How do we ensure that gender equality and social inclusion are embedded in the GGA?

To initiate discussion and identify entry points for ensuring gender and social inclusion is integrated in the Global Goal on Adaptation, UNEP, UN Women and APAN organised the webinar, “Dialogue on Actionable Steps for Inclusive Resilience Monitoring and reporting.”

Organisers dedicated two separate sessions for Asia and the Pacific, designed to capture the insights of stakeholders in ensuring mainstreaming of gender and social inclusion considerations in development of the GGA indicators. The sessions also aim to gather and understand capacity building support initiatives in integrating gender equality and social inclusion in the adaptation policy cycle, informing the design of longer-term capacity building activities.

“We cannot afford the existing parallelism and silos between climate change adaptation and disaster risk reduction anymore. We must work together at the national level, at the global level, and very much at the local level, because at the local level, local people don't make these distinctions. For them, it is one continuum they know -- a continuous cycle of disaster preparedness followed by disaster response.”

Dr. Saleemul Huq
1952-2023

The APAN Secretariat joins the adaptation community in mourning
the loss of a great climate champion.

Dr. Saleemul Huq had been a powerful figure in the adaptation community. He was a pillar, recognised for his knowledge and insights on climate change, particularly on adaptation, loss, and damage. Prof. Saleem, as he was fondly called, shared significant inputs in the people-centric adaptation and loss and damage narratives as well as to the overall global climate adaptation discussions. His eloquent insights in connecting the ground to the global adaptation stocktaking have been a rich source of guidance and inspiration for actors in planning and implementing adaptation initiatives.

He dedicated his life to better the adaptation community, foremost, as part of the APAN family since the Network’s establishment in 2009.

In honouring him, we will continue to echo his call to action and put into our fold his message of collaboration, in order to make a significant difference in climate change adaptation.

Thank you, Prof. Saleemul Huq!

Adaptation knowledge sharing continues at the Forum!

Taking place at the Songdo Convensia, Incheon City, Republic of Korea, the 8th Asia-Pacific Climate Change Adaptation Forum continues to host discussions on the trends, gaps and future of adaptation action in the region.

For the second day of the main forum, two plenary sessions were held. Kick-starting the day is the APAN Plenary II – Deepening Understanding of the Interconnectedness of Resilience Enablers, which discussed the connections and overlaps of resilience enablers such as policy and governance, planning and programming, science and assessment, technology and practices and finance and investment. The session built the momentum to build an understanding of these enablers, their potential synergies and trade-offs to navigate pathways towards inclusive and equitable adaptation and resilience for all.

It was followed by the nine (9) parallel stream sessions. In the morning, FAO and WWF hosted the session, Innovating for a Sustainable Future: Youth and community-led actions for resilient food systems under the Food System – Technology and Practice Stream. The session, Innovation and Definition – Financing for the Resilience of Ecosystem and Ecosystem Services was hosted by the Global Green Growth Institute (GGGI) under the Resilience of Ecosystem and Ecosystem Services Finance and Investment Stream. IGES, DiDRRN, UN Women and UNEP – Empower Programme hosted the session under the Resilience of Communities – Policy and Governance Stream, Unwrapping Inclusive Climate Action: Intersectional perspectives on mainstreaming gender, disability, indigenous and local knowledge systems. The Global Center on Adaptation hosted the session, Urban Climate Resilience and Nature Based Solutions (NbS): Global Experiences and Actions and local knowledge systems under the Cities, Infrastructure and Settlements – Programme and Planning Stream.

In the afternoon session, FAO and the UN Food Systems under the Food Systems – Policy and Governance Stream, hosted the session, Food Systems Governance: New approaches tackling resilience from a system perspective. The session, Strengthening regional cooperation to address cascading climate risks in the Hindu Kush Himalaya, hosted by the Adaptation Without Borders Global Partnership (AWB) and International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development under the Resilience of Ecosystem and Ecosystem Services – Planning and Programming Stream. The Action Group on Carbon Footprint and Consultative Group to Assist the Poor, hosted the Inclusive Financial Systems: A Critical Enabler for autonomous and Transformational Adaptation in vulnerable countries under the Resilience of Communities – Finance and Investment Stream. Under the Stream Resilience of Cities, Infrastructure and Settlements – Science and Assessment, the Korea Adaptation Center for Climate Change hosted the session, Supportive tools and its application for climate change adaptation planning. The Asian Development Bank hosted the session, Unpacking the decision-making context in which tools and approaches are adopted to inform transformative adaptation investments under the Resilience of Cities, Infrastructure and Settlements – Science and Assessment.

The day ended with the Plenary III. Maximising the Benefits of Climate and Biodiversity Nexus, which discussed and promoted the efforts to address the climate and biodiversity nexus, showcasing novel knowledge, practices and experiences towards integrated policies and strategic investments, coordinated programs and inclusive partnerships and harmonised actions and scalable innovations.

It's a wrap for Forum Day 1!

In addition to the official kick-off, opening ceremony of the 8th Asia-Pacific Climate Change Adaptation Forum, partner organisations also hosted parallel stream sessions highlighting information, knowledge and practices across the four forum resilience streams of communities, cities, infrastructure and settlements, ecosystems and ecosystem services and food systems. These stream sessions used the resilience enablers of policy and governance, planning and programming, science and assessment, technology and practices and finance and investment to highlight updates on adaptation approaches and define gaps in these areas of resilience-building.

For Day 1, 30 August, three parallel stream sessions took place. These include the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and UNDP in Asia and the Pacific-hosted session on Scaling-Up Climate Ambition under Food System – Planning and Programming Resilience Stream, the Forest Education Across the Tropical World hosted by the Alliance for Responsible Forest Management (ARFM) under the Ecosystem and Ecosystem Services – Technology and Practice Resilience Stream and Effective Governance System session organized by the Korea Adaptation Center for Climate Change under the Cities, Infrastructure and Settlements – Policy and Governance Resilience Stream.

The first plenary session, Exploring Complex Interconnectedness of Resilience Dimensions also took place, which highlighted insights into how complex connections of different resilience dimensions and navigate pathways that will champion sustainable development for all in the face of a changing climate.

Capping the day, the Ministry of the Environment – Korea hosted the Global Adaptation Dialogue, a high-level discussion exclusive on adaptation. This was attended by officials from the Republic of Korea, UAE COP 28 Presidency, Green Climate Fund, UNFCCC, the Australian Embassy to the Republic of Korea, and the Ministry of Environment and Forestry of Indonesia.
