🇺🇸🇬🇧 Considered as the ancestor of the piano, the balafon is a percussion musical instrument of African origin. It is made up of hardwood blades of increasing size, mounted on hollow calabashes that serve as sounding boards. The blades are struck with wooden or rubber mallets to produce a clear, melodious sound.

The balafon originated in West Africa, where it is played in many countries, including Mali, Senegal, Côte d'Ivoire, Guinea, Burkina Faso and Togo. It is an important instrument in the culture of these countries and is often used in traditional ceremonies, celebrations and festivals.

It is a very versatile instrument that can be used to play a wide variety of music, from traditional African songs to modern compositions. It is also a popular instrument for teaching music, as it is easy to learn and play.

The story tells that his name comes from "bala fò", which means "to play the bala" in Mandingo, and that he was born in the 12th century in the Kingdom of Sosso, between Mali and Guinea, at the time of the legendary Soudiata Keita. In 1235, the famous battle of Kirina enabled Soudiata Keita to defeat Soumaoro, king of Sosso, and be proclaimed king of the Mali empire. Bala Fasseké then recovered Soumaoro's magic balafon and used it to sing the praises of Soudiata and the Mandingo empire. Bala Fasseké thus became the first griot to play the balafon. He passed on this knowledge to the entire Kouyatés lineage. It is thanks to him that the balafon can be found throughout Africa today.

Have you ever seen or heard the balafon being played?🤔 Share your experience with us in comments😍

From his programme Archives d'Afrique, which looks at the contemporary history of Africa through the eyes of its great men, illustrated with sound archives and testimonies from those still alive, comes the quote that opens each programme, a sentence that became a leitmotif for listeners: "No one has the right to erase a page of a nation's history, because a nation without history is a world without a soul".

Renowned for his intellectual commitment and in-depth analysis of African issues, he has contributed to the understanding of contemporary challenges on the continent. Alain Foka is often praised for his critical perspective and balanced approach to news. His contribution to journalism has earned him awards and recognition in the media community.

🇺🇸🇬🇧 Today, let's discover Ethiopia, a country located in the Horn of Africa, in East Africa. It is a country of great geographical, cultural and historical diversity, and one of the oldest nations in the world.

Ethiopia has a rich and ancient history, and is one of the oldest Christian nations in the world. The Ethiopian Empire played an important role in the Horn of Africa region.

Also famous for resisting European colonization in the 19th century, Ethiopia is indeed one of the few African countries never to have been colonized by a foreign power. This is often attributed to the Ethiopians' fierce resistance to attempts at colonization, and to Italy's defeat in the first Italo-Ethiopian war at the Battle of Adoua in 1896.

Emperor Menelik II played a key role in defending Ethiopia's independence.

This history of resistance against colonization helped forge a strong national identity in Ethiopia and maintain its independence throughout the colonial era in Africa. Ethiopia is often seen as a symbol of pride and independence for many African countries that fought for their own independence.

Did you know the history of this beautiful country?🤔

🇬🇧🇺🇸 The talking drum, or "Atopani" among the Ewe of Togo, is a carved wooden drum covered with goatskin. It is played by striking the stretched skin with sticks or with the hands.

It is a complex communication system that transmits messages using combinations of sounds, rhythms and melodies. Atopani are played in such a way as to reproduce the intonations of the Ewe language.

Traditionally used to communicate important information over long distances, sometimes hundreds of kilometres, their presence was particularly useful in an environment where mountains, dense vegetation and other obstacles could make long-distance verbal communication difficult.

Messages transmitted by the ewe talking drum can include news, important announcements, calls to meetings or ceremonies, political messages, warnings and more. Drummers are often specialists who have in-depth knowledge of the system to effectively convey these messages.

Despite the emergence of modern communication technologies, the Ewe talking drum remains an important part of Ewe culture and tradition. It is used at ceremonies, festivals and other cultural occasions to preserve this ancient tradition.

Atopani is a fascinating example of traditional communication that has been used for centuries to facilitate the transmission of essential information within the Ewe community. It is an art form, a means of communication and an important cultural symbol for the Ewe.

Have you ever seen or heard it played? Tell us about your experience 😀

🇺🇸🇬🇧 Adinkra symbols are a set of graphic symbols originating from the West African region, in particular from the Akan people of Ghana and Ivory Coast

These symbols are widely used in art, crafts, pottery, weaving, decoration, fashion and visual communication. They take their name from a type of decorative fabric bearing these symbols, and each symbol has a particular meaning, often linked to proverbs, cultural values, ideas, qualities or abstract concepts from these peoples.

Adinkra symbols have gained popularity beyond West Africa and are appreciated worldwide for their unique aesthetic and profound meanings.

They are a fine example of how art, culture and visual communication combine to convey essential cultural values and ideas within Akan society and beyond.

🇺🇸🇬🇧 Meet Anas Seko who is an environmental activist from Benin. He is the forerunner of the "Ecological Pressure" movement, which involves raising environmental awareness using the principles of communication and social marketing to encourage people to adopt eco-citizen behaviour.

This strategy is deployed through a variety of methods, including the management of social networks to achieve a green impact. He believes that social media are a powerful tool for social mobilisation, creating a sustainable community, raising awareness and making claims.

So, with his team, they create content and establish strategies for online presence and influence to achieve the 17 Sustainable Development Goals defined by UNICEF. They also organise events such as spontaneous cleanling campaigns, film projections and even debates to bring people together around the same table to discuss the challenges of sustainable development.

For Anas, preserving the environment is not a question of personal inclination or taste, it's a crucial question that concerns absolutely everyone. He believes that whatever our field of activity or social standing, we should preserve the environment, because without plants, animals and natural environments, there would be no life on Earth.

Thank you Anas for this breath of well-being that you are infusing into our beautiful continent.

🇬🇧🇺🇸 Festive funerals, also known as 'celebratory funerals', are a widespread cultural tradition in many parts of Africa. Unlike Western funerals, which are often marked by sadness and mourning, festive funerals in Africa are marked by the celebration of the life of the deceased, music, dance, food, drink and the active participation of the community.

They focus on celebrating the life of the deceased rather than the sadness of their death: participants share anecdotes, memories and joyful moments associated with the deceased;
Bands of local musicians are often present to liven up the event, and participants dance to honour the deceased. Traditional dishes and favourites of the deceased are served.

Often attended by a large number of people from the community, sometimes hundreds or thousands, the funeral can last several days or even weeks, depending on the culture, religion and financial resources of the family. It is an opportunity for the family of the deceased to receive the support and condolences of the community.

Festive funerals play an important role in preserving the cultural heritage and traditions of the African community. They strengthen social and community ties and reveal all the beauty of Africa.

Have you ever attended a funeral in Africa?🤔

29/10/2023

🇺🇸🇬🇧 Those beautiful images you're scrolling through, would you have imagined they were coffins? Well, it's a tradition in Ghana that commemorates the deceased in the most special of ways. Let us tell you a story.

In Ghana, chiefs are often carried in palaquins (also known as sedan chairs) during traditional celebrations. In the 1950s, Seth Kane Kwei, a young carpenter, made a palaquin in the shape of a cocoa pod for one of these chiefs. Unfortunately, the chief died suddenly before the festival and was buried in the palanquin. At his funeral, the unique coffin attracted many admirers.

Shortly afterwards, Kane Kwei's grandmother passed away. Having grown up in Teshie, a coastal suburb close to Accra airport, she had always been intrigued by the planes that flew overhead. However, she never had the chance to fly. Remembering the enthusiastic crowds at the chief's funeral a few months earlier, Kane Kwei decided to commemorate his death by giving her something she hadn't been able to achieve in her life. He buried her in an airplane-shaped coffin so that she could fly to the afterlife.

Within weeks, the local population began asking for unique coffins. The fisherman asked for a boat; the farmer, for an onion. The coffins, also known as abebuu adekai or "proverb boxes", quickly became one of Ghana's most unique traditions.

Today, there are some 10 workshops specializing in such coffins; however, none can compare with the Kane Kwei carpentry workshop, the cradle of the tradition.
Today, the workshop is owned by the descendants of Seth Kane Kwei and run by his grandson, Eric Adjetey Anang, artist and master coffin-maker.

What do you think about this tradition?😀

🇺🇸🇬🇧 Natural wonders! 😍

Natural pigments are coloring substances derived from natural sources such as plants, minerals, insects, stones and other organisms.

They've been used for thousands of years to dye fabrics, create paint, and add color to various arts and crafts applications.

In Tokpli, Togo, we met an artist who rubs stones he finds in the waterfall to create colors. These stones were used to create this magnificent drawing, in all the beauty of natural art.

Beautiful, isn't it?😀

🇺🇸🇬🇧 Meet Laetitia Ky who is a feminist Ivorian actress and artist who creates sculptures from her braided hair.
Born in Abidjan into a modest family, she began braiding her hair at the age of 5, and as a teenager enjoyed YouTube videos and beauty blogs.

In 2016, she began to create hair-braiding sculptures, posting photographs of them on social networks. She makes her braids by incorporating various materials: metal wires, hangers, threads, wax or hair extensions. Feminism is one of her sources of inspiration, particularly at the time of the movement.

She sometimes works with fashion brands to promote their products using her hair sculptures, such as with ethical shoe brand Umòja in late 2019, Marc Jacobs in 2020, Giuseppe Zanotti in 2021, and Apple.

In 2020, she is one of the finalists in the "Instragrammers" category at the twelfth Shorty Awards.
In 2021, she enters the Guinness Book of Records as the person who has done the most jumping jacks with her own hair. She achieved this record on March 2, 2021 in Abidjan.

Thank you Laetitia, for taking African culture to another level and showing a great part of it to the world. 🙏🏿
