We've posted a lot about the volcanoes we've admired along our journey while in Indonesia over the last 9 months. Now, there's one in the news as Mount Ruang on the northern side of Sulawesi Island has at least 5 large eruptions since Wednesday.

Our friend Andre, who has worked as an engineer with us for years and also worked hard on the rebuild of MY Oneironaut was on his way home and thankfully did get home safely despite multiple delays and flight cancellations due to the volcanic ash.

These volcanoes are beautiful, but they can also be dangerous. So far there have been no reports of casualties but our thoughts are with all those affected. Stay safe Indonesia 🇮🇩 🙏 ❤️

📍Arborek Island, Raja Ampat
Between manta dives we went ashore on Arborek Island for a coffee break ☕️
This small village Island welcomes visitors and you can buy small handicrafts and souvenirs here.

Close by the famous dive sites of Manta Sandy and Manta Ridge, we weren't the only visitors sheltering from the cloudy skies.

This tourism village is not too extensive in terms of size. The land covers around a 7-hectare area, it will not take much time to explore the whole village. There are around 40 families living in the village.

It made for a very pleasant coffee stop and beautiful cloudy skies!

We're sure you're all waiting to hear today's update to find out whether we did see the Red Bird of Paradise 🐦🤣🤣🤣

NO. We were up at 4am and exploring our way into the jungle in darkness but today was not the day.
Still, we ventured into the mangroves where few ever go, we refuelled at the village and the local guide's bird calling was impressive!

Watch in awe as these majestic mantas gracefully glide through this marine paradise.

❓️Did you know? Manta rays are among the most intelligent creatures in the ocean, with the largest brain of any fish. Despite their massive size, they're gentle giants, feeding on plankton and small fish. These incredible creatures can reach wingspans of up to 20 feet, making them a sight to behold!

We are back out on the ocean in Indonesia, continuing the 2-year exploration of Asia Pacific on board MY Oneironaut 🥰
Where are we now?
RAJA AMPAT [Not in these photos]

✳️ Small update:
We had a busy 2-month break from MY Oneironaut to move another vessel out of French Polynesia, and to look at new and exciting (possible future boat rebuild) projects in Australia. 🤫🤫🤫🫣🫣🫣

At the start of this month we flew back to the boat in Fak Fak, via the Twin Towers in KL, then Makassar for provisions, then Sorong for more provisions, and finally, we reached the boat and bid farewell to Fak Fak! Somehow we managed to carry 100kg of luggage and carried 10kg of coffee beans in carry-on 🤣🤣🤣

Now in Raja Ampat, but sharing here a few moments that brought us to where we are today.
You can follow our stories for daily updates 🤩🤩🤩 Always Living The Oneironaut Life

Yesterday we came across a gem of a place on Banda Neira...

Beautiful decor in old colonial style and as promised, here are the photos 🥰🥰🥰

The stunning volcano of Gunung Api can be found through an archway at the top of the stairs, and we enjoyed a tasty lunch on the terrace before crossing the street to walk around Fort Belgica. Seeped in history and a good chance to purchase souvenirs such as books, maps, nutmeg oil and candy 🤩🤩🤩

All in all, well worth a visit if you're in the area!

Today was a day of culture and history in Banda 🥰🥰🥰

Fort Belgica was originally a defensive fortress built by the Portuguese in the 16th century. A symbol of the world's past spice trade, Fort Belgica is officially registered as a cultural heritage site.

The existing Fort Belgica was constructed with a pentagonal structure, with 5 angles and 5 large towers at every corner. It's the only one of its kind in Banda area. It did change hands a couple of times between the Dutch and the Brits before being partially demolished in 1904.

Good news for visitors... it has since been restored! The final restoration was completed in 1991 by the order of General Benny Moerdani (the then Indonesian Minister of Defence and Security).

***EXTRAORDINARY DEAL***
On 31st July 1667 England 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿 officially swapped this island (Run Island, Banda Sea) for a Dutch-owned 🇳🇱 swamp-land, now known as modern day New York!

Why?
Cloves and nutmeg at that time were expensive and Run Island is full of it! The competition to find the "Spice Islands" was crucial to the Dutch, Brits, Spanish and Portuguese to take the lead in the spice trade.

The British took control of the island in 1616 but in 1667, with the Treaty of Breda, it was handed over to the Dutch. Meanwhile New Amsterdam became... New York.

Frank reckons this was a great deal... what do you think? 🤔 🤣🤣🤣😆😆😆

A beautiful way to spend an evening... floating in the middle of Banda Sea as the sun goes down 🥰🥰🥰
