The City Pillar (Inthakin) Offering Ceremony 💐
June 3-9, 2024
The City Pillar of Chiang Mai, known as Sao Inthakin, is located within Wat Chedi Luang. According to legend, the God Indra sent two demons to deliver the pillar, which now lies buried beneath the Viharn Chaturamuk hall, adorned with multi-colored glass.
The pillar is believed to protect the city and ensure fertility. Visitors can see murals and a gilded standing Buddha inside the hall, although women are prohibited due to traditional beliefs about menstruation.
In 1800, King Kawila moved the pillar to its current site and planted three rubber trees to aid in its protective powers. An annual festival in May celebrates the City Pillar over 6 to 8 days.
