In Thailand, releasing lanterns during Loy Krathong, especially in northern areas like Chiang Mai, is a popular way to add a bit of magic to the celebration. Known as Yi Peng, this custom involves releasing khom loi, or floating lanterns, into the night sky. Each lantern symbolizes letting go of past misfortunes and making wishes for good luck, love, and prosperity in the coming year.
