This is a really good review of the Casamance region of Senegal. I'm American and live in Dakar, Senegal, the capital city.
Back in the day, when I was younger, I was an African drum maker (1st woman, 1st ADOS) here in Senegal and the name of my company was SenegalStyle DJEMBES! (spelled with the exclamation point!). My drums are collectors items now and I have retired from the game.
Here is a link to my picture host back then, because I ALWAYS have photos to prove what I say so ya'll can see I ain't lying! lol! I don't have to lie about this stuff... my life is so bizarre, the truth works most of the time!

ANYWAY, for people planning on spending 8 to 10 days on the ground in Senegal, look at the link above and see the 'Casamance' section from when I legit had a grass hut and lived in a village with the Laobe woodcutters. They were the ones making the drum shells (to me specs!) for my drums, that you'll also see in the link above.

The person writing this seems to just be a meandering about, to and fro and that's the speed of most folks in Casamance. I lived there off and on for two or three years and all you can really do there is CHILL.
If that's what you'd like to do, add The Casamance to your bucket list and cross over to The Gambia as well since it's right on the border.
Guinea... ahhhhh well, let's say there's a HUGE Guinean population in Dakar, the 2nd largest group of Africans in the country with businesses EVERYWHERE and there's a reason for that.
I'm told it's beautiful but the infrastructure isn't very good and the roads are trash like she describes here. Once you've driven on silky smooth Senegalese highways, going back to potholes and caverns in the street is difficult!
Also we ALWAYS HAVE electricity, water, great internet, phone service never drops... great personal lifestyle and infrastructure here in Dakar. I don't do struggleville as a challenge anymore, I don't have to prove nuthin to nobody! lol!
Drop me a note if you'd like to visit Senegal and explore the Casamance. The ferry is a YACHT... TRUE TALK with private rooms or shared and YOU WILL LOVE IT! I'll put some photos in the comments on my wall so click on my profile to see the original post as they won't
I promise you will - I loved living in Casamance during my drummaking days, I honestly did. Look at the Fotki picture host above and you'll see me looking all bright eyed and beautiful!
My email is [email protected] if you'd like to talk about a trip! I've been in Senegal for 25 years and wild horses and a million bucks couldn't drag me away from this country!
Here are my favorite cities and things to do in the Casamance region of southern Senegal.
