Fair Earth Farm Farming in Nature's Way Fair Earth Farm is a small (1/2 ha) natural farm in Chiang Mai, northern Thailand.

We are an experiment in food sovereignty and restorative agriculture at the family and community levels, informed by values of ecology, justice and peace. (These are, of course, the antithesis of our current industrial food system, thus the need for farms like ours.)

“When we design, we are always building for future floods, future fires, future droughts, and planting a tree a few inches tall that will be future forest giants, throw future shadows. Future populations will need future soils and forest resources, shelter, security. So somebody needs to range ahead in time, scout out the next century. We are not daydreaming. We are time scouts.” -

In terms of food production, I’m not quite sure what to call myself. I suppose I’m a home gardener. My residential plot is approximately 1/3rd of an acre, occupied mostly by our home and vegetation; some of it native. Most of the native vegetation is comprised of four slash pines and five laurel...

Vineyards sit in moon-like craters on a volcano in Lanzarote, Canary Islands, Spain.
Vineyards on Lanzarote date from the mid-18th century, following six years of volcanic eruptions that blanketed the island in black ash. Semicircles of dry-stone walling protect the vines from the relentless wind on Lanzarote and a single vine is planted in a fairly deep depression behind each wall. The vine is never watered. With virtually no rain it catches what little rain there is, but condensation forms in these depressions overnight as the air temperature cools the heated volcanic soils and this provides most of the vine's water requirements. It seems a desperately labour-intensive way of farming but they have done it this way for generations.

Koh Kong Province in southwest Cambodia is home to one of the last great wild places in Southeast Asia. A 30-minute drive or float from the provincial capital rewards with the cry of gibbons and the crazy mechanical whir of hornbill flight. The ruthless and greedy will keep trying to kill it with dams, casinos and clear cuts. And the young and courageous will keep trying to fight them by any means they can. One way is community-based tourism. Visit while you can.

Banning imports of American meat makes sense. But really, for Thailand to criticize another country's meat industry is like the carcinogenic pot calling the chemical-laden kettle black, isn't it?

Thai pig and chicken farmers have raised concerns that a ban on imports of pork and chicken meat from the US could be lifted under pressure from the US.
