

The track is 5 km long and overcomes a high climb. It climbs from an altitude of 900 m above sea level, from the station Štrba up to 1350 m above sea level to Štrbské pleso.

The original rolling stock consisted of 3 sets, which were manufactured in the Brown, Boveri and Winterthur factories in Baden, Switzerland, where they have many years of experience with cogwheels.

The Tatra cogwheel ran for 50 years and unfortunately that was the limit of its service life. In addition, spare parts could no longer be found, so the decision was made to completely reconstruct it.

As part of the complete modernisation, everything was replaced, including the new gearboxes. 5 new hybrid vehicles came to the Tatras to complement the Tatra trams. The new sets were again supplied by the Swiss. The supplier is Stadler.

The tomb of the leader of the last anti-Habsburg uprising was built after the permission to transport the remains of Ferenc II. Rákóczi and his companions from Turkey, which was issued by Emperor Franz Joseph. In 1906, the remains of his mother Helena Zrínská, son Joseph, aide-de-camp Berczény, General Esterházy and court master Šibrik were also placed there.

The Shield Bearer is the beautiful statue at the entrance to Ferenc Rákóczi’s II. crypt with his coat of arms .

The St.Elisabeth cathedral and the crypt are among the most visited cultural monuments in Košice. More than 20 000 tourists visit the crypt every year.

Beautiful historical palace (National Cultural Monument) in the centre of Košice built in neo-Gothic style. In fact, it is a bourgeois villa with a garden and two large apartments.

It catches the eye of every visitor to Košice and was built between 1899 and 1903 in memory of King Matthias Corvinus by the designer Ing. Arpád Jakab, after whom it was named.

Interestingly, in the construction of the palace were also used discarded stone parts from the Dome of St. Elizabeth.
During the period of April-May 1945, the Jakab´s Palace was the seat of the President of Czechoslovakia, Dr. Edvard Beneš.

The Dominican church is the oldest church in the city and the oldest preserved building in Košice.

It was built around 1290, the first written report from 1303. The oldest part of the church is the nave, which is still Romanesque and originally had narrow windows, which were enlarged during the Baroque reconstruction into the present shape.

The sanctuary with its support system is Gothic and so is the tower, which is built at the northern junction of the nave with the sanctuary, as prescribed by law for mendicant orders.

Walls are covered by frescos by Štefan Vörös from the period of 1750 – 1758. The blue ceiling is remarkable, it gives impression that the church has no roof.

Sigismund's Tower is the northern tower of the magnificent St. Elizabeth's Cathedral.

It's height is 60 metres. Whoever decides to climb it has to take about 161 steps.

The staircase is very narrow and the steps are high, so the ascent and descent are quite difficult but the reward is a breathtaking view of part of the city of Košice.

There are several "resting places" along the way. In one there are two bells, in one there is a clockwork mechanism.

The unique symbol of the Kosice, Cathedral of St.Elisabeth, attracts tourists with the great location right in the centre of the city.

Construction work on the cathedral started around 1380. It is the furthest east western-style gothic cathedral in Europe, as well as the biggest temple in Slovakia with 1200m2 of area and up to 5000 people of capacity. 🇸🇰

Inside of the Cathedral there are many historical subjects such as: The fascinating Altar of St. Elisabeth, a rare gothic double spiral staircase – one of just five of the kind in europe, the crypt of the leader of the biggest anti-Habsburg uprising in the former Kingdom of Hungary, Francis II Rákóczi, and also a sundial from 1477.
