Situated in Anambè (400 km south of Dakar), Farafeena was conceived to stimulate sustainable rural growth in this village where Farafeena's founder’s family has established development projects and a holistic understanding of Anambè's socioeconomic challenges. On Farafeena's 2-hectare land in Anambè, we offer accommodation to travellers in traditional ecological bungalows, and volunteer programs t
o worldwide youth interested in public health, environmental conservation, social work, organic farming, and arts. In Anambè’s ideal natural setting and resources, volunteers can gain hands-on working experience abroad, share and apply their skills in multiple areas:
• Agricultural internships (rice cultivation, field rehabilitation, land leveling, soil preparation, irrigation)
• Forest conservation (tree nursery), herbal medicine research (moringa, artemisia annua), and natural oils and soaps fabrication
• Facilitating workshops within the village on relevant themes (nutrition, jatropha biofuel, transition to organic agriculture)
• Eco-Construction work
• Language exchange (volunteer’s language/Pular and Wolof)
• Teaching at the local school in Anambè
• Health care and nursing at the local hospital
• Photography and cinematography (documentary filmmaking)
• Arts and crafts apprenticeships (furniture, musical instruments)
Agriculture is the backbone of the Casamance region, and with local families’ well-being so tied to the productivity of the land, there is a great need for agricultural development in Anambe. Through Farafeena’s partnership with Association Second Souffle Africain, the site in Anambè serves as a unique and excellent base to get involved in sustainable agriculture and to be a part of the major national rice cultivation enterprise recently launched in the Anambè Basin. Farafeena can also arrange travel tours around the Casamance region:
• Anambè is in a serene, well-preserved environment that is conducive to relaxation and nature tours that include trips to the breathtaking Anambè River side and nearby forests.
• Due to its history, Anambè offers a unique opportunity to experience authentic Peul and Mandike culture. Southern Senegal is renowned for its legacy of kora, djembé, and traditional flute players.
• The nearby Diaobé town is an impressive meeting point between all of southern Senegal’s bordering countries. The weekly Diaobé market makes it an intense commercial crossroads where citizens from Gambia, Guinea-Bissau, Guinea-Conakry, Mali and Burkina Faso converge to exchange products of all sorts.
• Anambè is conveniently situated to be a base or stopover for visits to Gambia (200km), Mali (330km) and Guinea Bissau (60km).
