This is an extremely sad time for the Kingdom of Thailand. It is hard to put into words the deep love the Thai people feel for their late King. Our thoughts are with all our Thai friends.

The Tourism Authority of Thailand has issued the following advice:

Thailand is now in an official period of mourning following the passing of His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej.
In this regard, the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) would like all visitors to Thailand to continue with their travel plans as normal. Furthermore, kindly be advised of the following:
Many Thai people will be wearing black or white clothing as a sign of mourning. This is not required of visitors but if possible, they should wear sombre and respectful clothing when in public.
Visitors should refrain from conducting any inappropriate or disrespectful behaviour.
Tourist attractions will be open as usual with the exception of Wat Phra Kaeo (Temple of the Emerald Buddha) and the Grand Palace, as they will be the venue of the Royal Funeral Rites.
The Government has asked for the cooperation from the entertainment venues; such as, bars and nightclubs to consider the opening of their business operations during this time. The decision will be made by the individual owners.
Most of the traditional and cultural events will be taking place as usual, although the celebrations may be changed for appropriateness as a mark of respect, or the events may be dedicated to the memory of His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej.
All transport, banks, hospitals and other public services will be operating as usual.
The related authorities have stepped up safety and security measures for all Thais and visitors to facilitate their travelling around the country.
For any enquiries, please contact our TAT domestic offices or Tel.: 1672.
TAT would like to thank all visitors for their understanding and supporting Thailand during this period of time.

Wow, what rain in Pattaya. Some of the lower lying parts of town are under several feet of water at times. Lucky we're not so low down and the worst of the water flows down towards the beach

Did anybody see the recent BBC series about Bangkok Airport. Absolutely hilarious in places - some real characters in terms of airport staff. Not so sure about some of the tourists though lol
There are a few clips in the BBC website - others on Youtube I'll bet

When visiting Thailand, highly recommend the Chatuchak Saturday market - Bangkok Mo Chit. Absolutely authentic thai market not solely focused on tourists. You can buy everything from hand made (yes, I saw her making them) coats for lapdogs, artwork and antiques, every type of clothing, pets (including actual pigs) and anything else you can think of from what I could see. Food options range from thai to this fabulous paella

It has been close to a year since the troubles culminating in martial law being imposed back in May last year. As a tourist you really can't tell the difference. Everything now seems 100% normal. Enjoyed coming through the old Don Mueang airport yesterday .... Brings back so many wonderful memories of my first trips here all those years ago

Happy Chinese New Year everybody. Whilst it isn't a public holiday in Thailand, it is as good an excuse as any other to celebrate. Gong zi fat chai!!

The military have relaxed the curfew time from seven to five hours as of 28 May, 2014. The council is also considering whether to lift the curfew in major tourist destinations such as Phuket, Ko Samui and Pattaya next week (which will get us back to normal at least for holidaymakers). - See more at: http://www.tatnews.org/tourism-is-in-the-national-agenda-says-ncpo/ .zSBiOWcr.dpuf

Martial Law eh!. I was there the last time they had a full blown military coup and nothing at all changed.

Here's an excerpt from what the Tourism Authority of Thailand in London had to say:
As of today, the situation remains unchanged in the city except for the presence of soldiers on the streets, simply to maintain peace and ensure order is kept at the protest sites. The situation at the rally sites of both anti- and pro-government groups in Bangkok remains calm.

The implementation of martial law has had no effect on transport and tourism attractions across the country. All public transport and tourist attractions, including airports, tourist sites and shopping malls, are currently open and operating as normal.

There is currently no curfew in place in Bangkok or at any other tourist destination in Thailand. Local residents and international visitors can continue to travel within Bangkok and other destinations in the country as usual.
