The Évala are an important cultural tradition of the Kabyè people, who live mainly in northern Togo. They are celebrated annually to mark the end of the agricultural season and to honor local divinities.Generally held between June and August, they last several days, sometimes even weeks. MASQUES AFRICAINS
🇺🇸🇬🇧 African masks are objects of art and culture with profound significance in many traditional African societies. They play an essential role in ceremonies, religious rituals, dances, festivals and other special occasions.
Generally made from natural materials such as wood, leather, plant fibers, fabrics, animal horns or metals, each mask is unique and reflects the traditions, beliefs and aesthetics of a specific culture.
These masks often have great symbolic and spiritual significance. They may represent ancestral spirits, deities, revered ancestors, totem animals or powers of nature. They can also serve as means of communication with the spiritual world, vehicles of power or protective guardians.
The art of mask carving is often passed down from generation to generation within artistic communities. Sculptors, often considered talented craftsmen and artists, use traditional techniques and simple tools to create these expressive works of art.
Today, African masks continue to attract worldwide interest, not only as art objects, but also as precious testimonies to the richness and diversity of African cultures.

Our guests were absolutely ecstatic to discover and have the opportunity to touch several artistic disciplines at the same time in one and the same place. And let's not forget the artists, who were available, patient and attentive to offer us the best of our time at the Kékéli cultural center.
Situated in the heart of Togolese greenery, the waterfalls of the Plateaux region and the town of Kpalimé, the Kekeli cultural space came into being in 2013. It was born of the desire of a Franco-Togolese couple, in charge of a cultural association and keen to promote, enhance and develop local culture and traditions. 🇺🇸🇬🇧 The fire dance is a traditional practice in Togo that is associated with the belief in spiritual forces and the veneration of ancestors. This dance is practiced in Bassar country and is one of Togo's six major cultural expressions inscribed in 2004 on the Tentative List of Masterpieces of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity.
The fire dance is often performed at important celebrations, such as funerals or weddings, and is performed by men who have been initiated into traditional practices and rituals.
The dancers go into a deep trance, inspired by the ancestors and spirits. The dancers' movements are fast and energetic, guided by singing and drumming. Dancers may also jump over flames or walk on hot coals, believing that their trance protects them from being burned.
The fire dance is considered a sacred ritual to honor the ancestors and connect with spiritual forces. It is also a form of cultural expression that reflects the richness of Bassar tradition and culture. Although the fire dance has become a popular tourist attraction in Togo, it remains an important traditional practice for the communities that perform it.

🇺🇸🇬🇧 Tchébé dance is a dance performed by the natives of the Plateaux region, specifically the Ifès, a people from the city of Atakpamé, in Togo. Tchébé (Ifè word), which means "long legs." The dance involves standing on long sticks that are 3 to 5 meters high and dancing to the rhythm of instruments and songs.
According to the myth, during a hunting party, a hunter saw fairies with only one foot and one hand. Something that caught his curiosity even more was that they had put a stick under their single leg and were dancing. In order to impress these fairies, the hunter fired a shot, causing them to flee and abandon their false feet. He took them and brought them home to imitate the action. Thus, he passed on this secret to other members of his family, who perpetuated it.
The preparations for the tchébé dance nowadays are less complicated but still present. The first condition is asking divinities to determine if the day of the celebration is favorable or not. Then, they call on the fairies, who are supposed to hold the secrets of the dance and make sacrifices to them. If the chosen day is unfavorable, there are practices to ward off bad luck.
After the collective preparations come the individual ones. Each stilt walker must eat food without salt or pepper and only eat porridge on the day of the dance. During this period, it is forbidden to have sexual intercourse. And each person can invoke the divinity of the Vodou pantheon that their family worships for protection.
Before performances, a serious rehearsal is held in the forest, where the dance was discovered. The stilt walkers perform this dance with their faces masked so as not to be recognized by non-initiates, which is proof of the supernatural that surrounds this dance.
The dance is performed at major events such as the harvest festival or cultural performances. The stilt walkers are the main actors of the dance, followed by the singers who praise the powers of the stilt walkers and th

vodou
🇬🇧🇺🇸 Often mistaken for witchcraft, Vodoun refers to the set of deities and invisible forces and the religious practices that are specific to them. 👹 This spirituality is based on the sacralization of the forces of nature and the ancestors.
Each worshipped deity has a community, rituals, characteristics, and particular functions. The Vodoun religion has followers in Ghana, Togo, Benin, Nigeria, the Caribbean (especially Haiti), America, and a lesser extent in Europe. 💁🏾♀️
The ceremonies of each deity are performed by priests and priestesses, often initiated from a young age. Generally, they begin with purification and continue with sacrifices, songs, praises, and prayers. 🤲🏾
Vodoun is still strongly practiced. ✊🏾 Are you curious about vodoun?
Le vodoun est encore fortement pratiqué. ✊🏾 Êtes-vous curieux de connaître le vodoun ?

What African dish would you like to learn to cook if you had the opportunity? 😉
