Zambia has lifted all COVID-related entry restrictions with immediate effect, according to a communication from the Zambia National Public Health Institute (ZNPHI).

Travellers no longer have to show proof of vaccination or recovery, nor do they need a negative test result for COVID-19.

Nonetheless, the government continues to encourage the population to get vaxxed. “To prevent and control COVID-19, the most sustainable way remains vaccination. Therefore, while we have lifted the need to provide evidence of vaccination or negative disease status, we encourage everyone to be vaccinated,” says Professor Roma Chilengi, DG of the ZNPHI.

After a two-month citywide lockdown that was lifted on June 1, Shanghai authorities say they have finally “declared victory” against the latest round of COVID-19, following two consecutive days of zero new infections reported in the city.

Shanghai is now to gradually reopen museums, art galleries and all types of indoor and outdoor A-level tourist attractions across the city from July 1, according to English language state-owned newspaper, Global Times.

Cinemas and venues will gradually reopen to the public from July 8.

At present, 67 out of 134 A-level scenic spots in Shanghai have been reopened.

The Shanghai Municipal Health Commission said on June 29 that there were no new locally confirmed cases or asymptomatic infections in the city on June 28, noting that the city has not had any new cases or infections for two consecutive days.

Local authorities reminded the public to follow necessary epidemic prevention and control measures.

The Shanghai Disney Resort has also reopened on June 30 - tickets have been available for sale from June 29. Strengthened health and safety measures have been introduced at the resort since the reopening.

Mauritius has announced a further easing of COVID-19 restrictions for arrivals.

From today (July 1), on-arrival testing for fully vaccinated visitors is no longer required, but the rules for unvaccinated arrivals remains the same.

The mask requirement is also now only applicable in public areas such as hospitals, ports, the airport, and public transport.

Mauritius reopened its borders on October 1, 2021, and over 500 000 tourists have subsequently flocked to the island. The nation’s double vaccination rate now stands at over 90%, and around two-thirds of all over 18 have also received their booster shots.

Responding to the latest easing of COVID-19 measures, Arvind Bundhun, Director of the Mauritius Tourism Promotion Authority, says: “I am confident that our post-pandemic recovery is well underway, and with the easing of sanitary measures, bookings for the second half of 2022 will be stimulated.”

Malawi to drop PCR tests

The Malawian Minister of Health, Khumbize Kandodo Chiponda, has announced that all incoming travellers who are fully vaccinated and have a digital vaccination certificate will no longer be required to produce a negative PCR test certificate to enter the country from June 1.

However, unvaccinated travellers, or travellers who do not have a valid electronically verifiable full vaccination certificate, will still be required to produce a negative PCR test no older than 72 hours at the time of arrival in the country.

While these changes have been announced, they have not been gazetted.

This move will be welcomed by the SADC region’s tourism sector as the majority of countries in the bloc no longer require PCR tests. It aligns with what Tourism Business Council of South Africa CEO, Tshifhiwa Tshivhengwa, said at Africa’s Travel Indaba in Durban earlier this month that all barriers to tourism in the region must be removed to stimulate intra-Africa travel.

“The private sector must now also lead the way and ensure that the SADC region works together to address the collective barriers to travel – such as visa access and harmonised regulations,” he said.

To that end, TBCSA was facilitating the creation of a Tourism Committee consisting of private sector role players across the region to ensure engage with governments and ensure the policy makers properly understand the impact of the barriers as well as the potential revenue opportunities should these barriers be properly addressed.

Industry, which often sells travel to multiple destinations within SADC, continues to highlight the need for more harmonised regulations across the region.

CEO of the MORE Family Collection, Robert More, said: “By aligning our regulations and removing this stumbling block, we make it easier, more affordable and, consequently, more attractive, to visit our shores.”

Mozambique has finally joined its Southern Africa counterparts in dropping the requirement for PCR tests for inbound travellers fully vaccinated against COVID-19.

All unvaccinated travellers, with the exception of children under the age of 11, must present a negative PCR test for COVID-19 taken within the previous 72 hours. Travellers who do not submit a vaccine certificate or PCR test must do an antigen test on arrival.

This was announced yesterday (Wednesday, April 20) by President Filipe Nyusi who said this was in response to a dramatic drop in the number of COVID-19 infections in the country as well as the achievement of a high rate of vaccination.

He pointed out that, to date, about 13,7 million Mozambicans aged 18 and above had been vaccinated against COVID-19, which leaves about one and a half million people who are not vaccinated.

A number of health and safety protocols remain, including wearing masks when travelling on public transport and in closed spaces. Masks are not required outdoors.

The tourism industry has welcomed this latest development, with Co-Founder of Destination Mozambique, Cordelia Masher, telling Travel News: “The good news has arrived at a time when international travel is finally resuming and Mozambique now joins the rest of Southern Africa in acknowledging the need to remove PCR testing for vaccinated travellers.”

She said this would encourage more visitors to Mozambique. “As we move into our post-COVID era, we hope to work more closely with government to grow the tourism industry and develop a partnership in successfully marketing the destination to assist with the tourism industry creating jobs and further investment into Mozambique.”

Nikki Weidemann, who co-founded Destination Mozambique with Masher, was equally upbeat. “We are excited to get Mozambique back on the map and although the past two years have been a trying time for tourism, it has brought about new opportunities for the destination and already we have seen new hotels and lodges being built, international airlines indicating that they will be returning to our skies and, of course, the stories of the developments in the national parks have been encouraging.”

One of the most significant developments in the national parks Weidemann referred to is the establishment – in December 2021 – of the new Maputo National Park following the merging of the terrestrial and marine ecosystems of Maputo Special Reserve and Ponta do Ouro Partial Marine Reserve into one conservation area.

Eswatini has reopened to all vaccinated international visitors without the need for a negative PCR test result.

According to The Kingdom of Eswatini’s official tourism website, those entering the country must produce one of the following upon arrival: either a valid COVID-19 vaccination certificate or a valid negative PCR test result that is no older than 72 hours.

Fully vaccinated visitors are those who have received a complete course of a vaccine recognised by the World Health Organization.

Children under 12 years of age are exempt from the above measures.

Within Eswatini, mask-wearing during large outdoor gatherings, all indoor events, in shops and on public transport is still mandatory.

Malaysia is set to welcome back international travellers after Government announced the full reopening of its borders for the first time after nearly two years of COVID-19-related closures, beginning today (April 1).

Fully vaccinated travellers are exempt from quarantine on arrival, but must show a negative PCR test result, obtained within the 48 hours prior to travel. A negative rapid antigen test is also accepted, received in the 24 hours before travel.

Travellers must also take a rapid antigen test within 24 hours of arrival in Malaysia.

Arrivals are also encouraged to download the MySejahtera contact tracing mobile app and complete the pre-departure form under the ‘Traveller’ icon within the app. There is no longer a need to apply for the MyTravelPass to enter Malaysia.

However, international travellers who are not fully vaccinated must undergo five-day quarantine upon arrival. Those aged 17 and under are exempt from this regulation but must still take the on-arrival PCR test.

Singapore Airlines has some good news for South Africans! From April 1, all fully vaccinated travellers on all Singapore Airlines and Scoot flights will enjoy quarantine-free entry into Singapore without any on-arrival testing.

All travellers must still meet prevailing visa requirements and also must take a pre-departure test – either the PCR or the Antigen test is acceptable – which needs to be taken within the two days before departure.

Visitors must also purchase travel insurance with a minimum cover of US$30 000 (approximately ZAR436 400) for Covid-19-related medical treatment and hospitalisation costs, prior to travel to Singapore.

This means that SIA and Scoot will no longer designate specific Vaccinated Travel Lane (VTL) flights from April 1. The airline advises that existing customers who are currently booked on a VTL flight on or after April 1, may still travel as planned. They need not make any changes to their booking.

Travellers who are not fully vaccinated will be subject to prevailing quarantine and testing requirements.

More information on the changes to entry requirements for Singapore can be found on Singapore’s Safe Travel.

Singapore Airlines currently has daily flights between Singapore and Cape Town, via Johannesburg.

SQ 478 departs Singapore daily at 01h30, arriving Johannesburg 06h10. The flight from Johannesburg, SQ479 departs daily at 13h45 and arrives in Singapore at 06h10 the following day.
