Who is watching who?! Humpback whales are known for their inquisitive and charismatic personalities. “Spyhopping” is when a whale brings the rostrum (head) vertically out of the water, to perhaps “spy” on whatever it is they want to get a closer look at. As humpback whale calves continue to grow in size, so does their curiosity. In yesterday’s whale watch, we encountered this yearling calf, who seemed to enjoy being vertical in the water column. Whether curious of us, or something else, it was surely an incredible sight to see!

Like any young baby, humpback whale calves often don’t like be far from mom’s side - even when they’re being active! This little calf was busy tail throwing and flipper slapping right on top of momma’s head and back!

Our time with the whales is running low, so we are making sure to make the most of each trip; and apparently, so are they! We found two different mom an calf pairs on today’s adventures. Breaching is not something we see everyday, let alone every trip; however, today seemed to be the exception! We encountered surface active calves on both tours today! It is such a pleasure to see these young whales be happy and carefree, especially just before they get ready to tackle their first migration!

A little whale in a big ocean taking flight!

The area where we look for whales in is often referred to as “the playground” or “nursery;” giving these young humpback whale calves an opportunity to grow up and play in a warm, shallow, and protected area. What a delight it is that our backyard can provide such a place for these young whales to be wild and carefree, just as they should be!

We often say that watching whales requires patience, but it most certainly always pays off! That was definitely the case on yesterday morning’s trip! We spotted a whale in darker water who was taking 15/20 minute dives. Due to his behaviors, our guides suspected he might be singing. We dropped the hydrophone and heard the most beautiful, loud, and clear whale song! We knew he was singing his heart out and it was so special to be able to listen to him, even though we couldn’t see him often. With each surfacing, he got a wee bit closer and as we sat with the engines off, we began hearing his song from the surface! With goosebumps and tears all around, it quickly became an experience and trip of a lifetime!

As we have previously discussed, the reasons behind surface activity are still a bit of a mystery to us. However, one of the reasons could be to attract a mate. Typically, when a female is looking for another whale to mate with, she will start trying to attract their attention through various displays at the surface - including breaching and tail slapping. After she has attracted the attention of nearby males, she will then lead a competition group. Although we are uncertain of the gender of this whale, the behaviors we observed seemed to indicate that is what was potentially occuring!

One of the most thrilling wildlife encounters on the ocean - whale competition. Yesterday morning, our guests had the opportunity to witness it first hand! We watched as a humpback whale blew bubble trails, slashed their tails, slapped their flippers, and utilized head lunges in order to assert his position, impress the female, and earn the right to mate. Being a behavior only seen in the breeding grounds, it is quite the sight to see!

There are many theories as to why whales jump out of the water - a behavior we call “breaching”. It could be a form of communication, excercise, to help get rid of dead skin and barnacles, or it could be play. With all of their muscle in the peduncle (tail stock), it only takes 2-3 kicks of their tail in order to launch their entire body out of the water. The whales’ greatest gift to us in certainly their mystery and any time we spend with them is special, no matter what their behaviors are.

It’s always important to remember that we are encountering wild animals in their natural environment when we go whale watching. Since there is no time of day or year that they are more likely to one behavior or the other, it’s always important to spend as much time as possible in the presence of these ocean giants!

While watching this mother, calf, and es**rt trio on our afternoon trip today; the calf decided to make a splash! This little whale took part in lots of tail slapping at the surface while the adults seemed to be resting below. Watching the carefree, charismatic nature of the humpback whale calves is always exciting!
