There is no better way to experience Bangkok’s Chinatown than simply getting lost. The three roads you need to know are Song Wat, Soi Wanit 1/Sampeng Lane, and Yaowarat. Between these three parallel roads are networks of small streets full of markets, street foods, local businesses that will take up an entire of afternoon to explore.

Song Wat primarily caters to locals. Businesses here that have lasted generations continue to sell very specific consumer/industrial wares. Unless you need weighing scales or aluminum kitchen ware, head on over the Soi Wanit 1/Sampeng Lane. Here is where the real market action is for a curious visitor. Shop til you drop and enjoy viewing old shophouses that run endlessly on both sides.

If you time things right and you emerge out onto Yaowarat in the evening, get ready to join some locals for some of the most well known street foods in town. Seafood, noodles, fruit juices, desserts, you name it. Best way to get the most out of this food heaven? Taste hop. Snack on whatever catches your eye and keep on moving.

Thai features meeting Chinese Buddhist architectural designs makes Chee Chin Khor a unique temple on the river.

On the west side of the Bangkok River stands a Chinese pagoda that is unmissable by anyone travelling by boat. The striking orange roofed tower has a prominent appearance yet a low profile – often people wonder what it is but cannot find any answers. Wonder no more. The structure is part of the Chee Chin Khor Moral Uplifting Society temple complex that has been hiding in plain sight for decades.

Bangkok National Museum showcases historical artifacts that transport you back many eras and make you realize how rich the Thai culture truly is.

Bangkok National Museum was once Wang Na, translated from Thai as the Front Palace, where the viceroy took up residence. Most often, they were a son or brother of the king. The grounds are expansive and layout typical of the complexes of royalty. A stroll around allows one to appreciate the preserved architecture and the importance it once held in the system of royal residences. When King Chulalongkorn abolished the heir presumptive tradition and replaced it with the concept of crown prince as heir apparent, its use became obsolete. The last viceroy lived there until 1885 and it was turned into a museum in 1887 to exhibit the large collection of artifacts that King Mongkut had inherited and amassed.

Bangkok is largely known throughout the world as primarily a Buddhist city and that should come as no surprise to anyone. The city is chock-full of opulent temples serving all sects of Buddhism and its populace are devoted practitioners of the religion. While Thailand does not formally recognize a state religion, it does tie Buddhism closely to Thai traditions. The dominance of one religion often makes one forget that religious diversity can still exist. As such, many travelers are pleasantly surprised by the existence of the Bangkok Protestant Cemetery, one that dates back all the way to 1853.

The Bank of Thailand Learning Center is a working space and an educational museum with a magnificent river vista.

The Bank of Thailand (BOT), the central bank of the country, was founded in 1942 to deal with management the state’s currency, money supply, and other functions. In 1945, BOT moved into Bang Khun Phrom Palace where former Prince Paribatra Sukhumbandhu resided until his forced exile. Across Samsen Road from BOT’s headquarter, the national banknote printing plant was built right on the riverfront. The facility was in function until operations moved elsewhere, forcing the building to close. To commemorate its 75th anniversary, BOT decided to open a learning center and the printing plant was chosen as the site. In 2018, Bank of Thailand Learning Center opened its doors to the public, offering visitors a glimpse into its printing past and more.

New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day

Despite being assumed as a global standard, Thailand only began starting the New Year on January 1st in 1941 during the reign of Rama VIII. This is one of the best times to explore since most of the city’s population will have gone home or left for a needed holiday. Typically, most locations like Wat Pho, Wat Arun, and the Grand Palace will be open through the end of the year.

For those who want some excitement and celebration to help bring in the New Year, there will be firework shows and delicious New Years dinners at Bangkok River’s luxury hotels and on the rooftop bars across the city. Don’t forget to bring your fancy dress or suit and get ready to party at Bangkok River into the New Year!

Christmas may not be a traditional holiday in Thailand, but it has become an increasingly popular event to celebrate, particularly in Bangkok. So if you’re visiting Bangkok during this time of year, you can still find ways meet your festive desires.

The many malls around the city will be adorned with joyful lights, extravagant decorations, and some will even have Christmas trees. The power of nostalgia and community pervades every part of Bangkok Folk Museum

It takes a visionary who is both civic-minded and selfless to the utmost degree to be able to part with a treasure and gift it to the public to appreciate. Waraporn Suravadee was one such rare person, who in 2004 gave her house to the city so that its award-winning classical Thai architecture and her possessions from her life preserved from decades past can be shared.

Bang Lamphu lives under the shadow of Khaosan Road as an uncelebrated community that offers much insight into the area’s history, culture, and the lives of Bangkokians who came before us.

Bang Lamphu, a neighborhood in old town, gets its name from the lamphu tree or mangrove apple that once filled the river’s edge in the area around where Santi Chai Prakan Public Park stands today. In the past during a time when the river and canals were still the main transportation routes, people would know that they have reached northern area of Phra Nakhon district or Rattanakosin Island by looking out for these lamphu trees. These trees slowly declined in numbers throughout history and the last lamphu tree lived until 2012, dying from damages from the 2011 Thailand floods. Bang Lamphu’s natural history may have been wiped out but its anthropological stories can still be learned.

Bangkok 1899's open space encourages visitors to pursue the lost art of leisure, unburdened by consumerism.

Ban Chao Phraya Thammasakmontri, originally built in 1899, was designed by Italian architect Mario Tamagno. His most famous work includes Ananta Samakhom Throne Hall, Neilson Hays Library and Bangkok Railway Station (Hua Lamphong). For the very first time, this landmark is open to the public.

ATT 19 is multidisciplinary retail, art, and exhibition space breathing even more artistic vibrancy into the Creative District.

Nestled deep in an intimate alley in the Creative District is ATT 19, an elegant mixed-use compound that marries old and new. ATT 19 is now in the space of what once was Arthorn Suksa, a retired old Chinese school that used to serve the children of the community. The structure of the compound was constructed close to the turn of the 20th century, making it more than a hundred years old. After the school stopped operations, the space was restored in a way that honored the old teak wood materials. Using only reclaimed wood, tiles, and bricks, it was redesigned to become a modern yet classic locale. ATT 19 fuses together art, design, lifestyle, food, and fashion harmoniously. And all of it is the doing of one family.

Assumption Cathedral is well maintained, giving off an aura of being relatively new. It is in fact centuries old.

The Catholic Church’s presence in Thailand is impressively long, predating Bangkok’s establishment as the capital of the country. The first historical record of Christianity entering the region of Siam was in 1550, when a French missionary decided to preach the Gospel here. It was not until mid 17th century when the Siam mission picked up steam, as more and more missionaries arrived in Ayutthaya. What followed were alternating periods of tolerance and persecution of the missionaries. But through perseverance, the Catholics stayed, even after the fall of Ayutthaya and their work culminated in the Assumption Cathedral being the principal Roman Catholic church of Thailand in present day.
